dumping exhaust out sides before rear wheels?
« on: April 19, 2012, 02:01:44 PM »
Is there a kit to dump the dual exhaust out the sides just before the rear wheels for a 1979 chevrolet c20 reg cab long bed? what will I need to do to make it work if there is no kit? My dad says he'll help me with this truck if I run ideas by him and he likes them as he's buying the truck later on, he's ok with either factory location or before rear wheels as I prefer. Will the gas tank be an issue? should I do an H-pipe? I prefer turbo mufflers and do not like the glasspacks on it currently.

If you have the 20 gallon tank (s) I personally would dump behind the rear axle.  H-pipe will help equalize the sound but not necessary for a stock engine.  My $.02

I'm not sure how big teh tank is it's a single tank on the passenger side, the engine is cammed and has an edelbrock intake.

I took mine to the muffler shop and they said it was to much work to even try and make the pipes come out the side because of the gas tank specially you have dual tanks and the crossmember that's there. So I dumped them behind the axle and used a h pipe to even out the sound but it's more like a u pipe because it sort of bends a little to clear the drive shaft. But I'm happy with it.
Why build it if you can't drive it?

There is a kit sold on this site that is a h design and dumps right after the wheels on both a short and long bed.  Look in the store, click on the logo or the store button.

Took mine to the muffler shop and had the exhaust dumped in front of the rear wheels, used 3in pipe, h-pipe, and super 40s...sounded bad, but got older and got tired of the rumble of the flowmasters and went with 3in out the back into dynateck header mufflers mounted under rear bumper. 4in inlet, 5in outlet. Sounds amazing, but its wit a bbc, quite in the cab but really loud behind me.

A prior owner did hack job on the exhaust  and dumped right before the tires.  Its a 305 with true duels and glasspacks.  When I get to the point in rebuilding the truck I am going to stay with true duels andrun it out the back of the truck at the local muffler shop.

I ran the duel pipes from my headers past my transfer case. I put Flowmaster 40s on, then ran two pre bent 45s, then pipes under my fuel tanks, right in front of, and below the spring shackle out in front of my rear wheels. Angle cut the ends.

I literally just did this to my exhaust last week. My exhaust started out as headers, 3in-2 1/2" collectors, 2 1/4 pipe over my trans xmember, 2 1/4 glasspacks dumping under the seat with a 90* pointing out. Las week I bought a couple of pieces of 2 1/4 pipe from my work. I cut the muffler off straight on the ends, welded 2 18" 2 1/4 pipes the the ends of each, a 45*, and then a 24" pipe to that. Put my exhaust right at the edge of the wheel well and even with the outer sidewall of my tires. Chrome tips on the end. Ill get some pictures as soon as I ge ahold of a camera.

Sounds like you want to do the exhaust of your truck just how i have mine. Its not the best job but i had to fix the rusted through pipes. I have duel tanks both 20gal and no problems. Just got 2 pieces of straight pipe, two 90 degree turns, and turn downs and some exhaust clamps and had it done in no time. Also coated it with grill&BBQ paint so it will last a while. Like i said it may not be pretty or the right way but it works.

Heres a couple pics to give you an idea of how it looks.

That's very close to what I want, I prefer the exhaust to exit just ahead of the spring mounts, but the tank may be an issue, however it looks like there's enough room to do 90s just after the tank and exit before the spring mounts. If not I may just do it like you did cody. Thank you for the pics.

I just checked my truck, i dont have any room before the spring mount, the tank pretty much butts right up to it. I have two 20gal tanks so it may be possible to do what you want to do if you have a 16gal tank.

I wanted to do this to my 83 GMC SWB 2wd dual tank pickup.  I asked around to the muffler shops and they all said it was too much work, and they did not have the time, and also I probably would want to pay the cost.  I looked into doing it myself and found a very detailed how to online.  I will start looking for it now and see if I can post the link on here.  It was on a hot rod magazine website I think.  It might have been from a link I found on here once.  I'll let you know.  Also, it is very difficult to place it in front of the hangers and pretty much impossible unless you have 16 gallon tanks.  Mine is duals out the back now with an equalizer soon to come.
