Where to look for rust ?
« on: October 13, 2011, 08:47:27 PM »
So I never had a blazer, and next weekend I am going to go look at a 73 for my wife.  I have had plenty of 73 - 80 trucks.  So is there anywhere else I should be looking for rust besides the usual spots ?
Also what else should I be looking for when I look at this blazer ?  Any help is appreciated, and always looking for advice from someone who has had them before.

Worst part on my 73 was where the battery sat.. Ate up the wheel well, battery tray, radiator support and fender you can find the parts for that... And around the windhield and cowl.... Im having to make all the pieces to fix these areas...  You will probaly see rust in the Floors,Rockers and the rear quarters front and rear of back wheels and above the wheel arch....

I have read that a common place is where the top mounts to the body at least on the newer ones that is not a complete take off...77-91???

Thanks for the replies, sorry it is a 74, my mistake.  I am going to go look at next saturday.  (The owner is in Mexico for the week).  I put a link to his photo bucket album in case you want to see it.  I see some rust on a door and back fender, but wanted to know of the hidden spots also to look for.
He said he bought 2 of them all because he saw Eraser and fell in love with the blazer Arnold's daughter drove in it, now he only wants to put money into 1 of them.  So I hope it is not too bad, because I like the way it looks, and my wife has been asking about her blazer I said I would build for her.   ::)

That doesn't look too bad. Does he have a hard top for it? If not I think I know where there is one around here that I could haul up when I come home for christmas.

Yes, has a hard top too.  I am getting pretty excited, I might just be adding another to the chevy family, I know my wife is excited, she has been bugging me for about 6 months now.

That makes me want to cut the roof off my one!!

Mine has some rust on insides if the tailgate opening, either side of the tailgate, you can only see it when you drop the tailgate though.

Well for those of you who are wondering, I did not get the blazer.  It was nice but another one who thinks he is sitting on a gold mine.  There was not one panel on that truck that did not have rust, and the interior was not even complete.  He was sticking to his price, so I said good luck and left.

Missed this but other than the typical places on trucks, check the rear floor at the tailgate and evrrything under it (crosssill, gate spring, hinges, rear body mount) the gas filler panel, the front and rear floor pans the body support under and behind the rear seats.

Its been my experience that anything rubber or glass will be ok, anything metal on these trucks is usually rusty here in Mass.
