Slow off the line
« on: November 02, 2011, 02:59:46 PM »
OK i get the gear ratio now.
Beeing a unexperienced engine builder, the camshaft range that i choose is 2000-5800, i did put in a 2000 torque converter.
Would that make my truck slow of a stop?

I split this out since it wasn't related to the original post.
Engines building has many questions that need to be answered prior to ever purchasing the first part.
You don't chose a cam based on its sound, and number and then slap it in a motor (bear with me, I am simplifying)
You have to build a package around the intended purpose.  Having a high revving motor in a daily 4x4 isn't going to do you much good and you want to focus more on the low rpm big torque size.  Many have been lured in on aftermarkets big power advertisements.

All engine pieces from Cubic size, compression, cam selection, piston type, head type/flow all effect the end result.  BIG flow heads are going to be a killer on a small V8 with no compression and a torque cam.  With all this said....

What are the components of your motor?  what dictated the choice of a cam with the rpm range?  did it call for a stall, (2000 is only 200 over stock stall at 1800, generally speaking)

Thank you Capt. for taking the time to help me,

So the story on my engine is...
350 block with 4 bolt main, with a .060 bore, Eagle 383 kit (cranckshaft, 5.7 i beams, -7 flat top pistons, 3.75 stroke)
World torquer SR Heads (170cc intake ports, 67cc chambers, 2.02 int 1.6 ext),
Edelbrok intake manifold 1500-6500 range,
Thumpr Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cam (Adv/Dur: 279/297 RPM Range: 1800 to 5600 Intake/Exhaust Lift: .498/.483 )
the cam specs called for a 2000+ stall.
Edelbrock 600 Carb (i know it needs a bigger carb, this one is barrowed, couldnt afford buying one for now)

What do i have to look out for?

So this crank kit:

These head w 67cc chambers
http://www.worldcastings.com/products/s-r-torquer-iron-heads.html
and this cam:
http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=107&sb=2

Did you get the whole cam kit?  Lifters, springs, chain, etc?

What size tires, gear ratio, manaul or auto trans and which one?

being that it has a power range above 1800, it has to be in that power range to make power....  Are you complaining about stomping it from a dead idle?

Sorry for the delay Capt. i had to go out of town for a little while,

Yes that's the crank kit, the heads, the cam and yes i bought the whole cam kit.

My tire size is 33 on 16.5 rims, its a TH400, don't know the gear ratio its a 14bolt FF with the GovLoc so anywhere from 4.10-4.56.
Yes i was looking for some action stomping it from dead stop  :o

Any ideas?  ???

From what reviews I have read on the "Thumper" cams they sure sound nice but are a dog until you reach the 2000 or above rpm range.

So the 2000 stall doesnt take care of that?

From my understandings of torque multiplication, yes a stall helps that but the engine really doesn't wake up until 2000 rpm.  I had that same issue in a 350 Oldsmobile engine, it had a great sounding idle but off the line was terrible.  If I had a 30 mph roll than it was quite responsive when the trans kicked down and I sometimes broke the tire loose.

Ive driven about 160 miles on that engine, i don't know if I'm adjusting to the truck but it seems to feel better as I'm driving it, does this happen as I'm at the break in process??

Also my TH400 is shifting gears every half second.
