That don't sound like no Chevy motor!
« on: October 18, 2012, 01:15:36 AM »
While hauling this load of scrap.

I hear while I was waiting to get paid the familiar sound of a Cummins 4BT but all I could see was K20 on the scale!

A little bit of butchery in the detail dept. But it sounded good, and was mounted pretty decent. Said he was running an NV4500 for a transmission, NP 208, and 3:42 gears. Said he was getting a consistant 28 MPG with an old heavy slide in camper on it. Said it was in the 34 / 36 MPG empty.

You would be amazed at what those 4bt's can do though. I'd love to have one to put in my dad's 1940 International Pickup but they are mighty salty right now. You can find a low mileage 6bt for half the price of a 4bt!!!

I hear a lot of guys liking the 4BT. I'm not a diesel guy. How common are these 4BT's? What do they come in usually?

From what I've seen is most commonly in bread trucks and they are mated to either a 5 speed( not sure what kind) or a chevy 400turbo hydramatic. You can also find them in some skidloaders, some kubota equipment and probably alot of other things if you do a little more research. The 4bt is exactly the same as a 6bt but less 2 cylinders but you can get plenty of power out of them.
