The fuel cell in that link looks like mine lol.  I also put mine under the bed and it was really easy.  I used a summit fuel cell and that same filler.  I used a piece of angle iron for the front crossmember the main thing is to make sure it is level.  The only problem I have had is I can keep gas in it ;D  Here is a couple pix.

I had problems with my diff cover rubbing my fuel cell under the bed.  It's an aftermarket cover with raised fins, so probably why it rubbed.  I also couldn't reach the upper bolts on the diff cover without removing the cell.  I ended up moving mine inside the bed for now.  And mine is a fleetside, so it might be a bit different.

thats a nice clean install it looks factory did you run in to any problems? did you cut a hole in a plank in the bed for the filler neck or does a plank flip up?

The only problem I had was the brake line and it wasnt really a problem.  I just bent it to keep it from rubbing the fuel cell.  Right now I dont have a bed floor in the truck but the filler will sit in the middle of a plank and I am going to flush mount a billet fuel door in it.

Did you use the stock rear crossmember to mount to?  I also have the diff cover with the raised fins and I have about 4 and 1/2 inches of clearence. Heres a few more pix. You can also see my fuel filter in these pix.

The rear diff cover and the fuel cell both came from summit.  The fuel cell is a 16 gallon the only problem is I cant keep gas in it with my heavy right foot :o

Yeah it sucks to be unemployed but they are going to send me back to school, so after 12 years I am going to try and make something of myself.

If you had to venture to guess, would you be able to recall how much that setup set you back.

I'm trying to weigh between this setup and the 19 gallon aluminum tank that someone makes for the same area.

Fuel cell, fuel lines, all the fittings and the diff cover about $400 I dont remember how much the aluminum tank was but I think that is why I went the route I did.

Not bad at all.

I'm see it'd be about $450 for the 19 gallon aluminum tank. $50 for the GM sending unit.  And then whatever it would cost for the new lines.  Probably somewhere about $550 I'd guess vs. $400 this way.  I don't know, might be worth it to me for the extra 3 gallons.  I'm gonna have to think about it.

That blazer tank looks great!  Is that the spare tire carrier you used for the front crossmember?

Did you put a return line on your fuel cell?

69byrd, Your fuel cell is really in your truck backwards. Being gravity fed, it won't be a problem until your down to a quarter tank or so, but going up a hill or on a heavy launch (for very long), I think you will find problems. Does it have foam in it? Lorne

No my fuel cell doesnt have a return line and yes it is foam filled.  I have not had any problems with it yet but I dont drag race.  I started to put it in the other way but I dont race so I didnt think it would be a problem.  If it starts to give me trouble I will turn it around.

Here's a few photos of mine. Basically, the same idea as the Capt's. Blazer install, but with a Summit/Jeg's 19 gal. aluminum cell. I moved the rear crossmember back, moved the spare tire carrier foreward for the front hanger. I made my own straps. The filler door would need to be a little different for the stepside, but the rest would apply. If you plan to ever go play at a sanctioned race track, be sure to have a skid plate on the bottom & a ground strap if you use a plastic cell. Lorne

The spare carrier was used at the upper support for the tank to "pull" up to.  The rear crossmember was moved back to the rear of the frame and angle iron was used for the front location of the factory straps.

Thanks! It is a piece of an early S-10. I cut out the pocket in the side panel then notched it to match the ribs in the bedfloor. I cut the "skin" off of the lid so the inside of the lid has the ribs also. Lorne

Sure, I like to go a hour or Two away to a cruise now & then in hopes to see some different vehicles. I've gone to that camp ground (Running Bear, or something) a few times, isn't that in Slippery Rock or Prospect? Talk to you later, Lorne

awsome its bear run camp ground and its in prospectlol and it would be a lot of fun  my buddy has a 1981 silverado 6foot fleetside lifted 4inc with 35 in tires yellow brighter than a school bus roll bar spare tire mounted in the bed like a baja truck interior all done up 350 crate motor 4 speed fast loud and a lot of fun to ride in and he wants to do some crusin so maybe us 3 can and keep up the good work on your truck it looks awsome 8)

Digging this one up...

On the Blazer tank install, can you still bolt up the rear bumper with the crossmember moved that far back?  Looks like that might be an issue with that setup.
Title: Re: fuel cell
Post by: Captkaos on February 10, 2009, 03:37:23 pm
Yes the bumper will still bolt up.

How are you going to run your filler neck?  Out the side of the truck or cut and weld in a filler that goes up and through the bed?  I didn't come across any complete/assembled pics of that setup.

Assembled of my setup on captkaoscustoms.com?  Currently that truck is playing mockup for my 6.0L conversion.  I am going to route it differently that described, but I was going to route it that way.

I've got your How-To page saved as a favorite.  I just didn't see any mention of how you were going to route the filler.  Out the side of the bed or up through the bed floor?
Title: Re: fuel cell
Post by: Captkaos on February 11, 2009, 10:52:13 am
I didn't list it so it would be original.
The original concept was to route it outside the bed to a reloacted filler (OJOE did this on his Crew Cab setup)
