I got to thinking after I posted pics of the trailer brake job, & checking out BlueCollerRon's pics. How about a thread that everyone that can take their camera to work with them, do so for a day or two. Then post up the pics? Think it would be neat to see some in site on each others daily lives other than our trucks.
-
blazin that is a good idea but i dont have a job right now :(
-

i work at a salvage yard where i operate a front end loader. I'll take some pictures of the cars i move.

Another trailer, Replaced most of the frame replace all the cross members, and wood floor for about 18' of the trailer. Permanently attached the sliding rear suspension stationary to the frame. Have about 9.0 hrs of needle scaling, & grinding. About 25 hrs. in welding, 10.0 hrs. into the floor. Over 500 holes drilled, and then filled them all with 7/16" Torx head self tapping bolts.
Did all six wheels for brake job on this one too.
Frame section.

Looks nice Blazin, thats a lot of work! I cant wait to learn to weld. Yea the shop was pretty smokey then :D, not now. We put up a lot of sheet rock today, we should be nearly complete tomorrow. I took some good pics but I need to find my cord to upload my pictures ::)
oh the saw was just sitting on the sheet rock
-
I don't know about looking real nice, but it will haul wood chips OK. Trailer wasn't really worth the money put into it, but the guy said fix it, so we did.
I kinda figured, know one could be that hackerish to use a chain saw on sheet rock!!!

Cameras are forbidden at my place of work, falls under "industrial espeonage" :o

Nothing wrong with working on a farm, even for a second job. I worked at a hog farm for a few years and I really enjoyed it.

I am a bartender at a local restaurant/bar. We are a finer dining establishment and a venue, so it's a diverse mix of people we get depending on the show and we go from fancy to down and dirty within minutes.
Here is a picture of what we look like during dinner, minus the eaters.

I enjoy it, it helps keep the bills paid and it's a family business so they are real easy going when I drag my big butt in late after a 12 hour shift the night before...lol
It has funded much of my shop rebuild and when we take vacation trips.
-
It will never see a fork truck again. It will haul wood chips for a few years then become storage or scrap. I tell you what though, The old flooring, ( Apcon, what it is called ) Burns real nice in the wood stove!! Combination of Oak, Red Oak, Mahogany. At least thats what this one was a combo of. Have seen other hard woods in them before. The scraps from the Hemlock we put in make make great kindling too.

I do heating and air cond. pics would be pretty boring. replacing motors and circuit boards

I work on industrial deisel engines and generators, mostly in the electronics department:

Man Blazin that's a bunch of welds. What do you run- 7018? Lookin good!

Alrighty here goes... I am a mechanical engineer and I investigate auto accidents for the legal/insurance community. Some Criminal, but mostly Civil cases.
I look at scenes, smashed cars/trucks, commercial vehicles, etc all day long... brakes, tires, suspension, download black boxes, and so forth. Usually Trying to answer the proverbial question... "Wha' Happened?"
I can't post many pics b/c it would violate confidentiality, but you can probably use your imagination... Typically Fatal or SBI collisions.
Before that I was a diesel mechanic, and an auto suspension tech before that. Blazin, those trailer pics sure bring back memories. I did a LOT of brake jobs on tractors and trailers... Glad I don't do that anymore!

Some finished pics:

I'm a farmer that goes to college at night but i also work at the county highway dept. as summer help but for some reason i got to keep my job through the winter which I'm very thankful for. I was hired on last summer to mow the county roadside ditches but they soon let me run a pickup with a motorized broom to clean roads for the paving and chip seal(I call it "tar n gravel" which is a cheap way to patch roads), work as a mechanic on the trucks and equipment, bucket man to trim trees, paint trucks, plow snow in housings editions, and a bunch of other little stuff. i love my job and hope i can keep it for the mean time. here's some pics.

I like it, get paid to pretty much just listen to the radio. No real problems except when people try and pass me on the right and squeeze onto one lane bridges with me. Those don't end up to well for them. :P

Great job Blazin, I wish we could do work like that for people, we have a hard time making people cough up the $$$!

That looks awesome Blazin. I wore my plumber shirt today trying to fix a kitchen sink drain. About a gallon of Drano was poured over the last two days, ran a snake through it today, still no draining....Found the stupid little vent for the drain causing all the troubles. My septic tank probably looks like a witches cauldron with all the chemicals poured into it. Makes me really glad I work on electronics for a living.

Blazin,
Did you have to lift the motor up a little to do the pan on the 98 2500 4x4?
I have a 2000 crew cab 4x4 with a 350 Vortec and the pan is getting crusty.
Just wondering how big of a job I'm in for.
Thanks.

Mitchel said to lift the motor. I dropped the front differential down as far as it would go. It was tight but it clears.
The front of the starter solenoid broke when I undid the main wire.

Your getting pretty good at those. ;D

Talked to the skidder operator. He said he tried to wreck the last one I built!
-
Dang, what are they doing??? That looks about as tough as an anvil.
-
The trailer gets loaded with 100,000 120,000 lbs of wood chips. Most times the landings are soft or muddy. In order for the tractor get moving the skidder pushes him. If you look in the before pics you will see the bumper is all bent up. been pulled back out a dozen times, and had hackpro braces welded to them etc. The original bumpers are only tied into the box, and rear door opening of the trailers. they are stamped steel about an 1/8" thick! I fill in the gap between the suspension frame, and new bumper.
Some of these guys could break the horn off an anvil with a rubber mallet! ::)
-
Very nice work!

Boy I wished my company wouldn't have switched us to Blackberry's with no camera phone. I was at the John Deere plant and viewed one of their new 764 high speed dozer cruising by. Course you can see a video clip of it on their site.
http://www.deere.com/en_US/cfd/construction/deere_const/widescreen_home.html in case anyone is interested. Saw one in production final assembly but the one on the back road behind the plant sure was cool but camera's aren't allowed in the plant.
-
I would love some tuff rough bumpers like that in my truck. ;D
-
By the way that is Chassis Saver, with a caot of SEM acrylic enamel with activator in it. Brushed, and rolled on!
-
Finally got around to posting some pics from my "office". This year I took a new position testing the quality of the liquid asphalt binder we ship to our plants and other customers. Here's a pic of it beling delivered by rail:
(http://inlinethumb01.webshots.com/5568/2455643750048747207S500x500Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2455643750048747207JefKTf)
I used to spend a lot of time on the road traveling to hot-mix plants and doing quailty testing on the mix as it was produced. They still let me out of my new testing lab to do this once in a while. One such day this summer I was sent to Blazin's territory - a stretch of I-93 just south of Waterville Valley, NH about 2.5 hours from home (one way). I made a day trip to check on things on day 1, but the crew was there for 3 days and then off to Vermont. In this case we were laying a NovaChip surface treatment mix 1" thick over a milled surface. Here's a shot of the line of trucks waiting for us as after we shifted lanes at lunchtime:
(http://inlinethumb48.webshots.com/17199/2606836720048747207S500x500Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2606836720048747207URvwex)
Here's a shot of the NovaPaver laying out the new surface:

The beauty of this type of pavement is you can put traffic on it a quarter of the time as conventional pavement. When paving in neighborhoods we can have the road open almost as soon as the roller passes. Here's a shot of the finished product, ready for traffic:

You ever work with GMI /I93 Asphalt? GMI sold I 93 earlier this year to Pike. We do all of GMI's work on their trucks, and trailers, also some work on the paver's, graders, etc.

Maybe?? I'm not familiar with all of our work up north but I suppose it's possible. We also own and operate the old New Hampshire Bituminous company in Boscawen, NH. They do mostly cold-mix paving, chipseals, sand seals, and calcuim chloride treatment out of that facility.
The job in the photos was shipped from Pike in Hooksett, and whether is was our job with us buying the mix from Pike, or Pike's job with us contracted to do the laydown, I'm not sure. Both scenarios are common for us.
BTW, sending you a PM

Another little project I did a few weeks back. Pressure washed the heck out of it, reweld five of the welds that hold the tank to the subframe, needle scaled all the rust, sanded the old paint, Chassis Saver over the tightly adhered rust, self etch prime clean bare metal, brush, and roll on an acrylic enamel.

This was a side job I did while I was laid off this past month. Some others are of restoring tractors. I can't take a camera with me to my normal job and I can't ever remember to bring a camera with me when I'm out working on broken farm equipment or doing welding projects.
I did this 806 International 4 hours from home where my Girlfriend is in college. I stayed with her and worked in a guys shop. I did all of this with tools that were in my truck and trailer. It was a big job and my first time doing it. I had no help and only a service manual. Its all done and works great though. It needed a new T/A, clutch, rear main seals, two new hydraulic pumps, new bearings and seals, and I rebuilt the PTO.

Here's my work - it's a love/hate deal. I can't imagine not driving, it's been 31 years and 3+ million miles - I still love parts of it, but at times I'd like to retire.
-
I have loved Kenworth trucks since I was around 10. I loved the Bicentennial year of '76 when KW did the sleeper over cab style. Back then, shows like BJ and the Bear were popular. Smoky and the Bandit was popular. I had my life set by the time I was ten. I was going to buy a '76 KW, throw a '76 TransAm with an eagle on the hood, inside the trailer, and drive the truck around the country. I have no idea how I was to make money, but, that was the plan.
I still beleive these are the most beautiful trucks out there, ever.
-
Sgt, I've had nothing but Kenworths since I started driving in 1978. My first truck was a cabover like your pictures. I've used the T600 since they came out, can't beat them for turning radius, ride and fuel mileage. My wife went with me for 10 years, we had a great time. I just run local now, 300 mile radius.
-
KW's, Pete's, or Western Star's are the only ones as far as I am concerned.
-
When I retire in 8 years, I just may take to the road. I still love the thought of long distance driving (which I love) and gettin' paid for it.
This is what I will retire from....I enjoy my job. I am in one of six oldest Sheriff's Offices in the Nation, Henrico, formed idn 1634. Back then counties were called shires. 8 shires, of only 6 now exist, were formed in 1634 in Virginia by the Virginia Company of London. The Shire Reef (where the term Sheriff comes from, was responsible for maintaining peace and collecting taxes for the King). Above my desk you see an actual copy of the 1634 map of Henrico County. Named after Prince Henry, King James I 's son (Jamestown, James River) in fact, after Jamestown, Henricus, 1609, was the second oldest English settlement in the nation, that is, prior to the indian massacre of 1622. Now the only fame of Henrico County is due to it being the home of the Richmond International Raceway in NASCAR, the Action Track.
Anyway, I ensure we maintian National Accreditation in regards to policy and procedure and write/adapt policiy keeping up with court cases, changes in national accreditation, etc...It's the best position I have had in 18 yrs working there and I love it.

KW's, Pete's, or Western Star's are the only ones as far as I am concerned.
I guess it depends on your preference. For some reason my company is awfully fond of Mack. We have a few R-model 10-wheel dumps, a dozen or so new Granite tri-axle dumps, a handful of Granite tractors and a bunch of CH series tractors for hauling liquid asphalt and a few low-beds. We've got one Pete with a 540 hp Cummins (I think, it's got some monster power) that does the heavy low-bed hauling. Rear-set steer axle for turning radius and a tag-axle for the extra weight. The driver says hauling our heaviest road reclaimer will tip the scales somewhere around 128,000 lbs.
No matter what you drive, the old addage always hold true - chrome won't get you home!
-
Good work Sgt. My youngest son is a deputy sheriff here in Clark County, he's been there for 10 years and loves his job. Just like the armed services we need to take time to thank all law enforcement officials for their service. I know the liberal courts make your jobs tough, but hang in there.
-
Thanks.
I know the liberal courts make your jobs tough, but hang in there.
You said a mouthful there!! Of course, there are bad apples in every line of work as well. All it takes is one bad report (or God forbid, a bystander with a camera taping an arrest) and that one incident ruins it for everyone else, both in the public eye and in legal changes---changes that make things like kindergarten for the criminals--they really have it made.
-
don't even mention harassment or if someone wants to pull out the race card
-
Sgt, when was that pic taken with the two KW's? It would make you very sad to know that the original BJ and the Bear KW is sitting in a junk yard somewhere I believe in the midwest. I read this information last year and saw a pic. The truck is still completely intact though and has a wood plaque inside of it stating that it was the truck used in the filming of the series.
That all said, I remember the show (I was around 5 when it was on) but I have no idea what the plot was??? Yes, the late '70's was the romantic era of being the big-rig trucker eh?

The owner of the trailer hired a no mind to cut the doors and do the interior work!. He just hacked a hole to small in the tops of the doors!
This is what he left for good on the bottom!
We cut the rotted out bottoms off the doors, and dropped them down a set of holes on the hinges:
He also managed to screw the front wall up. Used very thin plywood witch the chips would have blown through in several loads. Made the vent door full width across. He also didn't run the plywood all the way into the corners. We tore that out. Welded fillers in at the bottom of the vent screens, so chips can't fill the wall. Installed backers for the plywood seams to land on. Made a vent door that only covers the vent holes.

I know this is an old post, but thought I would link my company's website. I designed the tooling to make pretty much every forging you see and I'm also heavily involved in the machining of tool/die components (high speed machining and that sort of thing): www.millenniumforge.com (http://www.millenniumforge.com) No we don't forge crankshafts or any other parts for our trucks, but I did work at a forge shop that forged chevy v6 and v8 cranks for a short time. Most of our parts are for Caterpillar or for tractor trailers.

Well figured I would put a few pics up of a little project I did this week at work.
Old moving trailer. The guy uses it to transport bikes around the country for people. Hauls them to Daytona, Sturgis, Myrtle Beach. etc.
The batteries, and power pack for the lift gate were in a box under the trailer just in front of the tail gate. It was rotted just about off the trailer. I moved it up under the side door, fabricated a ladder to climb in easier. Extended the hydraulic lines, set it up so the controls are plug in, and can be 20' from the trailer while running the gate.

One of our customers is the north east rep sales for Brigs and Straton. He brought us a couple engines that had been dropped in shipping. Going to use them to build a couple monster wood splitters. Had to weld up the cases.

One of our custmoers traded his Sterling in for a real truck. We are swapping the body, and loader over to the new truck. We are switching the loader to behind the cab on the new truck too.

Loader is sitting on the new truck now. We still have to do a bunch of repair work on the body, then it can get set on too. Lots of wiring, and hose hook up this week well!

We have Pete's and Sterlings never had any problems with the Sterlings and we have an 06 Pete with 350k kms that is got rust coming through on the cab corners all ready and are trucks are kept clean, hand washed every weekend and rinsed off of every couple days depending on how dirty/salty they are. Had many sterlings/fords in the last 20 years never had a rust problem and they usually get about a million kms before they are traded. Only issue with our sterling is a weak mercedes motor.
-
We have several customers that have sterlings and every one of them the dash is breaking apart. One of them the entire fuse panel is held up behind the cover with zip ties, and the fuse panel cover has sheet rock screws though it into whats left of the dash. We are constantly replacing Head light switches, directional switches, window switches, door latches, handles, hood hinges etc. The truck we are taking the loader off we had to space the front bumper out so we could shim the nose out as it rubbed through the power steering cooler. When it was only a few weeks old I had to elongate the holes in the filler between the door and the nose as the door was rubbing against it, and it was as far forward as it could go! As far as working on them they are not user friendly. You have to take the whole head liner down to swap an air horn. To reach in under the cab you have to remove the rocker panel covers. The bolts are always a bear, and end up breaking off in the spring clip. As far as parts go! For the pre emission trucks, theentire exhaust from the turbo to the stack tip for a Pete or Kenworth runs around $1,000 give or take a couple hundred. For the Sterling just the pipes from the turbo to the flex that goes into the stack is around $1,700 or so. These guys all say. Oh I saved $10,000 buying the sterling, yeah well you make it up the first couple years of owning one when you have to buy parts for it. Head light switch is identical to a Ford Taurus. Car parts have no place in a heavy truck. The frames are lighter less crossmembers. The motor is about a quarter of the way into the cab, less foot room, and a huge pain to work on in under the dash, from inside the cab!
They stopped making them what does that tell you?
The truck he is trading in had a 550 Cat. The Pete has a Pacar. The other 2 Sterlings in the pics have Detroit's.
-
We have never had any major problems with Sterling's, but i wouldn't recommend a Mercedes to anyone. Got nothing to complain about a cat or cummins
-
Well thats why they are called opinions. As far as I am concerened its like comparing a F350 4x4 with a big block, to a C 10 with a inline 6.
The C 10 is the better truck! ;D
-
Well, I cant disagree when you put it like that!

Lets get some updates from newer members!
