I got it from a local wrecker his guys were about to torch the mounts to cut it out and cut the harness when i was there.  I told him i was doing a swap and talked him into throwing in everthing under the hood except the radiator.  I am even getting the whole exhaust.  hopefully i can use almost everything.  I am trying to use everything GM and all parts I have laying around instead of buying something.  I am hoping that my 87 corvette aluminum radiator will be up to the job of this little motor.  All of the fittings look the same.  Next up is to buy some adapter platesfor the engine and transmission and go get my car trailer and truck.

Just talked to the guy at the wreckers.  He is going to pull it on Monday and have it to me on Tuesday.  Should I rebuild this or should it be good to go with around 80G on it.  More pics to come on Tuesday!!!! :o

At the very least reseal and regasket it. It would suck to put it in and have a leaker.

Nice looking truck you got there. Is it gonna be a hot rod or a cruiser?

Ive had this truck since high school so I was planning on making it a driver but mostly for the weekends.  But if the mileage is good i might drive it daily.

Vile - Anything else i can do to it while i am cleaning the motor up.  I am thinking that new gaskets would be good any other suggestions?

A mild cam and some springs would be nice upgrades since you have the motor out already, maybe even a shift kit for the trans.

I would do a cam swap on it while you have it down..

What cam would be good for this setup.  It will be mainly be a weekend cruiser but I will tow my boat occasionally with it.  Also I am in Cali so i have to figure out a way around the smog.  I would need to match the springs to the cam right?  Are beehive springs good for this platform like the gen-1 blocks?  Thanks for the ideas guys should be getting the motor tomorrow.  I am stoked! ;D

I don't know what to go with as far as a cam for towing/smog, but I can tell you that you definately need springs to match the cam.  Beehives are the common spring on the Gen3 platform.

I am in good ol San Diego.  Where were you at in Iraq?  I was in JBB Balad.

I was based out of TQ both times. The second tour, my platoon traveled all over. We were "TAD" to Al Asad, Rawah, and two different FARPs (San Francisco and Milwalkee) in support of Op Dan. Both of those were in the Ninawa Provence about 20 mi southwest of Hatra. Hatra is a historic area, so it was cool to see.

So I just unloaded the goods into my garage and let me tell you if you have a level driveway you are lucky...lol.  Looks to be pretty clean and i got everything from the PCM bracket to the fuse block.  I didnt know that the 01 tahoe had a 0411 PCM and DBW TB but i am not going to complain.  I got a bunch of what looks to be frame coolers on everything must be since this had a tow package.  Works good for me as my truck will be a tow pig as well.

Also there is oil coming out of the throttle body??  How would it get up there isnt the lifter valley blocked off?

EDIT- I forgot to mention this vehicle was  a rollover so maybe the oil is from the crankcase venting into the throttlebody?

well the only thing that i dont see is the MAF sensor right now i will know in a few weeks what i have and dont have when i go to put it in.  The guy i got it from said to come back to get any little stuff i find that i dont have.  Pretty good deal for me.  This tahoe must have had a new motor put in or there are less than the 80k he told there was on it.

so i apparently have the DBW throttle body but i didnt get the pedal or the TAC module.  How hard will this be to get working without the originals?  Can i just get those modules together and it will still work?

It can be done without them, it will just be easier with them.

Or you can use a cable operated throttle body

A tr220 cam with matching springs and a i6 trailblazer torque converter would be a nice combo. I was gona run my 03 yukon like that but i decided to jump up to the tr224 cam.looks to be a fun project hopefully ill do a 5.3 swap in my 86 someday

Ok well i Got the missing MAF sensor and the Tac module and pedal assembly today.  Will it hurt that the harness from the pedal to the tac module was cut?  I can just extend the wires right?  It doesnt have serial lines or anything that need to be a specific length?

I am going out now to finish pulling the harness off and strip down the drivers side of the motor.  Hopefully tonight i can tear into the harness and figure out what needs to stay and go.
Title: Re: ***79 stepside 5.3l/4L60-E Swap***

well thats good to hear.  I am done pulling the harness except the two connectors on the left side of the transmission wont come out.  I tried everything to get them off but i am afraid of breaking them is there some trick to this?  Its the two that go to the little black box thing next to the gear select lever.  It looks like it might be some neutral sensor or something.

They can be a pain! That's the trans range switch. Soak them repeatedly with penetrating oil. I can't tell you how many I've had to finally just break to get them to seperate. Patience is all I can say or you'll be replacing the switch.

wow guess i will keep tinkering with it then.

Started looking into the harness and i cant decide whether i want to go standalone or try and use the fuseblock to power the whole truck.  would be a good upgrade from the glass fuses and all ofthe relays are on the fuse block.....i will have to do some more reading.

Well i got the harness all stripped down and I think laying the way i want it.  Not sure about some connectors though.  Anyone know of a connector glossary with pictures of the connectors and wire colors?  I found one a while back but i cant remember where.  Any help would be great i have looked for hours and cant find anything.

Ok so i got to put more time in on my harness today and cleaned up most of the routing and didnt really get to delete much as i am going to be running smog.  (There is a lot of smog crap in this harness!!!)  I think i pretty much have everything routed how i want it so i can start making wires longer and shorter now.  Does anyone know what these two connectors go to?

Got a chance to get a little of clean up done today.  Used some dollar store oven cleaner on everything and now it looks good.  Pulled the intake to investigate some oil in the throttle body and cleaned that all up.  I like the intake gaskets on this motor o ring type gaskets and clips on to the intake manifold.  very nice.  Truck should be here at the end of next week so then i can start pulling the old motor and setting this one in there.

Had to go away to work for a while.  Got back and my truck was in the driveway!!  The wife had it delivered for me for my birthday while i was gone.  Took a few pictures and started tearing it down.  I took off the front end so nothing gets banged up during the swap.  Saw how dirty it was and had to start cleaning and painting.  Took some pix along the way.  I plan to pull the motor over the holiday and start cleaning up the engine bay then drop the new motor in.  Heres some pix:

Beastie_3:  I grew up in Livermore but left when i went in to the military.  Havent been back in about 10 years now but i want to get back up there soon.

Well got off work early so i put some time in on the truck.  Got the motor out and started cleaning all of the mouse terds from everywhere.  I am hoping to get all of the wiring cleaned up and hidden.  Anyone know what i can do with the A/C and heater wires to reroute or clean them up?

So i have a 87 blazer tank and sending unit for the fuel system for this thing but i ran into a snag.  I was looking at the fuel tank pressure sensor and i dont know if it will fit in the top of the sending unit.  Can this thing go in the top of the tank?  It looks like the sensor just needs a hole to work so i was thinking maybe a hole in the tank could work if i cant squeeze it into the top of the sending unit.

The GM dealership that I work for uses a small butane torch to warm up the plug portion of the range selector switch to remove the plug.  GM uses something similar to the glue from a hot glue gun.

The Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor is a device that tracks any positive or negative pressure changes in the Fuel Storage or Evaporative Control (EVAP) System. It constantly feeds this pressure information to the Power Train Control Module or PCM. The Fuel tank Pressure Sensor is located on the Fuel tank.

I would think you could mount it on top of the tank somewhere but I would make sure you get a pretty good seal on it.  If you were to not install this sensor it will throw a code.  There is a way to reprogram the PCM and have the EVAP system disabled.

I am guessing that no one has put the whole emissions setup in a vehicle yet?  I cant have the evap or any portion of the emissions tuned out or not installed as they will be doing a visual of every sensor and  a diagnostic to check as well.  I have a few i deas i am going to try with the sending unit and if that doesnt work then some sort of hole will have to he made in the tank for the sensor.

does your brother run CA emissions?  I was thinking i might be able to tune it out so it wont throw a code and i doubt they will crawl under the bed to check my tank.....seems like a lot of headache for something that seems like a redundant sensor.

Made a little progress today.  Got the blazer tank mounted.  Sat and looked at the battery trying to figure out a way to mount it in the void that the tank once occupied.  Mocked up a battery mount using the tank strap and mount.  Still needs some work but i think it will work well and best of all it was free.

Still trying to get all of the emissions wiring figured out and waiting on my motor mounts to get in.  Got the wiring all setup with my fuse block and relays for everything all in a nice little bundle.  Hopefully i can get more done next week.  Here are some pix.

I wouldnt trust the battery mounted like that.
I would consider using one of these, or making one:

i found a battery box from summit and that is on the way now.  Got the motor in an started on the trans crossmember.  Fixed the broken bolt in the drviers side head.  Got one exhauast manifold on and stared at the passenger side thinking of how i wanted to takle that one.    Now i am  trying to decide which of the stock coolers i want to keep and from which vehicle.  The donor even had a PS cooler that i think will save me  money in hoses lol.  Plus i got HP tuners so that will be fun to mess around with after i get it fired  up.

NEXT UP is tackling the secondary air pump and the smog issues so i can get ready to go to BAR

What transmission crossmember are you using?

There is only 1 crossmember for the trucks, for different transmissions, you just move it.

using the stock crossmember just have to drill some new holes.  The keyless portion of my keyless chuck drill broke so i need a new one before i can get that finished.  I got my wiring hooked up and my fuse block and relay center installed.  Battery cables and radiator hooked up.  Also started messing around in HP tuners.

Be careful messing around.  You can really screw something up with it.

Mainly just reading and looking at all of the functions this program has not really anything to do yet as i havent fired the motor yet.

Any one know what manifolds fit the 73-87's I have been reading for hours and cant seem to find anything on 73-87s just 62-72s
F-body? vette? trailblazer?

LS manifolds?  I used the factory 6.0L manifolds.  If you get the later ones they should fit also (truck ones)

header from summit part#  SUM-G908   $153.93 they are shorty headers fit 99-04 truck requires slight mods to PASS side rail, u can either cut the rail, or what i am going to do is take the header have it cut right above the flange and add about 2 inches of pipe in so it will clear.

do these headers have egr provisions?  I am having a problem finding ones that fit but ALSO have egr.....might just need some made up but then they wont have a CARB EO# to pass smog

well u just have to kinda figure out what you need. I am gonna run stock exhaust so i am keeping 02 Sensors, i am going to get rid of EGR and all Evap stuff. don't know what else yet.but member here Aussie he is a huge help and has a ton of info he has his complete and running.

so i got my manifolds to fit.  I cut the egr port off the stock manifold and welded a patch panel onto it.  Then i took the egr mounting base and made a flange and welded a pipe to it and that mounts just above where the stock egr mount was.  Now i have clearance.  Found that the rear of the manifold still rubs but i will notch the frame and clearance the manifold and i should be fine.  Everything still fit under the stock heat sheild so it looks factory still but i have my clearance.  Now on to the gas pedal and e-fans.

So i got it to fire tonight turns out my PCM connector was not tightened down all the way.  I had been troubleshooting 3 different circuits for weeks and then i tightened the connector up and it fired right up.  Well now it is on to the last few things i need to tighten up or bolt on and then take it for a drive.  Started scanning with my HP tuners so i will be looking over the tune and seeing what i need to do from there.

Had a few hours yesterday to mess around with the truck.  My idle was off since i had no 02 sensors hooked up.  I started looking at how i was going to get the y pipe from the donor  truck on there.  My passenger side manifold was barely touching the frame so i would bu unable to put the pipe on it.  So i cut the flange off and rotated it so it would fit and rewelded it on.  Worked perfectly now it doesnt rub at all.

There is some sort of notch already there not sure if other trucks have this as well but it fits nicely.

lol in DMV's infinate wisdom they require me to fully register a vehicle...aka smog check...before i can get my smog exempt status from the historical plates.  This will only be a weekend cruiser anyhow so the historical plates will be perfect for me and i never have to smog again.  plus its only 2 dollars a year

een away for a while but now I am back putting tbis truck together to hopefully drive it at some point.  Anyways.  Swapping in an a/c box from an 88-94 truck and swiped the dash also.  I wantedthe newer look and the electric ac controls.  Gotta square away the spaghetti then I can get the box in and dash mounted.  The dash should be easy since it looks simple to mount.  More on that later.  Anyways I have a plethora of parts in various ups trucks and what not so the next few weeks should be fun.  Plans are to complete this truck and make it streetable for some spirited driving.

Found out the hard way that if you want to run 5/16" brake lines as a transmission cooler line you need to run an adaptor to seal it up.  I put the brake line in and started the truck and atf just poored out on the floor. So lesson learned i need a dorman 800-755 adaptor on each line and then i can have hard cooler lines::)

So I took the truck out and it would not shift at all.  It would just bang the rev limiter.  So fearing the worst that all I had was a one gear transmission I took time off work and made an appointment to get it rebuilt...mm.AGAIN!   As I was driving over there it kept bugging me I had no speedo.  Then it clicked.  Must be the vss since im banging the rev limiter.

Replaced the vss just to be safe and ohmed the wires at the pcm and they both read short to ground......wierd.

Then I found this sandwhiched between the trans mount and crossmember......doh!

It was only $88 I think plus shipping which put it right over $100.

At least my double steering box brace kept my frame from collapsing even more.  Proud of my brace!!!!

Not exactly sure.  I was entering the street from a parking lot and  gave it some gas and it kept accelerating.  It fishtailed and I over corrected and the posi caught and launched me into a parked truck.  Haveny had the heart to see why how the electric throttle decided the truck should commit suicide yet.

Got the wifes car rebuilt and out of the garage.  Pulled the new frame in and started cutting the lwb down to be a swb frame.  Need to get some rectangle tubing to start bracing.
