I have an '83 k10 with a th350 tranny. I just rebuilt the tranny with my dad (who has not done one in 25 years) my question is does the tranny fluid flow from the tranny to t-case or are they independent systems? If they are independent how do you know when the T-case id full? I had some leak out when it was sitting on the floor, and I want to make sure I have the correct amount in it before I start driving the truck.
Thanks in advance for the help!

The transmission and transfer case do not share the same fluid.
What model of transfer case do you have? It should have a fill plug on it to check the level and add more if you need to.

I am not positive but I think it is a 208. The tag on it says model 208, but I am not sure. There is an 1 3/16 (or so) fill plug on it. Do I just fill it till it runs out the fill plug?

I'm pretty sure the 208 uses just regular ATF fluid.
Crawl under the truck behind the t-case theres 2 plugs, one on the top and one on the bottom,,,unscrew the top one and fluid should be at that level if not dripping a bit from there.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, that is what I thought, but I just wanted to be sure

boy am I glad I asked! It took almost a gallon to fill it!

I know a guy thats rebuild transmissions, and transfer cases. He told me to run 5W30 or 10W30 motor oil in a 208 once. Thats what I have run ever since in all my 208s.
-
wow I have never heard that... I know that the fluid that was in it was red so I assume tranny fluid

I have a 208 in my truck. Factory recommends ATF. I've also heard that motor oil works....but I run ATF and haven't had any problems whatsoever.
-
mine has a 208 would it be better for my transfer case to run engine oil? im about to service it and the transmission?

If you live in a predominately cold region use ATF.
Predominately hot use 10W40 engine oil.
