Guy I know owns a prefab house place in the town I live in. He builds sides on palettes and fills them with all the scraps. I got ten of them tonight for use in the arch making maple syrup. I towed the trailer over to my buddies house that has the sap house. I got almost to the top of his driveway and something in the rear end went bang!!! Right rear axle is walking out of the housing. Parked it, he gave me a ride home. Will have to go pull the cover tomorrow night!!!

Stinks, but could have been worse. You could have been on the road instead...
-
Oh I know that!!
Just a not real loud bang, no crunchy crunchy, or grinding afterward or anything! I backed the trailer down his driveway. unhooked, and drove it back to the top in front x4 .
I am hoping it just sheared the axle off. I have replaced both axles in the past because the splines were twisted to the point that they were offset from the part of them that wasn't in the spider gears. It has a gov lock, and its has always worked very well.
-
Just finished up my rear end tonight from one of those bangs.

Thankfully you were not doing 60 + when it happened, now that would have sucked.

Was this in yellow snow?
I have a spare 14 bolt SF with 4.10'S.
If you need it its yours.
-
Yes in Yellow Snow. It has 3:42s.
I Have another rear in a C20 thats 3:42 ratio, but I don't really want to disable that truck.
I pulled the cover tonight. Its just the right side axle snapped off outside the spider gear.
I picked up a pair of axles, 14 bolt SF, and a 10 bolt from a guy I grew up with tonight. 3:73 ratio. I'm just going to rob the axle for now. Think this summer I will swap in the front end, and swap over my knuckles as they have all new ball joints, and my axles as I bought them brand new last year from Randy's ring and Pinion. 40% stronger than stock. I have a 3:73 FF rear end I pulled out of one of my mid 70's rigs years ago. I will do all new brakes on it and put it in the rear.
I priced an axle today. $458 from GM, and $315 from Randy's Ring and Pinion.

Yes in Yellow Snow.
Ok you 2, I know the joke when you are a kid about not eating yellow snow, but this has to be something different. Is this a east coast thing ? Enlighten me please.

You can see the famous yellow snow plow rig behind the magnum.

Sorry I knew that, just forgot you nicknamed your truck yellow snow. ??? I guess my mind was off in a different area wondering what in the heck actual yellow snow could mean. ;D

Was that the outer spline part of the axle ?
-
Good thing you have access to a few chevy parts Blazin'. ;D
-
Boy did you luck out on that... That chunk could have wiped out the ring and pinion if given the chance, not to mention if the axle walked out...
-
I didn't have any of these. I ended up buying a whole rear end to get it. I used both axles as my left side one was kinda beat at the wheel seal area.
Not sure what you mean by the outer spline? It snapped off just outside the spider gear.
The center pin would have had to come out for it to get inside with the gears. An axle useually doesn't break like this going down the road. It was the weight of the trailer, and letting the clutch out trying to get moving again. Have seen them break in heavy trucks like this. Dump truck in soft sand, or log trucks in mud. The driveway was muddy, and I didn't quit mqke it to the top. Went to start going again thats when it broke.

So YELWSNO is back to his old self again now?
-
The center pin would have had to come out for it to get inside with the gears. .
I just meant the third piece... if that was roaming around the differential
-
Only found a couple tiny chunks in the center section. The rest wass all in the tube. I haven't got the brakes back together yet. Was going to do that today, but I woke up with a bad migraine. been fending that off all day! Heck I just got dressed about an hour agao!

What is a SF going for in your parts? Took me about 8 months to sell one out here in NW Indiana...
-
I bought the front and rear match set for $100. 3:23 gears arent worth anything but scrap, but I got spare front axles, even though I shouldn't need them with the new ones I bought. I was out of them too, that why I bought those Yukon axles last year, I had run out of good spares. They came with 4 half worn studded snows. Good spares, or I might send them out to get recapped.

3:23 gears arent worth anything but scrap,
If you ever have any 3.21 or 3.42 FF 10.5" set destined for scrap I'd be more than happy to take them off your hands...
-
I have never in all my years playing with these trucks seen any FF with any other ratios than 3:73, 4:10, or 4:56s from the factory. I would swap a full floater in this truck in a heart beat if I found one with 3:42s.
