Title: 88 suburban square body tilt front end
Post by: wildcatjason on April 06, 2012, 03:10:21 pm
Alright I am starting my new adventure of building a tilt front end. I purchase a fiberglass hood and fenders from www.up22.com. This way was much cheaper to go then buying the full tilt kit from usbody and I can make sure it's all line up as a I go.
Here is the fenders and hood.
The hood is very nice. It is bolt on. The fenders are not as impressive and there is nothing bolt on about them. I'd actually be pissed if I recieved these and I planned to bolt these on the conventional way, but since this is going to be a full tilt front end I will glass them to the hood.
First I put my radiator core up to line up the hood.
Next I spent quite a bit of time trying to get the gap right on the back of the hood. It was really uneven.
I bolted to the hood hinge so it I could line it up with radiator core and took a cut off wheel to even up the gap at the back.
After it was evened up.
After I got the hood is were I liked I cut the radiator core of the headlight mounts.
This is going to be fixed into place.
I've spent some time lining the rest of it up.
This is where I'm going to put the hinge. It is right behind the bumper.
This one is to show you why I am not impressed with the fenders.
That's what I got done today. I should of gotten further, but I had a rough night.
More to come.

That is a daring undertaking to say the least.  Why did you decide to go with a tilt front end ?

Lol... I want easy access to the engine.

Agreed! Very daring. I swore I would never use Unlimited Products ever again. The fitment is atrocious and I had a hood that literally was a 1/2 shorter on one side. How do you fix those body gaps? lol Anyway, for what you are trying to accomplish you should be able to pull it off since you can essentially make your own body lines. Good luck with your build.

The body lines are pitiful. The only gap I will have is the cab to the hood and I took a cut off wheel to even that out.

What are your plans on stabilization of the fenders where they meet the doors/cowl area, so they don't vibrate going down the road ?

Well my friend I thought I would glass the end caps and put a dowel pin in one end to keep it aligned while a linear actuator squished it together. I don't think I'll get to work on it again until Monday though. I'd like to get the engine back in, but I'll hold my breathe.

AH, I was wondering if you were going to cut the front something like that or make the whole fenders pick up.

I like the look of the cut. It makes people know something has been done.

The reason the UP22 stuff is cheap as you have found is they are cheap.  They are made for a drag car not a show car.  I am impressed, I would never attempt this with UP22 parts.  Like Vile, I have gotten bad ones along with several friends, they are great for lightweight drag cars.  I have a US Body Tilt.  I will have another one eventually.

I'm glad I found out their lack quality in this project. I would hated if I expected all this to bolt on, but I probably would have made that work too. You're going to have a nice truck by the way have you got any further on that 6.0?

Looks like it is plugging along. My next project I plan on doing something fully electronic just not sure what yet. I've been contemplating a supercharged 3.8 from a pontiac in a Chevy II nova with an s-10 700r4. Right now I just gotta focus on getting my cummins back in.

Are you going to use those latch clips that I always see on front ends ?  If so are you putting them on the outside or inside ?

I'm doing a linear actuator. No clips. They have enough force to keep it down.

I'm not to happy with the way the back top has lined up so I'm cheating. It's nothing a little fiberglass and foam won't fix.

I only have 4 inches of space between the inlet of my turbo and the oil filter. Instead of coughing up 200 bucks for an remote oil kit. I am building this out of fiberglass. I made it as wide as I can to keep it free flowing. I started with a 4 in drainage pipe and it like this.

Used my wife's hot glue gun. Started shaping this floral foam. She went and got it for me a local hobby shop.
