Picked it up for 1300 bucks, 1977 k5 with the sb400, with a converted np208/th400 combo and manual lockout hubs. Had a broken rear yoke, missing driveshaft, and a ton of missing parts but only had a few small spots of cancer on her.
Day I brought it home

Then scored some new parts of of cl for $100 bucks.

The price sounds pretty good, especially with all that came with Blazer.
-

Yea, Yea. I'll get some posted up asap. The forum was acting up when I tried posting more last week and have been on the road all week so weekends are the only time its easy to post new pics up.
Finally got the rear drive shaft installed and got a yoke that actually fit correctly( thanks to irish)

Then found a guy selling a harwood cowl hood, door panels, and dash cluster a few hours away so made the trip up to pick them up. also threw a tach and a new grant steering wheel on it at the same time

I would think driving around at speeds over 85mph taking pictures with the driver's door open would be a little dangerous.
-
The Blazer is looking much better.
Engineer, you're posting what I was thinking... ;)
-
yeah I took the factory cruise control module out of it and put a longer speedo cable on it and now it just sits at 85+ but will be running with my gps mounted for speed. And thanks, still deciding on what tires I want to run on it and if I'm going to stick with 33's or go to 35's for now, and find a heated garage to put the chassis saver on the under side of it and get the monstaliner done on the exterior and interior.
-
I would think driving around at speeds over 85mph taking pictures with the driver's door open would be a little dangerous.
look ma no hands
gets some good tires if you want to go mudding lol. might be able to help out with a garage but i have to see if we have time. right now adding a lean-to on it but the same time that might free it up
-
also, looking good
-
Haha, yeah just having a little fun. ;)
A '77 Blazer around here would be eaten up with rust by now. Nice find. :)
-
It's all good. The only rust spots I even found on it were after ripping the carpet out and hitting around with an old ice pick. Have a small hole in the back floor pan area and one on the passenger floor panel other than that haven't found any other rust problmes on it. That's one reason I jumped on the deal even knowing that it was missing a ton of parts, engine was all factory even the manifold and q-jet, and came with the np203 and th350 that I sold to make room for other parts.
Irish might hit you up on that deal, still undecided if I want to go black on the interior or a different color of monstaliner, and still need to get a kickdown assembly from a 80s k5 or truck to get put in it to have proper kick down function instead of doing it manually .
-
and the two areas of cancer I still need to get around fixing.
and a crappy video of the cherry bomb extremes, Ill try getting one of it running down the road next weekend when I get home again. and got the squeal taken care of was a loose p/s belt.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPhq9kLu0qI
-
Well the new job makes it hard to find time to work on the k5 now that I'm really only home for a day and a half a weekend and having to take care of anything that needs done, laundry etc.
-
no progress on the k5 lately still got to find the time to cut the pan out and find a place to weld in the new one and weld up a few small other holes. The monstaliner can't go on untill it starts warming up. but have been thinking about bringing one of my other chevy toys out and finishing it up, its alot closer to road worthy than the k5, all it needs is a front drive shaft, new column bearings, and the exhaust hooked up on it.
-
what transmission does it have?
-
5spd manual behind a 350 with the crappy tbi.
-
i have one for the 4l60e i think. and 4l80e but thats the one behind the 6.5 and think i found where the problem might be with the 6.5
-
I remember you had that problem with the 6.5, though you got it figured out awhile back though.
-
lmao no. but the old pmd box was melted at the b post, that runs to the fuel solenoid. so going to take the intake off when i can to look at that. the 6.5 can run/sense timing with the cps and optical sensor. if one is bad the truck will still run just takes awhile to start, but the only time she trys to start is if both sensors are plugged in. if you unplug one or the other she wont get no fuel
-
I love the very first pic. Same thing happened with my 35"s and a uhaul trailer. Funny times
-
Had the same problem even with the newer wider uhaul trailer with the k1500. dont mind the flat passenger tire.
-
guess i dont have a picture of the trailer we built. but its made just for our trucks, and big tires. we are just under the width limit of a trailer i wana say 8' there is only a couple inches on the inside width to accommodate 73-87 trucks. i have hauled cars but it gets sketchy with planks that slide around for the smaller wheel base. then we also made the fenders drop down like that trailer.
-
I'm still debating on which trailer I really want to get in the near future, Or finally just buy my own place with some land and a nice big garage with it, I'm used to hauling 102" trailers all day long (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g143/marine_racer74/20131220_091256_zpsd8qcn2wo.jpg)
-
well got a few new goodies to clean up the engine bay, got a fresh oil change in it, and re painted the stock rally wheels. just a need to find some new shoes for it to go to inspection. then it might be going down to texas for a little bit.
still need to find all new center caps for it to, the factory front ones are cracked to heck and the rear ones are mia.

-
about dang time you did something to her lol
-
yea, was out on the road for the whole month before. Ordered new wheels and tires for it yesterday, 33x12.50x15 swamper radials on some procomp 1069's, then still debating on what intake and spark setup I'm going to run on it.
-
Had to change the tires because 4wp didn't have them.. then ordered the rims and tires I have now from them and took them 2 weeks to tell me they were on back order for 4-8 weeks. so got them from tirepackage.com and got them to the house in 3 days mounted and balanced, lugs, and center caps.

-
shes coming together nice
-
Thanks, and yea just taking a lot more time than I wanted. Pretty much I get to wrench on it a few hours every 3 weeks when I finally get to the casa.
-
finally figured out why the high beams would come on when I applied the brakes, also got the new signal cam in and have signals now just no 4-ways. at first the high beams would flash with the left turn signal. but figured it was the relay for the classic industries hd headlight harness that was causing all the problems, pulled it out and now all is well. hoping I can get it inspected in the next few weeks before I go pick up my new car trailer.
-
got a few more small things done to it to pass inspection. all thats left is licence plate bracket, plate light and geting the retcater welded back in for the seat belts.

Getting closer and closer.
-
closer and closer till it gets loaded on a trailer and taken to texas.
-
got it a new home
(http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g143/marine_racer74/77%20K5/20140419_152341_zpsuf46rnc3.jpg)
-
So now you have it in Texas with you ? ;)
-
still in delaware. but will be moving back to texas in the next few weeks, plus trailer is long enough I can strap the factory wheels and tires down on the deck along with the k5
-
Got the new exhaust welded up today. 2.5 in pipes off the headers into the cherry bombs, and x pipe ( even though they ran it differently than normal)

and sorry for the crapp camera man on the cell phone video, but sounds alot better in person and got rid of the raspyness of the exhaust, cant wait to hear how it sounds with the cam.

whats up with the yoke on the trans?
-
whats up with the yoke on the trans?
It does look like it is pulled too far out, was your truck up on jack stands on the frame with the suspension drooped ?
-
looks like its been that way for a bit because of the rust. don't brake hard or that may come out.
-
or make any jumps
-
its been that way ever since i put it in there, it came out of a newer k5 than mine. its only temporary untill it gets to texas where it will be gettng a sm465 with an np205 t-case in place of the th400 and np208
-

That is good news, I have seen what happens when a drive shaft falls out when in motion. OUCH !
-
I am been in a 70 Camaro with a built 454 running at a high rate of speed and drop the driveshaft. At the time it happened we didn't know where the "flash" of light came from....
-

You mean the one that flashes your "life" in front of you.
-
Well it was the flash of the headlights pointed on the asphalt in front of the car as it pole vaulted into the air and then came back down on all 4 wheels...
-
now im torn between selling it to the org. owners brother whom I bought it from or keeping it and further modding it. Keep going back and forth between which is the right move to do.
-
how much you selling it for? if you dont mind how much you buy it for? then think about how much work you put into it. then think about what you could buy in texas
-
looked in Texas but didn't find anything that i liked. was a 77 k10 in md i was looking at but the guy said rust was a major issue on the cab, only good thing is it has the sm465 in it. I got it for 1300 then did all the work to it, bougt it apart no lights in it, broken column, rear yoke. etc.
Only reason it might be sold to the guy is the kid I bought it from passed away a few weeks ago in an accident due to a drunk driver and his brothers friend saw it on the trailer after I got the exhaust work done and told him, he contacted me and asked if I wanted to sell it to him. but for what I have in parts alone I dont think he will like that part. and plus I did all the work on it, fixing small things plus I have a soft spot for the round eye chevy trucks/k5 body style
-
how much you selling it for? if you dont mind how much you buy it for? then think about how much work you put into it. then think about what you could buy in texas
Also factor in the moment when you go "crap" I shouldn't have sold that truck cause now I miss it.
-
kind of touching story. i would almost add it all together and give him that price + your time. i have a soft heart for humans, kind of have the wrong job but i make them just think im crazy and they listen lol. but bake trucks are like women ;) i know if i was in the brothers shoes i would understand you not wanting to take a lost
-
I know i think that he wont want to pay what i have in it so far minus time and the small things like time, nuts, bolts, paint etc. I do feel for him though but then I also have a very soft spot for the 77 already from where I got it to what it is now and the plans i had and have for it. just dont know what to do plus i dont want to rip him off/ take a loss on what i have in to it so far
-
you sound like you have a conscious so that being said you could just charge him for the parts and truck(free labor). if you do decide to charge him for your labor you wont rip him off. just like that yoke you got buddy said to charge fair market value (it was his yoke) so i charged under what it was worth just so i could give him some cash then he turns around and gives me the cash. i was a little ticked cause i would of just given it to you if i knew that.
-
yeah, finally got back to de to actually see it and just dont have the drive to finish the small things on it, gonna send the guy a list of the parts that have been put on it and what all was replaced and see what he says. If its close ill just use the money to finish up the fuel cell on my 72 and get my k1500 back on the road.
-
well after a bunch of "BS" about him buying the blazer I decided its going to Texas with me to get finished up, already have a place to extend the rear drive shaft, going to replace the front wheel bearings once i get to Arkansas, and do a few more things to it, guess it will be a daily driver maybe once or twice a week and the main weekend wheeler when my buddies dodge or kaiser are actually running.
-
what happened tell me i like drama lol
-
well his brother wanted to buy it back, then had the money then didnt have the money, then his dad calls last night right before i was going to head out and told me what was going on, from his side and it sucks and i feel for them. but called this am and said he was gonna pass on it( which i already figured) why its strapped down on the trailer with all my stuff in it waiting to go to Arkansas, then to Texas. might as well finish it up then start working on the k1500.
just waiting to head out so the dog and i dont get stuck in washington traffic
-
Got stuck in Arkansas when the ford had a freak differential problem occur. Decided to get some work done on the k5 in the process. went to tighten the wheel bearings up and had a whole laundry list of problems on the driver side. 1) got the warn hub out and it was destroyed, flakes of aluminum all in the hub 2) lock nuts were put on wrong 3) hub was destroyed and had the races were spun on both sides 4) actuall spindle was rounded off about the half way point to the inside. 5) rotors and pads were completely glazed over 6) rotor was seized due to rust. So what turned into what should have been a $50 dollar ordeal turned into about a $500 dollar ordeal with everything on both sides getting replaced from the spindle on out. On the upside it fits in the garage in TX ( had to pull the light bar off) but nice to be able to have a solid surface to do the rest of the work on it.
-
I really like your story project build ..... The k-5 is definitely a nice truck you have. Don't even know you but I'm glad you kept it, it's worth hanging onto indefinitely I think, ,,,,,, you would probably have missed it, good thing it has a new home under a roof to protect it ,,,,, keep the updates going, I enjoy reading them
-
Thanks, got the hood pulled off it today and trimmed and sanded down to look alot better and allow the wipers to move freely, got the valve covers off to replace the valve stem seals in the morning along with new front shocks for it, ordered a diy4x shackle flip for the rear, pulled apart the gauge cluster and Now im hunting down a circuit board for a 77 like i have instead of the 87 model board thats on it now.

At least it is progress right.

Yea, can never complain on progress, however every time i get something done on it I discover another task that needs to be done on it
-
Yea, can never complain on progress, however every time i get something done on it I discover another task that needs to be done on it
It is either that or another task that comes up around the house or the "honey to-do list". :P
-
very true but the honey do list went out the window with my divorce a few years ago, so trucks get all the attention and money now.
another update for the day.
pulled off the front shocks and went from duals back to a single shock, sanded and painted the steering stabilizer and put a new boot on it, and put my k&n on it finally.. doing the valve seals tomorrow.

well started to do the valve stem seals today let it warm up a few minutes to check if the top end was getting oil. Got the valve covers off after about 15 minutes after pulling the plugs, ran my finger in the head and came out with this
(http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g143/marine_racer74/20140810_161247_zpsywhaergk.jpg)
push rods look like they havent seen oil in a while along with all the gunk build up in the heads, thinking its time to pull the heads just havent decided if i want to get the factory heads checked out and worked on or just grabbing some summit heads and bolting them on and calling it good
(http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g143/marine_racer74/20140810_172236_zpslvzo8ysn.jpg)
which was the fear i had of pulling the valve covers today so here goes a ton more money into it, on the upside it is a heck of a lot cheaper than getting my diesel finally fixed
(http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g143/marine_racer74/20140810_172226_zpszi20vtxl.jpg)
so just used the last bit of spare cash I had, full gasket set, 2703 intake manifold, summit loaded heads, summit high flow water pump, new push rods, new rockers, arp head and intake bolts,
-
Looks like a fun project you have going on.
Are you doing the valve seals because it smokes when you start it?
Does the motor run good the way it is? Did you do a compression test?
I'm just asking because I've heard of a few horror stories when people put a new top end on a worn out motor.

motor runs fine just have smoke on start up, checked other side and it was nice and clean. Really debating on doing valve stem seals now to help clear up the smoke and such or just shelling out the coin and getting some new heads. Heads were on the want list anyways but just have to decide if i want to spend the time doing every valve seal or just going the easy way with new heads...
-
I agree. The top is starving for oil. What is the oil pressure running?
-
last time i remember checking it was 2 start ups ago(before it got loaded on the trailer for texas) and it was idling at about 25 or so. pulling the intake off in the morning, then heads. was hoping it was gonna just be valve stem seals and call it good but nothing is ever easy on this thing.
-
The idle oil pressure is good, but something is holding oil back from the top end. Could be a restricted galley if it starves only on one side. Need to inspect the lifters, as well.
-
well got the intake and carb off, still need to pull the push rods out, and check the lifters, really debating going this far if i should just pull the cam out and throw a new one in it while im at it. but heres a few pics of how it sits now

was planing on pulling the oil pan for new a new gasket and figured i might as well throw a new h/o oil pump in it at the same time.
-
It looks like from the pics that there was some sludge build up in there.
-
in the head yes just a slight amount in a few spots of the head, but valley had no sludge but has also been sitting for 2 days. I was planning on pulling the pan also to replace the gasket and throw a high volume pump in it at the same time.
-
That intake gasket is pretty well cooked at the center on the passenger side. Check the manifold with a good straightedge.
How many miles are on that oil filter? :o
Do you see the problem you are facing? Where do you stop? At what point does it cease being a repair and become an O/H or replacement? Been there a few times. I don't envy your agony one bit. The thing to do is to make a complete evaluation before you dump any green into that engine. You know full well the more you take apart, the more you'll find. Is ye prepared? :-\
Here's a thought. Why don't you pick up a primer tool and pressurize the oiling system with the intake and valve covers off? Then you can bar the engine over while priming to observe oil delivery to the top end - determine whether there are any lube system issues that require major cleaning like rodding the rifle bores.... You see where this could end up. Perform a complete eval before committing to repair. Just my 2¢. Well... maybe 1½¢.
-
On this oil filter less than 2 miles total, on the one I replaced Heck if I know. Ill have to check with my buddy if he has the priming tool i can borrow off him in the morning. I know the p/o had it since 2011, not sure if the owner before him did any work to to motor so no telling how long any of it has been together or apart for that fact. At the time if the bores looked good and deck was straight i was just going to do a full top end on it with the oil pump and had it priced right about 1600, was hoping it could be done and be able to drive it and let my diesel sit until I can sell a kidney to get it fixed. Kinda making an ls swap seem more reasonable but hard to find one with all the stuff I need and everyone is way over priced. cheapest i found was a 00 with 162k for 400 bucks with accessories but no harness or anything like that
-
well made my oil pump primer using the old dizzy, put my Dewalt lithium drill on it and hoped for the best. and the results are

-
A new Melling oil pump and a little Seafoam should bring that right up to snuff. But, I would also replace ALL of the engine seals or it may start lubricating your driveway. Now, it's just a matter of checking the rest of the mechanicals before committing your retirement. 8)
-
got the heads off it today, still had cross hatching in the cylinder bores which is a plus. really debating on what top end kit i want to go with on it dont really need the higher rpm intakes all the kits come with and was kinda hoping to find one that had an oil fill provision as the valve covers i have dont have one built into them.

decided to sell the 400 small block and go with a different engine and trans combo.
-
What engine/trans combo are you going with ?
-
trans is going to be sm465 unless I can pick up a nv4500 on cl before someone else does. and for now going with a 5.3 with z06 cam from bdturnkey.
Decided that efi would be nice to have in it. plus it will be my dd while my other two trucks are getting engine work done on them and would feel a little better with the 5.3 in it if the gf takes it for a day.
-
well while i waited to be able to get my engine for the k5 picked up another project and got that all taken care of, but engine will be here next week, will be mated to an 08 4l70e transmission transfer case will be a np241c passenger side drop with vss (needed to shift the 4l60e series transmissions) Diy4x Motor mounts and competition poly mounts will be here tomorrow and fuel pump (walbro 255 external) will be here next week along with the new headers for the engine. Diy4x shackle flip with 14 bolt with 4.10s will be going in after engine and trans are installed. Got windstar fans mounted up to the radiator last week, did get some great parts off a 78 in the wrecking yard. But on with what everyone wants to see the pics
new tach mounting area.

He had to mess with the wiring a little bit and threw in the cruise control wiring for free. so just need to buy 3 switches and figure out where to mount them and have a clean install and easy to set or adjust the cruise.
-
where did you get the speed sensor for the 241?
-
came from either a 90-91 blazer or surburban only 2 years that have the np241c passenger drop with vss. Luckily it was pulled but had to dig through about 9 full truck beds of t-cases to find one. now to get rid of the th400 and np208
-
picked up the 4l70e today and was joking around with the guy ( has a huge shop lots of custom crawlers, mudders, rockwelled and sas trucks) that i needed a 14 bolt with 4.10s and ended up having one and was able to pick it up cheaper than what pick-n-pull wanted and was already pulled for me.

Got the intake for the 5.3 earlier today and a seal and gasket set for the np241.

well hopefully have a buyer for it and the th400 together. got the engine out of the bed of my truck and set in the k5, gonna have to pull it back out in the a.m. to cut down the cross member slightly to allow it line up a little better, hopefully will get the trans/tcase in also before i head back out on the road.

Finally got home for 3 days and got the motor mounts set correctly, trans installed, wired, plumbed, etc etc etc. way to much got done in the last few days. and finally got the walbro 255 installed this evening before i went and spent time with the fiance and kids. just need to run a few wires, fill the coolant, trans, and tcase. and hope for the best so i can get around to the shackle flip and putting the 14 bolt in it. just sucks i just had the exhaust done before the move and now its all going to get scraped for the new lt headers and 3 in exhaust.

its really easy to do. i paid for the easy route and got a turnkey engine wiring harness pedal and all that.
-
After getting all the cost for the rebuild on the 4l70e as much as it would have been convenient to have the auto od i just couldnt justify 3500 for it, 700 original price plus 2800 turnkey build out the door.
Found a 95 nv4500 2wd chevy trans for 400 bucks, already ordered the 4x4 main shaft, output shaft, 4x4 extension housing, and slave cylinder. will get the flywheel and clutch, and pedal assembly this week. just rather go with something i know will work after all the problems with the 470e. But few pics of the trans.

well finally got the nv4500 back from the rebuilders, have been gone during the week and only home for maybe 38 hrs on the weekends so hard to get work done on the k5, had five days off for thanksgiving and rained the whole time so couldnt work on it do to not having a garage again, but got the 4l70e out last weekend.
the np241 will be stored in the garage along with a gm 10 bolt front axle i scored for 80 bucks for the sas swap in my k1500.
also got the flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate mounted last weekend before i had to head out again.
bell housing mocked up to check clearances, may have to switch to a different pan later on for the slave cylinder but have to wait for it to get in before i tackle that hurdle.

This would be a cool blazer pic for the calendar...

Which photo?
and got more done to it today. got the trans tunnel pulled to trim it slightly more, picked up my np208 from my buddies house, installed, need to get a longer drive shaft or just wait to install the 14 bolt when the disc brakes finally get in for it.

another update for the day, after running around to 5 different junk yards found one that had a late 80s era wrecker with the sm465 and got the pedals from it for a whopping $20 bucks but had to pay 10 extra to use their tools as my dumb :( forgot my 1/2" and ratchet at the house but ended up with a set of hydraulic pedals instead of paying almost $400 on ebay for a set

Got temp plates on it today, got the exhaust done at a shop up the road, cleaned all the "stuff" that was stored in it, got the oem mirrors i bought awhile back installed.
Things that need to be done this week: pull the old e-brake cables and put blazer cables on it, find a relay for the headlight harness, pull the sunroof and silicone under it, find a overflow resivor cap, figure out the slight miss on heavy acceleration. get new shackles on.
oem mirrors.(http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g143/marine_racer74/20160307_152619_zpsruma6rcc.jpg)

I doubt this one has a distributer...
I would suggest plugging it in and checking codes. It could be a bad coil, something not plugged in good, an issue with the tune. Reading the codes should get you close though.

just curious but how many grounds do you have?

alt to batt, to ground, then looked and saw my rear cable from the head was off so need to get it back on and try it out. currently sits like this (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g143/marine_racer74/20160315_163842_zpsnltulqxm.jpg)

Got the plugs changed out the other day and got around to driving it today to the inlaws to do the parking brake, my miss is now gone with the new plugs, but need to check the cel light im getting now and my code reader took a dump on me.

should have had to pull it out! some mouse decided to make a home, cardboard, old clothes fibers, its bathroom stuff, etc. Needless to say i took a few showers afterwards and used to flexiable claw and alignment bar to get it all out, only thing i can't get out is his little skeleton
-
Oh isn't that just lovely.....*gag* haha

Are you implying that your truck maybe haunted by an ANGRY mouse? With all of that "stuff" in there, it's no wonder he perished! lol
Mouse coffin....
All you need now is a chrome mouse hood ornament. Happy Day!

All joking aside, your truck is coming along very nicely! That's a neat little compressor. Viair?
