Nice rainy Saturday morning and I'm heading out to an auction to look at another M1009 Military Blazer.
I'm guessing its more of a parts truck than a driver. Hopefully the rain will keep a big crowd from showing up.
Anyone else that can't resist the urge to buy trucks that they really don't need?
-
Present.
-
Yes, actually talking to a guy about a Crew Cab extended cab... It is a sickness...
-
I need a bigger trailer.
I ended up buying 2 Military CUCV's today at a fire department auction.
I got the M1009 Blazer that I knew was going to be there. Its missing the batteries, alternators, & radiator. The rocker panals & rear 1/4's have a little rust behind the rear tires, but its good for a New England rust belt truck. The doors are mint on it. Paid $800 for it.
I was surprised to find a M1008 (k30) there. I paid $650 for it. Good solid body with a little rust in 1 rocker. Its a clean cab & bed otherwise Its missing the batteries & the radiator. The writing on the windshield says "no brakes, no 4x4".
I took the pick up home with me. I connected the oil lines with heater hose & tranny lines together with fuel line. I put 2 batteries in it and it started on the first try.
Its very odd that the pick up cost more than the blazer.
-
Here they are
-
Score x2
I would love to have the Blazer. Get it running, reliable, and safe and donate it to our local fire department.
-
Where are you located?
A lot of the fire departments and a few of the police departments here in Mass still have the CUCV's. The departments get them from the Military then have the vocational high schools fix them up.

Ummm hello, LOL

Vile,
With your projects we get to see the progress as you work on them.
Although I enjoy working on my trucks, I also like the hunt. I always enjoy the auctions.
I probably should have spent the day working on my other trucks, but the thrill of the the auction is tough to resist.
Someday I'll put a motor in my blue step side, (its been sitting inside for 4 years with a blown motor).
I could have spent the day removing the 6" lift from my other M1009 and replacing it with a 2" lift. I bought that blazer last fall thinking I would lower it down and use it as a daily driver. The blazer got parked next to the step side and forgotten about.
Yup, lots of projects to work on today, but the auction was calling my name.
Maybe I'll get to them next weekend, if the boats not calling my name.

I am in Colorado. Our Fire Rescue has fairly new equipment. A CUCV for show and running errands would be cool.
You just planted a seed.
A company I worked for years ago bought some of the contracts from the company that built the CUCV's. I still remember some of the conversion process.
Congrats on your new trucks!

I wish I could get another truck. I would get either a suburban or crew cab and it would have to either be 454 or diesel and definitely 4x4.

I got a 454 suburban. I had plans to put it on a 4x4 frame. Well, you know how that goes, never got around to it. Maybe next weekend, maybe not.

I would love to have an M1008 as my daily driver. I'd take the log wagon ride and all. :)

Engineer, you have some cool trucks in you collection. If you got a M1008 you might find that it quickly becomes your favorite truck.
I have a M1028 that I drive daily in the nice weather.
Its hard to believe a bare bones truck can be so much fun.

So what did you find? Anything?

I gotta do something. I'm running out of space, and there might be another auction before winter.

This is the 1986 M1008. I towed it home from the auction the day I bought it.
The writing on the windshield reads " no batteries, no 4x4". Unfortunately it was also missing the radiator. There was 6 old batteries in the bed that I will turn in for a couple $$.
I stopped on the way home and bought some heated hose to tie the oil lines together. I used fuel line to connect the 2 tranny lines together.
I put 2 batteries in it. I cycled the glow plugs and hit the key. It fired up on the first try. I just let it run for a few seconds so that it wouldnt overheat without a radiator.
-
This is the M1009.
I have to pick this one up later in the week.
This one is also missing the batteries and the radiator. Unfortunately this one is missing both alternators (24 volt system) and the pigtails have been cut off). Luckily I have those spare parts off another M1009.
I'll post better pics once I get it loaded on the trailer.

Nice score

Yes it is. Its crazy what people are willing to pay for Dana 60's, especially with 4.56 gears.
I have a Dana 60 from an M1028 parts truck that has the limited slip in it. I've turned down big money for it. I'm keeping it as a spare for my DD M1028.
I'm going to get the M1009 tomorrow or Friday. I'll post pics.
-
Awesome!
-
Man, some people have all the luck, searched for a while for a M1008, before giving in and just getting a K10 truck. How do you find the auctions? I tried the gov't surplus sites, but they tend to sell in the 3,000 range
-
Picked up the M1009 today.
I found paperwork in the glovebox for the GM delayed warranty program (hopefully you can read it in the picture). My guess is that its for fleet vehicles that are not put into immediate use.
Well, I got the blank form.
My plan is to ship the Blazer & paperwork to the Chevy dealer that LTZ C20 works at. Sounds like a fool proof plan.

I can just imagine what the kid at the dealership would think when he recieved that paperwork
-
Got it home & started to work on it.
I'm going to tie the oil lines together & do the same with the tranny lines just to see if it starts (missing the radiator).
These trucks have some oddball stuff. This is the oil sample valve in the oil line. The Military uses it to take an oil sample off a running truck to annalise it.
I guess if they find to many oil shavings they auction the trucks off to guys like me.
I try not to think about it.

Wait wait what?? What's going on? What's this GM delayed warranty thing you speak of? I've never heard of it.

So your on board? Great, I think it will work (ha, ha)
I don't know if you could read the writing in my picture (cell phone camera).
There was paperwork in the glove box to start a delayed warranty.
I'm guessing its for fleet sales (or maybe just the Military). I'm thinking its so they can take delivery of a bunch of vehicles at once, then start the warrant for each vehicle as they go into service.
I've got the blank, undated form (I'll try to get better pics of it).
Will GM believe that the Blazer got rusty and has missing parts from shipping?
I can't even type this with a straight face, but its worth a shot.
-
Haha oh boy I can only imagine where this is gonna go.... when we get new cars we have to report transportation damaged to the transport company so they can get it fixed. I don't think missing parts and rust qualify as "transportation damage" lol. I can't keep a straight face thinking that you think this might actually work!
-
Oh boy this is going to be better than home movies. I am getting the popcorn and watching how this thread turns out. Oh yeah..
-
LTZ C20, I think your right on this one. As Timthescarrd pointed out, imagine the reaction I would get if i walked into GM dealer and showed them the paperwork. It makes me laugh just thinking about it. I'm sure most of the dealership employees have never seen this paperwork before.
1967KaiserM715, as far as the auctions go, Iron planet is a good place to start, as is the GSA website. For the local police & fire department auctions, you have to keep checking the local papers.
-
This is the oil sample valve that I mentioned earlier.
-
Yea I just don't see it working. Interesting looking valve.
-
i would try it just to get a reaction out of them then pitch a fit about it and demand to see the GM. then once you see him shake his hand and introduce myself then say i wanted to talk to the man in charge and walk away

the fed auctions bring top dollar for CUCV K-30 pickups
Around $3000-3500
Don't bother with them The local depts might have some deals on K-30s

I would pay the $3000-$3500 if its a clean, running & driving rust free truck.
All of the auctions have their pros & con
One of the big downfalls of the local police/fire auctions is that the trucks tend to sit around for a long time before they go to the auctions & parts are missing. The Blazer I just bought has been sitting behind the station unused since 2009.
I've had good luck at the GSA auctions. The prices are higher than the police//fire auctions, but you can hear the trucks run & see them drive across the auction block.
The online auctions like govliquidators tend to have the highest prices of all the auctions, but you get to bid from the comfort of your house. I've spent a lot of time researching & travelling to auctions & standing out in the rain bidding on trucks.
I've owned 16 CUCV's, so far the cleanest ones I've bought have come from craigslist. These are the 2 Craigslist scores

I regret selling the one I had now. That thing was mint

That certainly was a nice one that you had.
You regret selling it & I regret not buying it.
It was also the deal of a lifetime for the $$ you paid for it.
I got the M1009 started today. I tied the oil lines & trans lines together with these rubber line set ups I put together for the M1008. I put the batteries in, hit the key, and nothing, the starter just clicked. I put a spare starter in it, hit the key and it fired right up. I didn't run it long without the radiator in it, but I know it runs.
I'm guessing it was taken out of service when the starter died. As long as these 6.2's don't loose their prime and get air in the fuel lines, they seem to fire right up.
-
Sweeeet.

Nice!
-
I'm looking for a K-series to get me through the new england winter. Not so sure about the c-10, have not had a 2wd since my 79 camaro. Gonna need sandbags. Time running out... Plus salty roads r cumming!
-
I finally was able to keep my 73-87 obsession under control. I spotted this 79 crew cab at a county auction today. It was a bare bones truck with 41k on it. The body was real clean as far as rust goes.
It had some things I knew that GM made, I just never seen in person. I've never seen a 3/4 ton crew cab before, I know a few guys here own then, all the other ones I've seen were always 1 tons. It had no power steering, again, I've read about it, but never seen it. The 1 odd thing that I noticed was that it had a single gas tank on the passenger side. There was no evidence of it ever having dual tanks (no dash switch).
It went to a good home for $2500. I spotted the buyers square body crew cab dually 4x4 in the parking lot. I couldn't miss it with the stacks & Cummins sticker in the rear window. He said this truck will also get a 6BT someday.
-
The first step is admitting it Fitz, but is it really under control or just slightly tammed. Mine is under control by anorexic shape of my wallet or I'd have my suburban awaiting a Cummins swap already.
-
I would NOT have passed up the "mosquito control" !!
-

That truck was from out your way in Berkshire County. It was a cool truck in decent shape. I gotta finish up some loose ends on the trucks I have before buying anymore, unless I find an old plow truck.
-
Do you think its still there?
-
Do you think its still there?
No, it sold for $2500 at the auction the day I posted the pics.
-
no matter what i have i still want more and cant seam to sell or give away any of my other trucks. theres a bond that to me i cant seam to break
-
Usually a thick stack of $100's can break that bond. Just sayin.
-
The auction bug struck again.
Picked up an 87 M1008.
Its rusty but complete.
I put 2 fresh batteries in it and it fired up & drove it on the trailer.
The collection is growing.
-
Here it is.
-
Nice.
-
looks like a 1984 to me
-

This one is pretty rusty.
Good call on the 1984, all of the Military Cucv's (1984-1987) were built to the 1984 specs by GM.
-
nice. $$$??? funny seams like we tend to do things about the same time. this time i just put my crew cab cummins in a truck pull. didnt do too hot :-\. i mean i did so bad i got beat by a powerstroke ::) need to tune my beast cause she didnt even try to blow any smoke
-
Paid $525 for it.
like I said, its a rot box.
It does run & drive, but not road worthy.
Its complete, so all the parts I want are there, Dana 60 / 14 bolt with 4.56 gears & rear Detroit locker. The 6.2 starts right up and the turbo 400/208 seem to shift good.
This truck will get parted out, or it could live out its final day as a farm truck for someone.
-
525 for a 1 ton running gear aint bad. dont care for the 4.56 but for a mud truck that would be nice
-
SWEET!
-
SWEET!
Says the man who scored a rust free one for $200, now that was sweet
Irish, I wasn't going to mention my second pick of the day on a Chevy site, but you may appreciate it. It a sheriffs department van. A 2006 Ford E350. Runs & drives with 214k on it. Paid $800 for it. It will make a great movable storage container (just has front seats, no rear seats).
There county auctions can be fun.
-
oh man the miles ive put on one of those lol. except for some reason ours dont have tinted windows. which for security they should so people cant identify inmates
