On my "door handle removal" post i mentioned the multitude of new parts i was installing. Well, i did the front shocks fine. Then on the rear shocks, first one, lower bolt, had to use a sledge hammer to hit the socket wrench handle to loosen large nut. Then "Ka-pow", i hit my left pinky. It turned instantly numb, i thought...no not another black nail. But it was much worse than that. It was a pinch cut. Opened it up bad, and tip of bone broke. Had wife take me to the ER. Nothing but discomfort, discouragement and depression. Got some stiches and a splint. The healing process has started. Anyone else ever sustain a nasty little injury like that from their chevy? Perhaps in the workshop?

12-bolt axle I was rebuilding slipped off the jackstands it was sitting on. Luckily my pinky cushioned the drop to the floor. Tip of the finger turned colours of purple not usually known to skin, and was sore and numb for about a month.

Drilling out rivets for the front rear leafspring hanger the drill bit in and took my hand with it. Spiral compound fracture! 2 screws 10 stitches and 3 months in a cast.
-
Ouch! Just lost my breakfast!! I guess i dont feel as bad! Good feedback, keep'em comin...

1950's single speed on/off 1/2in electric drill, drilling holes in the frame for relocation of trans mount for new trans. Drill got just a bit sideways, that giant drill bit cut into the side of the hole and stopped, that 70 lb drill kept spinning and took me with it, pull me and my arm 180 degrees the opposite way I was facing originally. Thought it ripped my arm out of the socket, luckily it didn't, shoulder was sore for 2 days after. I have a lot more respect for that old drill now haha.

I'll say....close one bro!

It hurts me knowing my 81 step side has been sitting for 5 years with a blown motor.
Its painful knowing I can no longer buy 16.5" tires for my aluminum slotted rims.
As far as injuries, lucky its just been the normal skinned nuckles.

It's unrelated to working on the truck but this was a close call too. One time I was using a skill saw, was holding the wood with one hand, saw with the other, (see where this is going?) Got a little to close with the saw and sliced my right hand ring finger just above the top knuckle bend, got thru the skin but not the tendon or muscle, which I could see tho, that fast spinning blade cuts quick and at first I didn't feel it, bout 10 min later I did lol. Had to get a few stitches. Still got the whole finger tho, looks like I have 2 knuckles right next to each other tho lol. And the local pain killers in my finger wore off before the stitches went in so I felt every single stitch with that needle.

When I was younger (early 20s) and my 2nd truck was my 86 gmc I was under it working without safety glasses I had rust fall in my eye. Thought I got it out then a day or two later it was still bothering me looked in the mirror and saw that in my eye. Went to the er they looked at it and said I have a rust ring and there's nothing they can do since 24 hrs past and they eye has grown a layer over the rust. They said I have to go to a E.N.T. to get it drilled out. I couple days later it disappear all by itself.
My dad was out working on the nursery as a mechanic towards the end of his career due to his Parkinson. He was up on the radiator support and he slipped his knee went into the alternator fan
-
Why did i ever start this post! I gotta weak stomach man! Lol. Irish.....rust in the eye!!?? I hate rust anywhere near my truck, let alone stained in yer eye!
-
Oh, so what happened to the knee in the alt fan? Or do i want to know?
-

Rebuilding the front Axel.. Just got done painting it an started the install. Got the driver's side u-bolt barely in the top metal spring pad and I stopped for a second to figure out how on the world o was going to get it in...apparently I think with my mouth open bc the bolt popped out and broke out my right front tooth. Now it's fake!! What fun we have.
-
Ouch! Thats a bad one. When i was under my truck doing the front shocks, looking up i realized my large cresent wrench was just loosley on the bolt still hanging there. I moved real fast out of the way! Could have busted nose or tooth easily! Whew!
-
Oh, so what happened to the knee in the alt fan? Or do i want to know?
Nothing but a big scar. Don't even think he went to the doc cause the scar is about a inch wide and about three inches long
-
I can't count the number of times I've either slipped, dropped or thought the threads were started and they weren't and I've had to jerk my head away from a starter bolt going all B52 bomber out of the bottom of the starter and trying to Hiroshima my face.
-
Ok, glad he turned out ok. My pinky has a heartbeat! Time for pain killers! Weird, and i thought the front shocks were going to give me problems, thats why i did them first. Weird how the day can end so abruptly, then 6 hrs in the ER!
-
I have three small scabs right now trying to get the old bracket off of a boneyard rear bumper. One slip and scraped the top of three knuckles. Blood on the chrome!
-
Worst one for me so far... My tensioner rod broke off the driver's side vent window and since I had new weather stripping I decided to holdnthenold on in my hand and cut it with a razor blade to use as cleàrence for welding. Well brand new blade cut down through the tendons in My hand... What fun...
I just realized you !at have started a post that has potential to exceed any build post on the sight...
-
Whats a build post?

Build thread

We work on 40 year old trucks with enough rust, dirt, oil and grime that anytime we do something we'll end up cutting ourselves bad.
I just put a giant slice down my finger not sure how working on my brakes.
-
Giant? How giant,,,,how bad?? Details...details!
And yes, metal gets tuff when its 40+ years old. It fights back!! Amen for PB Blaster!!
-
This thread's been quiet for a while, anyway good news, dr said no more splints, only a bandaid. Bone is healing fast, could lose the nail though. Back to working on truck. (Never really did stop)
and wife said no more sledge hammers!
-
Got burnt on the exhaust pipe.

Got burnt on the exhaust pipe.
Standard operating procedures.
-
I have learned the hard way that Headers heat up fast. Like even 5 mins at idle will give you a good blister lol.
-
Have had many burns. Who's got time to wait for the cooldown to begin working!!
-
Changing rear brake shoes and trying to put a spring back on with a pair of pliers (don't do that), the spring slipped and the hook went under my fingernail past the cuticle. Just one of the many that come with the territory
-
Jeepers. I am constantly hurting myself in various ways. I can't seem to do a job without stabbing, jabbing, smashing or otherwise hurting myself. Fortunately, my injuries have always been comparatively minor. I'll be mindful of this thread the next time I get angry about hurting myself.
-
Im with you dr snooz. As far as terr yr85, ouch! Under the nail past the cuticle??!! Man thats torture!!
-
When I was younger I was working on a 75 model..don't remember quite what I was fixing but I was sitting on a chair and had a 1/2 in drive rachet with a huge wrench as a cheater...long story short...bolt broke loose hit myself on the bridge of the nose...broke it...2 black eyes and knocked out cold..i couldn't tell my friends I knocked myself out, so I said there was a fight but you should see the other guy..haha
-
2" steel pipe from the bumper reinforcements. I can't cut them off much more without taking the bed off.
Head meet steel.
Deep gouge, headache for the last 5 hours and had some shakes going on.. awesome day.
-
Stiches on that deep gouge? Tetannus shot?
-
Had all the expected when working on an old truck. Learned adjusting a carb in the dark is a bad idea, luckily my fan blade was dull, none the less my fingers were numb for awhile, then bruised and sore for a week or two. Worst injury though was not from an old truck but from my dads fiero, word to the wise, don't catch a transmission on your back...fractured my t7 and messed up my hip, took 3 years to get used to the normal pain, still have days its bad, and now my hip makes sure I know when I move wrong, which is why I hate working under the dash. And I definitely understand the starter bombing, those things are heavy and stubborn. I have also ran into the alternator fan, lucky for me it was just my finger nails, still hurt like a you know what though.
-
I just remembered that in a dual of knuckles vs. alternator van, alternator fan wins, knuckles loose chunks of flesh.
-
Dont wear a scarf when working next to the alt fan.
-
Dont wear a scarf when working next to the alt fan.
Don't wear a scarf EVER. They are not an approved clothing item for men who drive pick up trucks haha.
-
Ha ha ha! Isn't that the truth! ;D
-
hipsters wear scarfs

What about feather boas?

I'm gonna pretend the whole scarf thing never happened.

I was pulling the starter off my dad's old 82 and after dropping the bolt on my eye our cousin pulled up. He was coming over to shoot a pistol he had just bought and I forgot about it. He started shooting at the target we had set up about 30 yrds away and the casings somehow made there way into the open hood around the finder well and right onto my cheek lol. I just slid over and kept wrenching at the starter.
Then putting the tranny in my 82 I ripped my thumb nail off on the fly wheel. I had shut it in the door about 3 weeks before an had it taped up. But of course the tranny fluid works the tape right off lol.
-
Yup, the famous black nail. Closed by thumb in the car dr, black ugly nail for about 6 mos. , 10 mos later all normal. Worst part is, i play classical guitar, one hang nail and it messes things up.
