Okay, so this is my first post. Firgured I would put up some information on my truck and what I am doing with it.
I wanted to build a project with a purpose. Something that might benefit the 4x4 community. So this last spring I bought an old Chevy truck with the plans of making it into a dedicated "Clean Up" truck. (I never have enough room in my Jeep to haul much trash). While I want the truck to be good for hauling trash, I also want it to send a message that we are not just out there tearing up trails. I want people to know that people and companies care enough about the sport to build trucks specifically to clean up and maintain our trails.
I have a whole plan for the trucks build up and then how I am going to show it to get the message out. I am still open to ideas and still have a lot to do.
I have been a bit slow building the project. Mainly becasue it is only me working on it.
Here are a couple of pictures. It is still very rough
: and needs lots of work. Just thought I would share.
Sorry for the picture size.
This is a long way from being complete.
I would like to thank the following companies for caring enough about the message and helping me out with this to this point. (Holley,Weiand, Flowtech, Allied Racing, Superlift, KC Highlights, Bushwhacker, Tuffy, Hobart)
The truck is a 1974 Chevy 3/4 ton longbed "Camper Special" has a 454 with a valve rattle(motor needs some love), TH350 that I want to convert to a 700R4. I have no idea on the t-case 203 or 205. 14bff rear/D44 front.

Very cool.
I have been having a lot of fun building this truck. I am usually building Jeeps and cars. I feel like it has been a little hard finding a good forum for the truck.
I am on ColoradoK5.com. Obviously a good place for 4x4 stuff. But I am always looking for good ideas on interior, etc.

Ever just have one of those days?
:
I have all these cool KC lights for the truck. 2 Driving, 2 Off Road and 2 floods for the rear bed area.
The "bumper thumper" that came on this beauty when I bought it does not have enough space in it to fit the 6" round lights. So I drilled holes in the bumper for the driving lights.
Then I ground off the existing light tabs on the bumper thumper and they still would not fit. (drilled more holes in the bumper with no luck). Then I decided I would just have to drill holes in the side of the bumper thumper thingy. Man....that thing is tough!!!:hail: I have a monster drill and a whole collection of bits and it took me nearly an hour to get the first hole done!
Then only 1/4 the way into the next hole I snapped a bit off.......time to quit for the day
eer:
eer: I will revisit is later.
(Time for a fancy custom front bumper

I need to figure out how to post these stupid quick camera phone shots in a reasonable size(easily).
These are 2003 VW GTI seats. (fronts and part of the back seat used for the center section) I still need to finish the center. Thinking about using a Tuffy Console instead. There is a 20" span between the seats
: Two Tuffy consoles?

Hartley TNT is awesome!! They made this custom grill and dontated it to the cause.
Here is a pictures of the new grill on the way. You really should check out their website for some very cool grills. www.hartleytnt.com/
I will post more pictures when I get it and get it installed.

It appears that you are using typical PHP code instead of EZboard code to link the pics.
I also think the size has a little to do with it possibly, in addition to EZBoard.

I have a 74 that I am building into a dedicated trail clean up truck.
I am a bit undecided on the color. I just received a Hartley TNT grill for the truck and need to make a choice on the final color of the truck.

Thinking of Rescue Green(2007 Jeep Color), OD Green (mroe modern metallic version, Leaving it tan, Bright Silver, Charcoal Grey.
Thoughts?

I can't view the other pic, it is blocked, but...

My Blazer was Charcoal Grey and looked awesome! There's pix of it on this site...
My next truck I build is gonna be Lime Green and everything is going to be blacked out. Even the engine is gonna be green!

-
My new grill finally got here from www.HartleyTNT.com.
They donated this to my "Trail Clean up" project. KC Highlights donated the lights you see mounted in the grill.
Since I am not sure what color I am going to paint the truck yet I am also not sure what color to paint the grill. So what you see here is bare metal. I just wanted to test fit it to make sure everything was going to fit right.
I was also curious how it mounted before I got it so I included a quick mounting picture. Just have to drill 4 quick holes and its done.
I like it!! What do you think?

-
Well, I must be nuts. I stumbled upon a crew cab shell that needs lots of love. I have always thought this project would be better as a crew cab so that you could haul a couple of guys up to a trail to work on it. (Plus I have always loved these old chevy crew cabs.)
Figured since we were going to tear the whole truck down to do paint and body anyway we may as well do it on the crew cab and eventually swap over the other parts. I could use all the help I can get if anyone wants to work on it. (Or would like to buy the other shell when I am done)
-
Okay, here are a couple of pics of the Crew Cab.
I know! Crazy Project.
Here it sets in my garage with the original trail clean up project truck. I will be swapping everything over in the next few weeks.

Cutting out the old floors to put in the new floor pans.

The hood stripped of all the paint and bondo that was on it.

The pimpin' seats. There are two sets of these front and rear. They are actually in pretty good shape.

My assistant:whip:

Looks like someone already converted it to the Short bed (unless the camera angle is throwing me off).
I think it is cool. I would love to have a crew cab. It would complete my collection. Chris Lucas

It was converted to a short bed. Which I really like. It is 13" longer than my std cab longbed.
I really wished the original project had been a crew cab. I went looking for parts and found this truck so I am now going to swap everything over to this one.
It needs a bit of love!

Scott (Gunter) doing his deed to the cab floor. Thanks Scott!!!!

The disater! Moving the old tired 454 from the old truck to the new.

-
Do you have to deflate the tires to get 'er in under the garage door?
Enjoying the pics, keep us updated!
-
The rest of the shell went away today. I am back down to 1 truck in the garage
(although it is in 1,000 pieces
: )
-
So the old truck left the building last week. Making more room to work on the new one. Did I forget any parts off of it?

Scott keeps coming over and cutting chunks out of my truck. Hopfully soon he will start putting some metal back in it. We also did some cleaning of the frame and front clip prepping it to go back together. (the rest of my crew bailed on my this weekend, and then they wonder why it won't be ready for Moab EJS?

Doesn't look too bad from this angle and lighting. Check out that new tailgate, Superlift Rockring and I'm sure a few other things.
-
We just got HUGE support for the project from painlesswiring.com/.
I'm VERY excited about this. This will make a huge step toward reliability and functionality.
Sorry for the quick camera phone pic. I will take more as we get this stuff installed.
-Complete 18 circuit replacement harness.
-700R4 tranmission harness
-6 pack relay bank
-6 switch panel. (KC set us up with 3 sets of lights so this will be good for this)
-
Guess it is about time for a quick update. Our plans were to have this thing together WEEKS ago. But for some reason we have slowed down.
I need to wire it, paint it and assemble it. Scott still needs to finish up the body work. (I have been welding and grinding on the body.........You should NEVER let me near your truck with a welder:D )

Bodywork has been much slower than expected. Here is the most recent picture just for fun. We have lots of cool things going on the truck soon. I will post as I get them on.(http://www.t-mobilepictures.com/photos/photo18/9d/77/9cab4f847bdd.jpg)

Bodywork has been much slower than expected.
;D
Boy.. Can I ever relate! My K-10 bodywork and resto. project ended up taking YEARS more then I'd originally imagined it would! I couldn't believe how long the details and minor stuff ends up taking. I've learned just how much patience and talent bodywork truly takes, mine was certainly a learning experience!
The truck looks awesome, this is a killer project.. I have been following this thread and can't wait to see it done!
-
Spent the day playing with the welder. ;D
We put a bed patch in where the 5th wheel had been. Patched up the last of the rockers. Just need one spot on the back of a rocker and a small section of the passenger floorboard and it will be 99.9% rust free and all steel again. ;D
Also completed a bit more of the wiring harness. Getting closer to a running truck that we can paint.
-
FINALLY got some more time to work on it today. Got the transmission fully bolted in and some of the cooling lines taken care of. All the front clip has been wired, except for the KC lights and the Ramsey winch for the front.
Need to finish the cab wiring which will include all the Nodskog gauges and Painless 6 switch panel.
Need to wire the back of the truck and the Bulldog winch on the back of the truck. Both winches have been outfitted with Synthetic rope from Winchline.com. Very sweet stuff!! I will get pictures up soon. Still need bumpers to mount them in.
Jeska cleaned the sweet 80s seats that came with the truck and I think I will have to keep those for the moment.
-
Looks awesome dude! Sounds like it will be killer when its done.
-
I get a fair amount of emails and comments wanting more updates. Here is where we stand.
Well, our plan was to have this truck together before last Moab EJS. That obviously did not happen for varios reasons.
I would really like to make this a nice rolling billboard/kiosk to show the public that some 4wheelers care about out environment and trails and are doing things to help that.
It was farily important to me to "recycle" an old truck. (that and it is fun). The bodywork has just taken a bunch more time then we had planned.
I really appreciate all the companies that have donated parts for the truck. And those couple of local guys that have donated wrenching time.
Our hurdle at the moment is juts getting paint and graphics on the truck. Our budget contraints have just slowed the progress. To accomplish the ultimate end goal is going to cost a bit of time and money.
Several people have offered to send parts they have laying around if I make a list of stuff I need. I would say save the shipping cost and just paypal a couple of bucks if you want to help.
Here is a basic list of what I still need to do if anyone has ideas, resources or just wants to chip in a couple of bucks.
---Bodywork, Need to finish mudding and painting(need paint, paint work, mud work,)
-Want to put a 91 style grill/lights on the truck. Have none of the parts yet. 9just gives it a much more modern look)
-I would love to "wrap" the truck in graphics showing people in their 4x4s cleaning up the trail. Wrapping is pretty expensive but I think it will show the point much better. Need good high quality pictures of people and their rigs cleaning the trail.
-Ramsey and Bulldog have both donated winches to the truck. Winchline.com donated rope for both winches. At this point I have no bumpers for the truck to mount these on.
-need rocker protection for the truck. Something that people can step up on to put trash in the truck would be perfect.
-Need to build a rack for shovels/rakes and trashbags for the back of the truck. Can't go over cab high and obvioulsy want to make some thing that looks cool. Remember this is for the public to see as well as be a good work truck.
-Drivetrain- Truck as a tired LS6 454 in it. Holley donated a truck avenger carb, wieand intake and flowtech headers to help me get it up and running. Still a tired old motor. Would love to run this off something cleaner. Propane or even a diesel swap. This stuff just requires us to throw some money at it.
-I have a 700R4 (K case) and 208 in the truck. Really want the overdrive so that I can drive this thing across the country to 4x4 events. I have no idea the condition of the transmission yet. Guy I bought it from claims it is good. Painless dontated the overdrive kit to run the 700r4. (not installed yet as wer are still wiring the truck).
-Front axle is a D44. Not sure why, but it is. I don't plan on the truck seeing any REAL heavy wheeling but it would still be nice to have a D60 up front. (anyone have a spare they want to ship me). Gearing is currently 4:10 but would like a more appropriate ratio to turn the 37s.
-Rear axle is a 14bff with drums. Want to swap this to disks. If for no other reason it will give more people a reason to explore the truck. Better stopping would be nice also. Truck needs to be able to tow and haul.
Interior- Truck came with some very retro 80s seats. We cleaned them up and they will work. Obviously somethings cooler and more comfortable would be nice. I plan to haul groups of guys/gals up to clean up days
-Needs carpet, headliner, trim pieces, Charcoal grey would be perfect. RAAMat Audio donated full sound deadening for the truck. Should help keep the noise down.
-Radio-One guy gave me an old head unit for the truck but still missing speakers, Need a CB.
-Nordskog donated a great set of gauges that I still need to build a custom dash for. Open to suggestions, help.
-There are a couple of big expenses that would speed the process up a bit. I would love to get this thing done by MOAB EJS next year.
If anyone just wants to help out for $5, $10, $100 or whatever it would be greatly appreciated. When we do the graphics I want to find a way to put the names of everyone who has helped on the truck.
paypal is cford@rockcrawler.com
I am open to other ideas, suggestions and help. This project is designed to be for the community by the community.
There it is, my recent update. Now off to the garage to finish wiring the truck.
-
This winter, I'm going to be building a headache rack with somthing to hold shovels and rakes and such for my dad's '84 regular cab long bed that he uses for hauling brush in his tree service, I can take some pics of it while I'm building it and what it looks like after if you want some ideas.
-
Would love to see the pics when you are done.
-
Just a quick update.
Got a chance to work on the truck some today. Opened up the 700R4 to install the Painless Wiring Torque Converter Lockup controller. Pretty simple Job all and all. Also changed the filter and fluid. Old Fluid looked pretty clean so hopefully this transmission will work pretty well. (or at all).
Also did a few misc things. Got the vaccuum lines hooked up for the transmission, tranfer-case brace, one cooling line, one heater hose, got new grade 8 bolts installed for the front 2 body bolts, bolted on the hood (even though it is bare metal, make it easier to work on), fixed the broken spark plug, installed the painless brake switch and vaccuum switch, and then rotated the tires on the Jeep.
-
Little bit more of an update and some thanks.
Shawn, (smalltowncowboy) is an Amsoil dealer up in Oregon. He took money out of his own pocket to ship me some oil for the truck. This is great stuff!!!
Brigham (5280k5) came over the other night and brought two 12 packs of Fat Tire. Not really sure what we did after that!...........just kidding. He helped with the Painless wiring kit. We got the headlights and taillights working and the ignition. So technically if I turn the key now the thing could start. (we actually have a bit (ton) more work to do before that point)
Baby Steps.
-
Just got these much needed disc conversion brackets in the mail today from http://www.diy4x.com/ (http://"http://www.diy4x.com/"). We had to do some restoration work on the brakes on this old truck. Thanks to the donation from DIY4x4 we will be able to convert the 14bff to discs much easier now.

Some days I just feel like I am posting to myself here.
I got 1/2 the carpet I ordered from "Stock Interiors" and it looks to be short on one side. So far not real impressed with them.
Spent most of today finishing up the first layer of RAAM Audio sound deadening on the floor.

That looks good. I wanted a custom charcoal gray. But if the second set gets here this week and sucks I will let you know.

I can get you any color that ACC sells.

Well, I stumbled upon a better bed off a truck on Craigslist. Bought the whole bed. It's not perfect but it is a much better platform than the one we have been working on. Brigham (5280K5) brought over his working crew cab and helped more it Jordan (stogie25) and John (not a 4x4 guy) provided extra muscle to help get the thing into my garage.
Anyone want a patched up, cut up short bed? I need to get rid of the other one now. (and I have 2 perfect tail gates too)

I could use a headliner and all the trim pieces to hold it up. Have a source for that?
-
I have had a couple of strange ideas about the old bed.
Option 1:
Bob the back off of it, reweld it to the front half (eliminating the wheel wells) and make a "Garage couch" out of it.
Option 2:
Cut it down so that I can mount the back half to the garage wall with a working tailgate and make it into a fold down workbench that could be used for welding small stuff etc.
Hmm.......Evil thoughts.
-
I could use a headliner and all the trim pieces to hold it up. Have a source for that?
Unfortunately not. I am trying to do the same thing to mine. A pickup can provide the front window surrounds and the rear panels and surround. A suburban will give you the pieces over the 2 doors, but there is a piece that goes between the rear pillar and the back door that is only for a crew, haven't found one.
As for the headliner, I only can get the bow style, but you would really want the other pieces to make it look right. I am trying to get someone to make one, but haven't had much luck yet...
-
I just think a headliner would make it that much more quiet and comfortable inside. But I have not found one yet.
I considered using some expanding foam (soft kind that won't buckle sheet metal) and filling the cavity in the roof through the running light holes. This would help kill road noise and kill the tin can effect of the roof.
-
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!
So the whole point of using an old scrapped truck was to "recycle" it. I just can't seem to win with this truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brigham and I took the old bed off the other night and noticed a crack rasied up out of the 14bff. You have to understand that I powerwashed this diff several times before you could even see it like this.

I was really hoping to NOT have to put time, energy and money into the axles!!!! Can't wait to pop open the front now.
You would be absolutly AMAZED at the wierd random stuff I have had to deal with on this truck.
Anyone have some extra 14bff parts, complete 1 ton rear, etc etc laying around????? (Anyone want to come rebuild this???)
I know many of you would think this is a complete truck at this point. (those of you surfing the net from the couch on the front porch).

What an odd ball truck. I had to use a universal radiator hose because the end on the radiator is bigger than all the late year trucks and further away than all the early trucks.

Well, I decided to just throw some cash at the problem this time. Ordered a new Detroit locker, new caddy calipers, new rotors, pads, brake lines etc. This "should" fix up the rear axle and help get the truck on the road....um...trail.

I must say....I like your project...It cought my eye pretty fast..I cant wait for new pics

Thanks. I will get some more pictures soon.

Carrier is fine. Detroit is on it's way. :D Ground down and welded the crack shut mostly just to keep water out.
We also took the drums off and got the DIY4X disc caliper brackets mounted. Waiting on the calipers and discs to arrive!!
-
Well last night I got the DIY4x.com brackets on the truck. Thanks again to the help of Brigham (tools, beer drinking) and the generous donation of the brackets from DIY4X. Just for reference these are Eldorado calipers, 3/4ton front discs. I still have to make all the lines.
I also got the Detroit Locker in. Looks like we may have a working rear axle again soon.
Couple of quick pics for fun.

So have you heard if the ebrake function on those el doroado calipers works well or not? I am debating whether to keep the stock e brake setup and use those calipers or just use some regular calipers and add a line-lock.
-
I have heard that if adjusted right it works fine. I will post back when I get it out and working.
I just made the brake lines today.
-
So I was cruising through Craigslist Saturday and found a crew cab being parted out. There was not much to it but I needed a set of the door sills to install the new charcoal grey carpet I bought for the truck.
The crew cab had a full headliner board and trim so I picked those out of it too for just a few bucks.
I bought some "microsuede" in charcoal to redue the headliner. Might do all the trim and doors in it too. (not sure yet).
Anyway here is a picture of the before and after of the headliner work. Sorry for the bad camera phone pics. It is late. Just need to finish it up and install it now.

Great find and great work! How did u fix the broke corner?
-
The holes in the corners are where the sunvisors go. Plus they get tucked behind the trim. So at this point I have not done anything to those areas.
-
I made a little progress over the last couple of days.
-Have the carpet abotu 80% in.
-Have the headliner about 80% in.
-Actually have the front set of seats 1/2 bolted in.

In this picture you can see where the frame is spliced. Many people have asked me for the measurements. The frame was cut 7" from the back of the cab. The center hole on the crossmember directly behind the cut is 8.5" back. Then the tail of the frame was cut off for the last part of the bed. Hope that helps.

Looking nice. I'd like to see more of what you did with your headliner and trim there.
-
What type of rear diff cover is that? Was it expensive? It looks bad :(!
-
The trim and headliner is just "micro suede" I found it at a local fabric shop for about $13 a yard. I bought 3 yards and have quite a bit left. I used 3M headliner contact adhesive. I just sprayed and wraped the headliner, trim, door piller mouldings. The "A" piller and "C" piller were too complicated of a wrap so I just coated those with 3M bedliner spray. (too complicated for my skills, I'm sure someone could do it)
I picked micro suede because it repells dirt and stains really well but looks high dollar and adds some comfort.
The "rock ring" on the front and rear differential are from Superlift. I "think" they are about $130 each. Superlift wanted to help build the truck so they donated the covers along with the lift, shocks, and brake lines to help me get the truck together and on the trail.
Hope that helps some.

I got a little work on the truck today. Mostly got the garage cleaned out in the nice weather so I have a clean place to work on it again.
Pushed it outside to clean out the garage...........I have been PUSHING this truck around for nearly a year now........I will be sooo excited when I can just turn the key and drive it back and forth. :p

I know the feeling can't wait for some good weather to empty m y garage and clean it out. Truck looks good nice project.

Got attacked by a wolf last night working on the truck. Tried to get some camera phone pictures of the event.....here is all I got....(crappy camera phone, but kinda funny pics)

For some reason Foster just decided he wanted to hang out under the truck with me. Turned into a petting fest and I did not finish much.
Got a temporary exhaust on the truck. The mufflers were brand new from Flowtech. They were mounted at a funky angle in the other truck and conflict with a cross member on this one. Just sawzalled off the ends and can at least fire the truck up now and drive it to an exhaust shop to get them remounted and have tail pipes made.

-
sweet truck. i'm going to start mine soon, its pretty much the same setup. can't wait to see more pics.
-
Fired the truck up briefly today. Radiator leaks......JB weld!! Trans leaks.....new fittings......no fuel delivery.......not sure what is going on there. I have a new fuel pump. Just not sure the switching valve is working right.
Tossed the new bed on the truck. Kinda like the color, maybe the whole truck should be that color. Strange thing is that the bod holes are off from the original short bed. (??????)
Couple of quick pics.

Strange thing is that the bod holes are off from the original short bed. (??????)
How so? Did you compare the two? Was one of the beds a modified 8' bed?
-
The original short bed was a short bed, not a modified long bed.
The rear holes seem to be off by about 1/2 inch. I compared the two and they are indeed drilled differently. (I know...strange). For the moment I redrilled the rear two frame holes to at least bolt it down.
-
I love this truck. The wife wants me to build her one with 40's, but crewcab 4x's are hard to comeby around here. May have to start with a 2 wheel drive and convert.
-
how difficult would it be to convert a 2wd crew cab to a 4wd crew cab?
-
If you had a comparable donor it would make it MUCH easier.. 4x4's are out there though.
-
There are plenty of trucks out there that do "solid axle swaps"(SAS) to get rid of their IFS front ends. Would not be any harder than that.
Find front leaf springs, weld in shackle mounts, find front axle, transfer case, shifter, driveshaft, steering etc. (easier to keep looking for a 4x4)
-
I am giving thought to using a 4x4 lwb extended cab frame from a ninety something truck to build one...it would need to be shortened 5". For what I would do pulling a stock trailer to cattle shows and the sale barn it would be perfect with the IFS.
-
This post is awesome... Clearly a shhhweeet project that you've got here. I've been following this post since the beginning and I can't wait to see the turnout.
I hear ya with the comments about the weather! I always find myself begging for some decent weather right around this time of year but at least these make it tolerable....
Frozen tundra... UGH...

So today I bench tested both pumps......
The brand new electric pump makes noise but does not actually pump!! The cam lobe on this engine must be just flat enough to not pump the mechanical pump enough.
Bought a block off plate today, exchanged the bad electric pump for a new one. Wired it all up and it fired right up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT'S ALIVE!!!!!! For the first time in a YEAR I pulled it forward into it's storage spot UNDER IT'S OWN POWER!!!!!
I still have lots of things to do before trying to drive it. But that was enough for today.
-
MrK5 from Coloradok5.com has been working on some signage for the truck. Here is a teaser of one of the things he has come up with. What do you guys think? He has a sign shop here in Colorado for those of you that want to check it out http://www.biltritesign.com (http://www.biltritesign.com)

I think you should get him to put you truck on there since you are the one haulin it out...
-
Well, it is my Jeep in the picture. ;)
Here is the original pic.

-
Ahh, then you should photoshop the crew behind the Jeeps. ;)
-
Logo looks pretty cool! Where will it go on the truck?
-
Think we are going to do some big ones for the doors and maybe a smaller one on the tailgate.
-
After a weekend of work with Brigham I took the truck on it's maiden voyage today. First around the block, then to the autoparts store and then to the closest dirt to take a few pics. Still a LOOOOOONG way to go with lots of work but it was nice to get it out of the garage.

Just wondering how the detroit locker turned out. They're pretty much the cheapest thing out there for my 14 bolt and almost unbreakable from what I hear. Is it pretty clunky on the street though? I was just wondering how "streetable" it is and if the clunking is that bad.
Thanks.
-
I have had Detroits in Jeeps in the past. With a manual transmission and short wheelbase it can be pretty clunky.
Most if not all of the clunkiness goes away when you install them in a vehicle with an automatic transmission. (The auto keeps a constant pressure on it so it never releases and bangs like in a stick). You will still get the occasional pop or clunk but for the most part in a big truck with an auto you should never really notice it.
I only drove the truck a few miles yesterday and did not notice it at all.
-
SWEET!!!
-
Right on. The pickup looks good!
-
Took the truck to Midas today and had them put on a real exhaust.
Soooooo much more work to do, but at least I can move it around now and run it down the road if I have to.
-
Just some more progress and a couple of pics.
-Fully sound deadened the front two doors with RAAMat BXT and Ensolite. (Thanks to Rick at RAAMaudio for donating the stuff to the project)
-Installed an old Sony stereo I had laying here. (Radio only, CD broken).
-Bought some 6x9 speakers to fill the holes in the doors and have some sound.
-Figured out that I am missing a "Heater Relay" under the dash so I can't get the heater to work.
-Installed the front cab vents. Passenger side works great, driver side is broken.
-Sparyed the hood to keep the raw metal out of the elements for the moment.
-Replaced one of the two rear windows that were broken. Need to replace the other one and have them tinted.
-Temp install of the Nordskog GPS Speedo. VERY VERY COOL STUFF. Now I just need to do the rest of the gauges.
-Installed front seat belts. They are blue........ugly but safe.
-Have a pretty big oil leak from the oil pressure sender.......guess that will be next.

Today I made a temporary set up for the Nordskog gauges. I plan on a full custom dash at some point but it is going to have to wait at the moment.
So here are some camera phone pics of the temp set up. These Nordskog gauges are WAY too nice not to be in a cooler dash. (I can post better pictures later)

cool, gauges look good
-
i was contemplating going with the Nordskog gps unit myself, but ultimately decided to go with the Cyberdyne digital tach/speedo combo; i need extreme accuracy because i'm getting very anal about mpg research.
The main reason was due to the Nordskog gps priced at around 380-400 while the Cyberdyne tach/speedo was 120ish. Speedo only unit would have been around 60-70.
In retrospect, i probably should have gone with the gps unit---much simpler wiring.
-
GPS unit was VERY simple to wire. Just 3 wires. (+,-, illumination).
The only real drawback is that it stops working under over passes and in tunnels. ;D
Cool for me and the 4x4 though to be able to run different tire sizes at will without having to change speedo gears, etc to have an accurate speedo.

Taking the truck to get the bed Rhino lined at MaxAir by Park Meadows Mall.
We were talking about Rhino Lining the rockers too.
My question is how far up would you line it? There is no real break in the body lines.
My first idea would be just the area below the doors.
Second would be to follow the line at the bottom of the stripe on the back door. It should flow all the way back to the line at the bottom of the tail light.
Thoughts.
-
IF you are going to go to the factory 2 tone line, I would pull a line from the bodyline below the tailight to the front of the truck. Are you going to paint it?
-
I agree. I think the line from the tailgate to the front would be best.
We are going to paint it. I asked the guys at the paint shop and they want it lined first. ??? Guess it is easier to tape it off and takes less paint/bodywork.
-
Id like to see a truck that is nothing but rhino line...Iv herd of it sounds like it would be kool.....
-
I think it would be cool too if done right.
My problem is that you can't stick decals to Rhino. Since I am building the truck to not only clean up the trails but dleiver a message I need clear painted space to display that message on.
I have considered doing the old school two tone paint scheme but using Rhino for the top and bottom.
-
That sounds good also....I no what u mean about the decals...Way to much Texture
-
Well the truck got dropped off at MaxAir (e470/I-25) yesterday for Rhino Lining. I'm not even really sure what they are going to do. They were excited about the project so I gave them a bit of artistic lisence.

What are they doing? Spraying the bottom and then you are going to paint over it? How are you going to have your paint layed on if you rhino line it first?
-

My Guess is that they are spraying the Rocker Gravel Areas first(Hopefully they will do the lower inner door jambs as well, then say good bye to rotten rockers in the future 8)), then it will have those areas masked off at the next paint booth, and that shop will paint all or most of the surfaces with regular paint..... A combination that I would like to eventually have done on my truck when ready, along with another area or two Rhino Lined as well, before the actual paint is applied.....
-
I asked the guys at the paint shop which should come first. They wanted the Rhino sprayed on first. Guess it is simple enough to just tape it off and only paint the rest.
Not to mention the Rhino should hide some of the body work much better than paint. Meaning we don't have to have it absolutely perfect under the Rhino. (Which is where most the work was)

Rhino-lined rocker panels... sweet! ;D
Now you just need some armor plating...

And then his Gas Tanks Coated with Rhino Liner Battle Jacket

Okay so I think about Military Style Trail Proofing when building a truck, doesn't everyone ;D
-
Stopped in to check on the progress today.
MaxAir got the bed shot. Bottom and bed are done. (paper masking is still on the truck). They also did the inside of the rear fender wells.
Couple of bad camera phone pics.

The guys at MAXAIR did a great job.
Bed is all done, they did the rockers all the way down the truck and the inside of the front and rear fender wells. Amazing how much quieter it made the truck. Combined with the tons of RAAMat sound deadening I put in this truck it is actually really quiet to drive.
They did the bed a little extra thick since we were going to be using the truck for real work. Also did it over the bed rails.
Still ugly as can be. But the Rhino looks nice on the bottom. Now it just needs a little real paint on the rest of it.

Off to a Great Start on the finish 8) 8) Can't wait till I can have that done on my truck :-[ Curious, where did the bed braces come from(I remember them from when you got the short bed, but do you know manufacturer info) ???
-
The braces say "ProNet" on them. The bed also had a net tailgate when I got it.
-
I am pretty excited to get it up to the Carnage Canyon Clean up next weekend...
But as far as the build goes here is what is on the list.
-I need bumpers front and rear to hold the 2 winches. (15k Ramsey and 12K BulDog both with rope from Winchline.com) I also have 6 lights that KC Highlights donated that I need to mount.
-Need some rockers/steps. Want to do something that runs back to the bed that you can step up on to throw stuff over the side. Plus it could be easier to get into
-Need to fix some oil leaks. (valve covers, oil pan, oil pressure sender)
-Need paint obviously. But first I need to do some prep work, need to fill in the cab light holes on the roof with either cab lights or just weld them shut.
-Need to find a stock hood, (personal preference)
-Want to build a rack for the back to hold rakes, shovles, trash bags etc. Hoist for big items into the bed.
-Oddly enough one of the first items I have on "my" list is to convert the front two doors to power windows/locks so that I can get the rear door windows to work (they were already power). I can't roll down the rear windows at this point and that is turning into a big deal with the dogs. So they are pushing this item. I have all the parts I need, just need to do it.
-I have a 1991 style radiator support I need to install so I can put a 1991 grill on it. I just think they look cooler so it will help with the over all presentation.
-I need to hook up the 4x4 shift lever before next weekend and make sure 4x4 actually works.
-Eventually I would like to find a D60 for the front. Not critical since it will never be a hardcore wheeler but I feel the D44 subtracts from the trucks cool factor.
-I need to hook up.fab up the parking brake.
-Still need to wire the heater, wipers, hazards. Need to rewire the fuel tank selector and rerout the fuel lines again.
-I have a 6 switch control panel from PainlessWiring too that needs to be installed when some of the other items (lights, winches etc) get installed.
-Need to order a oil pressure sender and get the oil pressure gauge working.
-Need the carb REALLY tuned. I still get a little stall from time to time and it bogs under hard throttle. To compound the problem the neutral safety switch only works in PARK right now. So if it dies I need to come to a COMPLETE stop to restart it.
It still needs LOTS of little misc things worked on in the interior too.
I'm sure the list is actually longer than that but that is all I can think of on a Monday morning.
-
TIRES!!!!
Toyo liked what we were doing with the truck and stepped up with some tires. I had to pay a few hundred bucks in shipping, but nothing to complain about really.
I know some of you are going to hate me for this but I'm putting 35x12.50R17s on the truck and the 37s that are on it now can finally go back on my Jeep where they came from in the first place.
While I think the 37s were cool. I think the 35s will be a touch more practical for a rig meant to be loaded with trash on a trail and not really a hard core trail rig. Trust me when I say that it took a very strong fight against my own testosterone to put smaller tires on it.
I only had time to mount one tire tonight. This is going to be a project all by itself. The Allied beadlocks have 32 bolts per wheel and I have 10 of them to mount......yes.....10! I have to take the 37s off the beadlocks and mount them back on the Allieds for the Jeep. So that is 320 bolts just for the beadlock rings. Now throw in the 32 wheel bolts on the truck and the 20 on the Jeep and you get a fun day playing with 372 bolts!!!!!!!!!!(not counting spare tire lugs, valve caps etc)
Here is one of the 35" Toyos mounted next to the 37" MTR on the truck now. (also a neat shot of the Rhino lined rocker)
I finally got tired of the Red/Black/Blue/Silver/Grey paint job and did a temporary black paint on the front of the truck. Still debating what color to really paint it. If anyone wants to photoshop this picture with some suggestions feel free. (hint hint)

Good thing you have air tools.Maybe its just the picture, but those mtr's seem a bit small next to the toyos.Must be goodyears idea of a 37.
If your going to switch to a 91 grill setup, are you not going to use that sweet in grill light setup?
-
You mean this?
It was made by Larry at http://www.hartleytnt.com/ (http://www.hartleytnt.com/). He only makes them for the older style trucks at this point. He was going to make me one for the newer style truck but then seemed to drop off the face of the Earth. ???.
I shipped the original one back to him because we were going to trade it out for the new one. That was about a year ago. He seemed like a great guy, just got busy with other things I think. You can contact them at their site above. Maybe if he knew there were others out there interested he would develope more of them.
-
So I got up early this morning to head up to the 16th annual Left Hand Canyon clean up day. Remembered everything except my camera....DOH!!
Four of us hopped in the crew cab with our rakes and shovels and made our way up to Boulder.
For the most part the truck worked great.....low range works but for some reason the front end does not turn. With the 14bff having been broken when I got the truck there this a large chance the front D44 has a broken R&P or spiders in it. (time to find the missing D60).
We hauled more loads than any other truck there. Filled 2 giant roll off dumpsters.
Couple of quick camera phone pics. (sorry, next time I won't forget the camera).

Curious as to why beadlocks instead of tubes? i don't know anything about 4x4 which is why i'm asking.
-
When four wheeling, especially on rocks you deflate your tires to allow them to conform to the surface better. Letting the tire wrap itself around a rock will give you more contact and mroe traction.
Here is a quick picture from Shawn Pagans article on Allied Beadlocks from Rockcrawler.com
(http://rockcrawler.com/techreports/allied_rockathon/images/rock_flex_280.jpg)
Many times air pressures are run lower than 10psi. With a tire wedge in between rocks you can run into a couple of problems. First the tire can have more grip on the rocks than on it's own rim, so it can spin inside the rim. Secondly it can pop the bead off since there is a very low psi holding it to the rim. Beadlocks prevent this. A tube would not at the same psi.
Here are a couple of examples for you.
This is my Jeep in Moab a few years back. You can see it has the same Allied Beadlocks on it as the truck. With 37" tires. All of the weight is pushing downward on the drivers front tire. Without the beadlock there would be a good chance of pushing that bead right off of it's seat.

i.c.
i don't know or really care about 4x4---it's sort of like a different dimension for 73-91 trucks. Yet, somehow i'm curious about it all.
So.....what exactly are you cleaning up? Junk left by other 4x4's or nature?
-
There is a constant battle between the 4x4 world and the eco-nazis trying to shut down trails and close forest access.
There are a couple of problems that get associated to the recreational 4wheelers. Most of the problems are created by new wheelers, campers, kids partying in the woods, and shooters all leaving trash behind. All of these groups use 4x4 vehicles to get into the back country and get lumped in with the recreational 4 wheelers.
It becomes a case of mistanken identity and a few bad apples giving the rest of us a bad reputation.
The clean up day pictured above is at a trail just outside Boulder, Colorado. There is a part of the trail where shooters (not 4wheelers) haul junk in, shoot it up and leave it. In an effort to keep the area open to the 4wheelers the wheelers go clean up after the shooters.
Unfortunately areas like this get a bad rap because they show the mess and list it on "such and such" 4x4 trail with no distinction between those who take care of the trail and those that trash it.
-
You've probably already heard this before, but those rhino-lined rocker panels are sweet! ;D
-
Thanks. ;D
-
I have been slacking a little. Tore some ribs off my spine in the back so that has slowed me down a touch.
I have a line on a D60 center section for the front but I would need ALL of the supporting parts. Waiting on a list of missing parts. Then I will post details.
I also got rid of the cowl hood and got a pretty straight stock hood on the truck. (cowl was pretty warped)
-
DOH! :o

nice drivin!

Ouch!

That will BUFF out !! ;D ;D
Now the light will need some super glue. You did pick up the missing lamp pieces ???
Rock Rash IS expected !!
-
being that you're off to this great of a start, i think you might wanna think exo-cage...:)

So I took the truck out to help a fellow Jeeper get some parts for his new Jeep. Well his garage is in a tight downtown type alley off a very busy street.
I pulled into the alley to unload the stuff only to find that someone had parked a trailer in the alley blocking the exit. So I had to either try to back out onto a super busy street or turn it aroudn in the tight alley.
Well, I tried to turn it around by pulling backwards into a tight yard/driveway. There was a BUSH on one side........that apparently was hiding a much larger and solid object below the sight line of the bed. dang it!!! it was the nice perfectly straight side too.

DOH! :o

Shouldn't be too hard to massage out, and probably even easier if you could take the bed side off.... Sorry bout the odd area dink though, one of the many reasons why I would like a Burlier Version of Safari Style Guards for my truck(I'm Clumbsy enough on my own, and my Wife Freaks when she can't see behind/ infront of us when I'm driving ::))....

Totally love the project idea it kind of reminds me of mine I started out building a truck with a flat bed that wasn't so high put sides on it made it dump blasted and painted the frame put a super clean cab and clip on this thing then decided to really make this thing stupid and build a huge motor (383 full roller) and now it it has got to be the the oddest truck out there 3/4 ton 4x4 that will light the tires up then go dump some trash. Kinda looking forward to getting a couple scratches on it so I can go play in the mud or go off roading. Can't wait to see your truck done!
-
Just a quick note. This project is not dead. Just been unable to work on it. Will get back to it soon and get some more pictures up.
-
Whew! I was beginning to wonder where you went.
-
Hurt my neck at the start of the summer. Have not been able to work on the truck.
95% better now and can start working again.
-
At the last trail clean up 4x4 did not work. Everything was spinning but the front end.
I'm feeling a bit better and thought I would tear into it to see if I could fix it quickly (like broken spider gears) so we could use it to help build the Carnage Canyon Challenge Route this weekend.
Here is what I found.

What this truck really needs is a front D60. Anyone have a spare?
-
Shrapnel, Ouch!
-
I'm still here!!!!!
My "day job" is as a financial advisor. So you can imagine I have been a touch busy this year.
I plan on getting back to work on the truck and hoping to see it working even more this summer.
-
I was beginning to wonder! Any new progress?
-
My computer was stuck doing some updates and I was near the truck with a camera.
I have been trying to get motivated to do some more work on it. So going out and snapping some pictures may help.
These should give you an idea what I still have to do....a small idea.
I want to swap out to the 91 style grill. I have a radiator support, just need the headlights and grill pieces. Also need to build a winch mount for the front, bumper etc for the Ramsey 15K winch with Winchline.com rope on it. Also have 4 KC highlights that need to go up front.

I need some rocker protection with a step, needs to be easy to step up and toss stuff over the bedside right in front of the tire.
Also need a rear bumper. Need to build a rack in the bed to hold shovels, rakes, buckets, 2 more KC lights and a BullDog 10k winch with Winchline.com rope.....and cut out the fenders for the Bushwhacker flares to make room for those 37s.

Roof needs some love. Really need to finish up the body work (which I suck at) and get some paint on it.
....and of course my big hurdle at the moment is that the front axle is broken. It NEEDS something bigger than the D44.

truck looks really cool I really like the decal on the back..
-
"MrK5" on ColoradoK5 made the decals for the truck. He owns a sign company in Colorado.
When it is painted we plan on putting something like this on the side. "This truck was recycled from scrap by people and companies that care about our trails. It will be used to take care of our trails so that they may be used by all generations."
-
Awesome truck, awesome cause. Two thumbs up
-
Glad to see you still moving forward with plans.

I like scallops. As long as they are in period correct style. And I like your scallops alot better than those on that Furd.
-
Cool To see your Crew cab build.
Great ideia for clean up duty.
Wish their were more 3+3 tech articles.
Oddly enough my 1988 4wd Crew (6.2L Th-400 / NP 205 came with a HD D-44 up front too.

Thanks man.
I am moving VERY slow with the progress at this point. It has become a great shelf in the garage most of the time. ::)
This is about as close to a recent picture I have of it. ;)
