Title: HELP ME!!! BUMPERS ????
Post by: VileZambonie on May 21, 2007, 04:00:16 pm
Ok I have decided to ditch the roll pan because I hate it so I am going to put on a standard chrome rear bumper. So 1st off does anyone have a non step bumper they can take a fex pix of it for me? Also between the rear bumper and the tailgate is there a filler panel like on the Blazers? I notice   does not list one but I don't want to see ugly brackets between the bumper and the bed.

And finally does anyone have any brackets or these parts they might wanna get rid of?

They came with the splash shield, but I haven't found anyone that makes a good quality repro...

SELLS AN EXCELLENT REPRO OF THE LH AND RH FILLER PANELS.....ABOUT $10.00 EACH....BRACKETS ARE AVAIL FROM GM;NOTE OUTER BRACKETS ARE SAME AS SUBURBAN/BLAZER AS IS THE BUMPER ...MOST SUBS/BLAZERS CAME WITH THE SPORT BUMPER ...

No one has any pix of the filler panel? I pulled a set of bumper brackets off of a truck and on the way home it must have fallen out of my trailer. PIST! So I still need bumper brackets if anyone has a parts truck...

that looks cool, I thought about doing something lilke that too because I hate the gap between the body and the bumper on some of them I've seen. The blazers look ok with the Filler panel in there -

MIKEITH,... from what part did you cut the brackets bumper side , chassis side or thye center part ?    also how much did you cut out of them?

The brackets blofish posted are not going to work on a 73-80 GM truck.  I have my bumper and brackets off and none of them look like that.  Unfortunately, I can't get a pic because they are at my painters.

As far as sliding the bumper in, all one needs to do is elongate the holes on the brackets where they bolt to the chassis...thus allowing the bumper to slide in closer.  However, if you have 56" springs, this will not work as the bracket sits tight against the rear spring hamger..so you will also need to shorten the brackets as well as elongating the holes.

The filler panel (or gravel shields as they are called) are basically flat pieces of steel (with added ribs for strength) about 8-12 long that bolt between the top sides of the bumper brackets.  There are two total, one for each side of the truck.  You could easily make one nice long one, paint to match the truck, and would look 1000 times better.

The pieces blowfish showed on the pics. are the center brakets for a suburban and/or blazer. This center set of brakets will not fit the trucks, since burbans and blazer frames are longer.  you can use the outside brakets from a burban on a truck only!

CORRECT..went thru this a few months ago on mine..you can use the burb outter brackets, but not the inner..I fabbed some from flat 3/16" steel, cut to shape and drill holes..easy project..(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v502/leadfoot3232/bumper_bracket.jpg)

I am about to do the same bumper project.....I found a "donor' Suburban, and will also get some nice buckets and console from the same truck...this rear bumper setup looks GREAT and will eliminate the "cowboy type" rear setup I have now.

I guess I should have worded my earlier post differently,I used the stock suburban inner brackets, but fabbed a flat adapter plate to bolt between the frame and the burb brackets..  clear as mud? :P
I kept the center console out of the suburban I parted out planning to use it in my truck, but I built a formed sheetmetal hump and welded it to the floor to mount the B&M Pro-stick shifter on before i got the console and it's in the way..call it poor planning ::)
