Here are some pictures of my doors after epoxy, and three coats of 2K primer.
This picture is with guide coat sprayed on so I can start sanding:

thats looking pretty good. cant wait to see it painted. i just finished painting my truck minus the bed today. so how much longer before u have everything done? haha
-
I am doing it piece by piece. I have the hinges, hood and bed left to do. I'm hoping to have the painting completed by the end of February. It's been a long process :-\
-
Looks really good. I wish I was ready to start priming! Not even close yet.
The invite is still open for you to come to Austin and do my body and paint......
I'll even help!
-
Are those new doors, your originals, or replacements?
-
those are replacements I picked up at the junk yard. They are off of a 1991 Suburban. My originals were too much work to try and repair.
Thanks for the compliments.
-
Lookin good.

Here is an update on my project:
I do bodywork and paint in my heated detached garage and assembly in my attached UNheated garage:
Time for some wiring:
(ignore the orange peel in my door :-[)
I have the interior lights, heater fan working along with the power windows and door locks. Had to replace the drivers side lift motor (still have all my fingers - THANKS to this forum and Jeff's 73-87.com/garage site).
I have the wires going to their respective place but have not tied most in:
Truck as it sits right now:
I have the bottom of the hood painted and should finish painting the top this weekend.
Thanks for looking - Jeff :)
-
I like that blue, man. What is it? Looking sharp, keep up the good work.
-
Jeff, I am going to merge this with your other post? Looking really good BTW.
-
Thanks for the compliments :)
The blue is Southern Polyurathane inc. viper blue.
That's good Chris - I didn't know where to add updates since I have many threads started ;D
-
I can merge all of them into a rides thread and you can update it as you go...
-
Ok that will be fine - thanks Chris :)
-
it looks like its coming together nicely. i like the engine you got in there too. so r u going to give this to your son when ur done or keep it for yourself?? haha
-
very nice very nice looks like fun i can not wait to get started on mine

Yes, he will get the truck :D :D
Thanks for the complements. Now back to wiring........
-
it looks like you have a LOT of wiring left...enjoy it hahaha
-
i might have missed it how old is your son
-
He is 17, a high school senior. He was accepted to a local four year college with a four year Army ROTC scholarship.
At first I was going to keep the truck myself. Especially, since he quit on me (suppose to be a father and son project) - I put up almost all the money and time. I am making it a gift to him - so to speak.
One reason I am keeping it stock - I know how I was at 17.
-
Looking great, I can't wait t get back on ours just been pretty busy with work and still trying to aquire a few more parts keep up on the progress. And congrats to your son.
-
hey JJSZABO how much was the garage it is nice i bet it is good to have a warm place to work
-
My detached garage is 16x24 and it is insulated and heated. I built it myself for around 7000. It is two stories. This is the garage where I do all my body and paint work.
My attached garage is 20x20 and it was built with my house. I also built my own house. The attached garage is where I store the truck while it is getting rebuilt. This garage is not heated - I am using a Kerosene heater to heat it while I am out there (it is COLD).
-
do you know the price for the 20+20 and do you have a enough space in it i am going to have a concrete slab poured for me and then build a garage so i just want to make sure that it would have enough room
-
Looking real good. Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming.

I have a 20 x30 garage and its getting too small quickly. Build the biggest you possibly can.
-
ditto on what pugsy said ......my two are too small
-
I had to shorten my garage 4 feet when I was building it. I figured ehh no big deal but now I wish I had it!lol
-
Looks REALLY GOOD!
Whose wiring kit are you using? Plese keep the progress and info coming.
-
I am using a 18 circuit, universal Chevy truck, Painless wiring harness that I bought from a board member over at fullsizechevy.com (I got it for 150.00 :P). I am almost done. I still need to attach the ends and to the distributor wiring and the fuel sending unit. Then wire up the back lights and I'll be ready to test it out. I ment to do a writeup on the process, but I want to do a writeup on the Dakota Digital install first.
The harness comes with the fuse panel and all the supply wires. I still had to use many old ends from my old wiring harnesses. I had to reuse the old interior, heater, horn and rear light harness. They were in good shape still - just needed cleaned up. I had to buy alot of crimp connectors and heat shrink tubing. So far I have about 35 hours in the wiring, but it is starting to take shape. Here are some pictures:

it looks good jjszabo your son should like it i know i would

Did I tell you all, I HATE WIRING. I finished the wiring last night and hooked it to the battery charger as Painless stated in their installation manual and here is what happened. When I put the key to the run position I get a wierd clicking noise comming from the fuse block - relay? When I test the heater fan, the clicking continues about 5 clicks then the clicking stops and the right backup light comes on.....can you believe it :D
Now, here is what I believe is going on - I have a Dakota Digital dash. I pulled the fuse to the Dakota dash modules because Dakota Digital says to test their system using the battery and NOT a battery charger (something to do with cleaner power) and I did not want to test the Painless wiring harness using the battery incase something went wrong. Also, I am not using the stock nutural safety switch - I am using the Dakota Digital safey switch (built-in) along with the backup light connection. So when I put the key in the run position, I think the clicking is comming from the nutural safety switch relay that is trying to close but can't because I don't have a signal from the Dakota Digital module (is has no power right now).
Are you confussed yet??
Now, what I think I have to do is (since I didn't blow any fuses while testing with the battery charger) is to connect everything to the battery and see what happens with the Dakota Digital added to the mess.
Does anyone have a schematic of the horn switch? I forgot how the horn button goes back together :D
As NASA says,"calm down and work the problem, people."
I'll keep you informed.
-
I hate wiring also. Thanks for paving the way for the rest of us.
-
I believe you are on what is called the "bleeding" edge. Thanks, O Brave One.
-
Ok, I spoke with a Painless tech and he seems to think that the neutral safety switch is trying to energize without a signal from the Dakota Digital module. He says, since I didn't blow any fuses or see any smoke :o when I initially tested the system to go ahead and hook it to the battery and see if that solves the problem.
Also, I didn't have the entire fuse panel powered up. I was missing an entire power leg to the fuse box. The wire numbered 915 from the alternator need to be hooked to the battery charger also because it also supplies power for the fuses - I was only powering wire 916 - Go figure :D
See:(http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/jjsabol/EngineWiring001.jpg)
-
You'll be cranking this today then right?
-
Not really :) - I want to get the Dakota Digital dash working so I have working gauges. Then fill the crankcase with oil and prime the motor using an old distributor shaft and drill, so I can verify oil pressure...Then, if everything checks out - maybe this weekend ;D
-
Another question - is the front side marker lights suppose to flash with the flasher or turn signals?
-
flasher and front turns flash together, markers are alone.
-
Yep, the marker lights do not flash, they are just on when the parking lights are on.
-
Markers should flash, mine do/did...
-
hmm... been 6 months since I had a front end on mine, guess I forgot. :-[
-
The wiring is WORKING!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
I connected the battery and finished wiring up wire 915 and turned her on - no clicking, the Dakota Digital dash turned on and WOW. Everything programed properly with the dash.
The marker lights were not working - found out they were just blown bulbs :D I was pulling my hair out trying to figure what was wrong. I still need to test them to see if they blink or not.
Horn is only working intermittently. Once I unlock the steering column it stops working. Can someone tell me how the horn works in the column. I'm thinking of installing a rebuilt column (I got sand in it when I was sandblasting rust from my body repair areas (I even covered the column, but sand found it's way into it).
Other than that I should try and fire her up this weekend - if weather cooperates.
-
well it might be how your horn is contacting in your column do you have the steering wheel and turn signal switch and horn contact on the column
-
Update as of 3-20-08. Put down some sound deadener - duct wrap that I bought from Lowes :D

If you see anything out of place - please let me know.
Front grille with new trim and bumper (I do not like the aftermarket trim - may look for GM stock Trim).
That's it for now - I just finished installing the rear window and will post more pics.
Thanks for looking
-
Looking Good Jeff!
-
looks very good it is going to a nice truck
-
Looking good real clean.
-
Nice!

good idea.

Yes, it's just Thermwell Foam and Foil Duct Insulation - 12" Wx 15'L x 1/8"Thick, to insulate both heating and air-conditioning ducts, foam and foil - no ashphalt or anything that will smell when the truck get hot. 15.00 dollars per roll. I used three rolls and 1 roll of foil tape.
Thanks guys! ;D
-
I've got a ton of that stuff since I just put central air in my house :D
-
Have you tried using it in any of your trucks Vile? Just curious how well it worked.
-
Update.....my interior is about done.
Headliner - I bought an old headliner out of a junkyard truck, pealed off the old liner and glued on new headliner. I painted the visors with Duplicolor vinyl dye/paint
(http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/jjsabol/IM001347.jpg)
All headliner trim was pulled off a junk yard truck and cleaned and repainted with vinyl dye/paint.
Drivers side.... The door is from a 91 Suburban with all it's interior trim. I removed all the carpet, relined the carpet areas with grey headliner material and the bottom panel with black vinyl. I also got power door locks and windows - all plastic trim pieces were painted with Duplicolor vinyl dye/paint. The small trim piece at the top left was painted with Duplicolor wheel paint.
Drivers side door.....same as passenger side. I reused the Suburban four gang window switches for now. I plan on converting the four gang to two gang in the future - not a big deal for me right now.
Dash....is a dash pad bought from Chris on this site. It fit pretty well and although would not pass as a show piece it is great for a daily driver. I tried to recover my old dash myself but failed when I ripped the vinyl trying to streatch it. I could have done it over but didn't want to spend anymore time on the dash. With the cover, just some initial prep work, fitment and some trimming and I had the dash on in less than an hour. I think it looks good!!
Back cab trim.... I made my own back cab trim with some luan board and chipboard covered with black vinyl.
My digital dash.....
Thats all for now - if any one wants specifics let me know and I'll elaborate on steps and materials.
Oh and I forgot - the carpet is from Chris - ACC carpet that fit like a glove - Good stuff!! ;D ;)
-
Lookin real good. :o
-
Jeff, It really looks awesome! You're doing a fantastic job on this truck. The back piece is very cool! I was planning on doing something inside my GMC like that but hadn't decided yet...Maybe I'll copycat you! lol
-
Thanks guys ;D
Copycat away Vile - 5'-0" x 15 1/2inches piece of luan bought from Home Depot with some chip board bought at our local craft mart. I used the chip board for the end curves. One piece glued to the rear of the luan and one piece glued to the front of the luan to make a sandwitch sort of speak. Then glued on black vinyl. I let everything dry and installed to the rear of the cab with some left over stainless steel fasteners. I drilled into the metal that bridges the ridges in the back of the cab - if you know where I mean (this way I didn't drill through the back of the cab). That's it - had it done inn about two hours.
-
Looks really good Jeff! All of it.
BTW, did you know we offered a rear piece for the cab?
-
no... post a link
-
:D :D no lol, yes post a link ;D
-
Jeff, That looks great! I like everything you did.
Chris, we really need to get the catalog updated with all available parts. I know now to ask first, but have bought stuff in the past I did not know you had.
-
Looks great
-
This is a link to the rear cab surround. It has been availible for almost 3 years..
http://store.73-87chevytrucks.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=7&Product_Code=RD-3065&Category_Code=7387INT
I am trying on the catalog. I got too many irons in the fire :D
-
How tall is that? Do you havy any pix installed?
-
Nice job ;D
-
How tall is that? Do you havy any pix installed?
It goes to the bottom of the hump on the rear. I don't have any install pics, but I think bigblock73 might. He bought the first one I sold.
-
You guys are making me jelous. I gotta get my rear in gear and finish my truck. Looks great!
-
I fired the truck up for the first time on Saturday. ;D When I initially tried to start it - it back fired through the carburator. I had the distributor 180 degrees out (pointing to #6). Fixed that and it fired up as soon as I turned the key. WHEW!!!
I watched the tempurature and oil pressure while I was running it at 2000 rpm. I ran it at 2000 rpm for 20 minutes. The oil pressure stayed at around 50/51 psi, the tempurature stayed around 190 degrees and the voltage was 14.5. Everything sounded good (LOUD) and although there was some intermittent misses (still need to time it - I was by myself when I did this) everything went as expected.
Now for the gremlins >:(
1. The fuel gauge not working - still reads 0.0
2. Interior lights staying on when doors are shut - I had this working.
3. Passenger side window motor quit working - it heats up and stops working.
Now for the good news, besides it starting. When I finished filling the transmission, and put it into reverse - the rear wheels started to spin when I tried to back her up (no bed on it). BOTH WHEELS SPUN - posi-traction ;D Looks like someone replaced the rear - still need to take off the diff. cover and see what the gearing is.
Well that's it for now - I'll post a video when I get a chance.
-
Well here she is:
Still need to wire the back lights :D
(http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/jjsabol/IM001493.jpg)
Here is a good side look - I need to do front end work before I put the new tires and rims on the front:
I want to do some stripes - How would you do them any suggestions? Nothing heavy
-
Looks good!
Can I move this to your original Post?
-
looks good man i hope mine turnes out like that
-
Awesome! I wouldn't stripe it. Are you planning on lowering it? It looks like it sits pretty high. What are you putting on for mirrors?
-
Looks good!
Can I move this to your original Post?
Yes, sorry, I can't remember where I had it :DAwesome! I wouldn't stripe it. Are you planning on lowering it? It looks like it sits pretty high. What are you putting on for mirrors?
I think it looks good without stripes, but my son thinks there should be some.
I don't know right now. My son doesn't want it lowered right now. We will have to see when we get the front tires and wheels on. These are the mirrors I will be putting on. The ones that came off were in really good condition, so I will reuse them. I want to color sand and buff before putting them back on.
-
Congrats on getting it back together, looks great! Lower it a bit and finish it out.
-
NICE! Great looking truck! Love the color! :o
-
Man. Great job, Jeff! :o I noticed on your signature that your boy lost interest. Has he changed his mind now?
-
Amazing how a little paint sparks new interest ;) Great looking ride! I think I hear it asking for a drop job.
-
Man. Great job, Jeff! :o I noticed on your signature that your boy lost interest. Has he changed his mind now?
LOL yes he has. He has been the one that got me going on it again.
He has been helping now - when he comes home from college.
He can now see the end results ;D

I like those mirrors the best.
