Ok need some help and info...I want to install new gauges in my truck "aftermarket" what do i need to do to set them? cut up the old one or buy a plate?? and what do i do with the factory stuff? like the blue sheet on the back of the old cluster? and do i just tap into the factory harness
-
Hey Red :)
Go here and follow Jeff's install on gauges:

-
Wanted to update this...I bought the white gauge over lays for my Fuel and speedo also bought a new set of white face sunpro gauges and a white face vacuum gauge..And a metal support for them that will replace the cheap plastic one on the original gauge cluster..So the after market will mount to the old cluster..I cut the plastic on the back and solder it together to reconnect the ground..Sine i will no longer be using the factory wires on new gauges and dont want the plastic hanging around...So when im done i will have new gauges and old all mixed in with eachother...Will post a pic later of my hack/chop/solder job on the old cluster
-
In this pics you will se before ande after i cut the plastic cheet striped back the plastic to expose bare copper...i then tined a wire and solderd it to the plastic with out melting anything i then took my meter to make sure it will work..and it does...

Ok well today i redid my harness so that my cluster will work....And i got every thing ware it needs to go...Only one thing i cant figure out....And its not in any manual i got or the stuff vile was able to supply....What color is the wire that is used for the Brake light??? Other then that i think i got this down..Since im not using any of the wires for temp/oil/amp..The wires that i could not figure out....So if any one can think of the color of that brake light wire please let me no...
-
It's not the tan with white?
-
only tan and white i got is 2 of them on one connector for my fuel gauge..Or so my Chilton book says?
-
Well today i got my metal bezel...Person that had it kinda did a cheesy way of cutting it for gauges he had in it..But it works well..I also received my kit from whitegauges.com will be installing that later on in the week...

-
Dang man you get that all fixed you ain't goin to know how to act looks good though.
-
lol...yea i i haven't had working gauges in a long long time...When i test fitted it to the truck it looked flawless...Only thing i dont like is my vac gauge has that led controller with 2 knobs to control the color and it does this rain bow thing....all these settings just to get yellow...But that kit from whitegauges.com looks to be good quality tho...

And some more od and ends...If i would of just been clear headed i would of just bought the digital gauges from chris and had better looking gauges for almost the same price....But once you get in so deep your stuck so take a loss or keep on pushing
-
I am in the process of putting in Dakota Digital gauges (I bought from Chris :P) - Install is complete, finishing up with the rest of the wiring.

No pictures or a Project Topic on this?
I still have to put mine in!!!
Me too!

Upcomming, I just finished the module installation last night and my unheated garage was 30 degrees. It's COLD - Brrrrrrrr. I ran out of Kerosene for my heater. I'll take pictures tonight ;)
-
No biggie. I wouldn't be out in 30 degree weather with a heater, so you won't hear me complaining.. I was just hoping some one that got one from me (other than me) would post a Project article on the installation.
-
Well i thought to top of my gauge install i would go to auto toys and buy that metal trim that goes around the din cd player...Ok so 35 bucks later...They sent me a plastic one with no holes in it to mount it And the picture has the metal one in it? So now i have to send it back wait 6-8 weeks for a refund cause they no longer make the metal one..I mean if they new that then why even send it? and this plastic one wont even fit right ..So beware all....

I just got a metal one from Crutchfields - no more than two weeks ago.
Try www.Crutchfield.com

;D
-
i found the one i wanted on ebay..With the metal that goes around the cd player....got it cheaper to....Also got me some Aviation type switches with the flip up lid for my front and rear off road lights..I still gotta go buy me a stock gas and speedo tho cause my wife tossed a baskit on my cluster and broke the pointers
-
Red I have two you can have - I don't know if they work, you are welcome to them. ;)
-
I sent u a message about that
-
Hey red I replied - sent PM
-
Here are some pictures - if they don't work, use them to replace your broken needles.

Yea ill take em for sure....i dont see why they would not work. There pretty solid..Till you wife throws a basket on them cause your getting read to put white faces on them lol :D
-
Well got my off road light switches in...Any one else ever block of the vent and do something like this? at first i was going to install another gauge but went with this...What do you all think? should of went with the gauge? or this? or the vent?

-
Not bad. I kinda like it and it makes sense to have them next to the stock switch. Just needs some labels.
-
I like it ;)
-
Im not even sure i would get labels on it...Might engrave in the metal ...
F Lights B Lights Then fill in the engraving with black paint
-
Well im still lost about them wires....Cant get the fuel gauge to work right...
it looks like i should just have 2 grounds and then a Tan and white...But it moves it past fool..Then if i use a Dark brown wire..That acts like a ground it goes way past empty....Then if i touch the other Dark brown wire against 1 or 2 of the pink wires with black stripes it does the seat belt buzz but dont go off....So thats it...All i need help with is the seat belt and the fuel gauge....And also if i put a black ground wire into the Fuel slot it lights up both my turn singels and My chilton book is crap

can you se the pinouts? if not click on the links
here's what you had
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y228/Sabaka454/withoutgauges.gif)
here's what you are putting in.
All you have to do is match up the connector in the picture to be like in the second picture and then you should just plug it in... Take a look at them and compare with what you've got.

-
hmmm cant get the link to work
-
Ware do i find the colors at on the diagram?
-
vile....i hate to ask u for the color code again...but ur the only one that will put up with my 1000 quastions about the same thing lol
-
hey red was your truck a custom deluxe?
also was it a light truck?
if so i can get you the pinout off my cluster with the colors to help ya out.
-
yea man 1986 Customdeluxe swb k10
-
Didn't i post that in your other thread already? That schematic I just posted isn't showing you colors just circuit numbers and pinout locations.
-
no i looked at that...My truck has diffrent color wires then that....That and im getting mad at it...So old the ends are snapping off the wires....I dont have the time or money to get a new wire harness and another set of gauges...i already spent 400$ on this junk cause it keeps breaking
-
well when i wake up ill get ym harness and take a pic of wires and such and let ya know what mine were.
-
redneck do you have a meter? I think you need to just do a few continuity test.
For example, take the coolant sender wire and hook it to one end of your meter, then take the other probe and touch each wire until you find the one that has continuity. Then just put it in the proper pin location in the connector.
-
That would help kooler....And vile would i be looking for ohms or just volts?
-
Ohms Ω. Or continuity test if your meter has the function. Most decent ones do and will beep if you short the leads which makes it easier to test. It may have a diode symbol which looks like an arrow with a line. When shorted it should read zero.
-
yea i got a good one ill try that..
-
Well...I got it....And the oil leak.....Leak was from the oil pressure line...And I ran a new wire from gas tank...
-
Good job Red ;)
-
everything is working?
-
Not the seat belt....But i found the wire from the brake light...It was on the junction box on the cross member....A dark brow wire...It was a ground wire coming of a sensor...But i had to run a new Wire from my gas tank cause I found the wire...But the wire was funky looking...Even tho it worked i wanted to replace it...So i slid the bed back and replaced it....But yeat all the lights work.....And the gauges :D
-
ok...SO every thing was going good...Got the oil leak fixed and I bought the steel plates for my frame repair.....SO...Went to start my truck...Click Click nothing...Ok...So i put it on charge for one hour...Checked it with my tester put a load on it....Looks fine...Checked the acid...Thats fine...Started that truck up Checked the alternator...Thats fine..Checked my starter...Lil weak....Shut truck down...Went to start it...Click Click..Battery is dead.....Battery is brand new...Battery has a Cut off switch...So no battery drain...Could my alternator regluator be bad??
-
the battery passed the load test? Sounds like a dead cell ...
-
yea...Im not even going to take it back...I should just drop in a optima...And say good buy to this Valucraft
-
If it's new just return it! Optima's are nice but a lil pricey. You can just get a good AGM battery for less.
-
I should....Its only got 550 cold cranking amps....And autozone is o so sure thats the right one
-
They probably just gave you the cheap group 75 battery. Get the 34DT-DLG Duralast. That's a better autozone battery
-
Thanks vile...I bought the duralast gold 1000Cranking amps
