Sent out some parts Friday for powder coat. Can't wait to get them back and swap over. Picked up some gm nos tank hangers, spring hangers and front hanger braces. Spent some time and ground the edges smooth and blasted.
-
what color are u powdercoating them?
-
Where are you located and who does your powder? I was thinking about driving all the way to Powder X in Tennessee if I couldn't find a local shop. How much do you think it would run to have a full longbed bare frame done?
-
The parts are going on my blue truck. The color is sparkling silver. I live in Owosso Michigan and the guy that does this for me is like 20 min away. He is crazy cheep. Prices are going up due to fuel costs. He charged me 450 to powder coat my frame plus sand. I had like 600 total to completly sand blast the frame and powder coat it. If I did the work myself I would have had way more than that into it and I had a week turnaround and got the frame back.
-
That is a decent price. The local guy I got a quote from says he doesn't media blast, he just powdercoats, so i'd have to pay someone else to do that and lug it to two different shops. Oh well, I guess you have to do what you have to do if you want it right.
-
Got some of the powder coat back today ;D
-
Wow, stuff looks great. The guy that does it is he private or is it his business? If so will he ship parts?
-
He runs his own shop, not sure if he does shipping but I bet he does. Here's the website, call the 7613 number and ask for Chris.

WOW those are nice ;)
-
Those came out really nice! Are you doing the entire frame in silver?

The whole frame is already done, just swapping out some of the parts I wasn't happy with. Here are some of the build pics, the radiator support is also powder coat.
-
While I'm on the subject here are some other parts I got powder coated during the build.
-
couple more
-
I think i'm in love! Have you installed the parts? Do they seem more durable than paint (less likely to scratch)?
-
You wouldn't happen to know the gm numbers on the tank brackets would ya cuz I'd like to look them up.
-
Powder coat is WAAAAY more durable than paint. And it looks awesome!

The ones I showed as build pics are all installed. The new parts I don't all have back yet am getting ready to install. Parts seem to turn out way better than paint. Like my door hinges, flowed into all the areas where paint doesn't and as soon as it's out of the oven it's done. No dry time.

I scraped the stickers off before I blasted them but I'll look later, I may still have the number.
-
ok that be good cuz mine suck LOL. I can't find part numbers online but a member here has some, but I wonder what gm wants new for a set.
powder coat is definately more durable then paint, POR-15 is compared to being as tough as powder coat, and we know paint aint tough.
I'd love to have junk powder coated or do it myself cuz I bet it's not cheap to have done, but I have all the stuff to paint at home so it's really cheap.
-
Has anyone tried to do it themselves (Powder Coating)??
I am trying to talk the wife into letting me do it I am selling it by telling her she is getting a new oven :)
here is a link

I don't have the space to do it now, but maybe later on. Small parts arent' a problem, but it would take my entire garage space to put in an oven big enough for a frame.
-
Frogman you're gonna be posting from the Days Inn when she finds out she can't bake a pie in that oven! :D
-
Picked up the rest of my powder coat today but the project is going to be delayed another week because I gave him a set of nos brand new gm front spring hangers I had too and some other misc parts. So, I will wait for those before I dig into it.
-
Whoa.. Man that truck's gonna have all the parts powdercoated from head to toe at the rate you're going! Awesome!
Great project, keep us posted. This one's going to come out NICE.
Really like that blue color btw..

Wow, powder coating the tank hangers, I hope this isn't intended on being a "daily driver" :)
Unfortunately, I'm on a little tighter budget for my resto project. For example, I'm thinking of doing a "poor mans" powder coat on my rims, a.k.a. POR-15 (silver).
Has anyone else tried this?

I am currently getting powder coat done for free ;D I built this truck for the sand dunes. I don't drive it daily and will never in the winter but I also want to have fun with it. The entire frame is already powdercoated. I am replacing some parts I am not happy with.

how did you get that stuff off your frame like what you got powder coating i think you done it with a big rivet gun to put it back on
-
Looks good.
HR you can bolt all the parts to the frame with grade 8 hardware.
-
can you use a rivet
-
those rivets are heated to red hot and slapped in the hole and held by one worker, while another guy with a pnuematic air hammer flattens the other side.
bolts are the way.
-
man i was thinking that you could take a big rivet gun and do it that way i guess bolts is the way to go

-
I used grade 8 bolts. There is really no way to do it with a rivot gun without taking the sheetmetal off, which i didn't do. Deff would want to rivot before any paint work if you ever use them. I have heard a lot of people tell me that stainless will never be more than a grade 5. I have talked personaly with a high quality bolt mfg. and he tells me they make a high tensil stainless bolt that is equivilent to a grade 9. Last I talked to him was about 7 years ago and they were $3 for one 3/8-16x1" bolt. That is what I planed on using on my new frame for my 80. I was going to look into these again sometime.
-
sorry for me asking but where is the steet metal at and i would like to do it with rivets if it is not hard
-
I just mean the box is in the way, as well as fenders and such up front. Can prolly be done to some of them but most rivots there is no way to do it with the box, etc on. I have done this before and is almost a must to have two people to do this right. You can easily slip and bung up the frame, that's one reason I use bolts. You will need to find a supplier to get the attachment for your air hammer to mash the rivit down correctly.
-
thank you i am doing a ground up restoration and my frame is bent a little so i need to drill out some of the rivets and i might paint my frame black and the sping hangers like yours and if that guy does shipping i will get them done by him and i have a question i am going to put 31x10s on my truck and would there be any use in getting that stuff powder coated becuase would you be able to see them
