i was told to get this kit cause the poppers won't rust... someoen told me the autoloc kits are junk and the poppers rust out... so any opinions before i dump the money. i have an account with hoffman to get the autoloc kits at dealer but i'd rather get the best i can for my money i don't wanna do something twice...
lemme know what you think.

I've been having a nose too. There are several companies where u can build your own. I've been lookin at customclassics for a alarm, start disable and emergency pull (911 cable) in case battery goes flat. Upgrade the solenoids 'cos the truck doors are pretty heavy!

how heavy solenoids do you need to go?
-
I've just ordered a kit from "mypushcart" on ebay. he's a power seller, knows his stuff and cheaper than customclassics! I think I opted for the 45lb rather than the 30lb just in case!! Bearing in mind the shipping cost is $45 the actual kit with alarm and 911 cable was $160 appx. That was by far the cheapest.
-
30lb minimum. You actually can make a kit on your own with door lock solenoids.
-
I was gonna get a cheap central locking system and convert it to pull the catch rod rather than the lock rod but the kit comes with all the wires, relays etc and an alarm. better safe than sorry ;)
-
anyone got a how to on the make your own kit? i want some decent solenoids that won't rust out..
-
Easy. Go to a salvage yard remove the door lock solenoids and wiring from a donor vehicle, they say the earlier 80 down solenoids are stronger, but they are larger. Mount the solenoid in the door so it will pull up on the exterior handle (you can run a pulley so you can mount it below if you have to) and use some crimp wire to connect it to the latch, run the wiring and connect it to a push button.
There really isn't anything "special" about the kits other than what Bitzer! pointed out, everything is there.
-
So far so good. Just have to finish the filler work then onto the next one!
-
Assuming you have your "poppers" in there, right? At least, before you do the last one.
-
I've got the catch pin out on one door so it wont lock lol ;) the only thing i'm missing is time :(

ha ha ha ha ha you can hear my dulset tones!! cheers for posting that bud- I know where to come next time ;)
-
Hey guys where's the best spot to mount the poppers?
-
I used the rubber hole at the bottom of the "B" pillar. It works fine as long as you don't wind it out too far and distort the bottom of the door ;)

Ha ha, forgive my stupidity, but what's the "B pillar"?
-
Dont worry - we all have to start somewhere!!
Working from the front, the "A" pillar is the upright that holds the windscreen, The "B" pillar is the middle upright where the door catch is bolted to and the "C" pillar is the back one if you have a crewcab.
Hope this helps, it makes a change for me to answer sensibly to a question ;D

Thanks. Okay now I have another question. If I mount it there do I have to have some kinda pulley or something or is there a way to work a straight pull?
-
Hey so you mount the popper in the hole not the solenoid it goes in the door to pull on the latch the closer to the latch the better

Right right. Okay but if it's in that hole how is it gonna pop the door open? The hole on mine comes out the side of the door about a foot or two under the latch. Also, I guess I got confused earlier, where did you guys mount the solenoids for a good pull?
-
ok guys this is how I done it. remove the interior door handle but leave the pull rod connected to the door catch. cut out a 4" square from the door skin and weld a flat plat behind it. Fix solenoid to flat plate. the reason I located it there was the solenoid will pull the same way as original. cut pull rod to length and with a pair of pliers bend the rod over and attach to solenoid. try and make it a tight fit or the solenoid will only pull the slack.
the popper was fitted in the rubber door stop hole. drill out to accomodate and fix in place. 1st time wind the popper all the way in and test. adjust to fit/meet door when the door is closed. ensure the popper is int too far out as when you close the door it will push the bottom out.
hope this helps guys :)

SO then you can only open it with a remote, even from the inside?
-
in the kit from mypushcart @ ebay it comes with 2x electric push buttons for the inside. Only advice- keep both buttons near the driver. It stops the passenger "popping" the door as you travel!!

Interesting. Do you have pics of your door, where everything is mounted?
-
sorry the only pics i got are in the video

The next best thing to an ejection seat ;D

It only crossed my mind when a buddy and me were looking for locating places!!

I planned on shaving the doors on my pickup... I just planned on using starter actuators to pull the rod. They seem to be plenty strong...
I haven't found any poppers yet, but thats next up.
As for entry, I plan on either wiring up an aftermarket alarm system and using the remote to open the doors,,,, or leaving the locks in and using a flush mount rubber button between the cab and the bed. I've found that the rear hatch buttons from a dodge caravan are perfect, but have yet to find the part number... even though I work for dodge.
-
Is there any way to do this without hacking up the inside of the door or chopping off the inside handle? I believe Chris mentioned pulleys. Where could I get a set of these?
-
I don't know where to get the pulleys, I would think any tool shop should have something...
I installed them on my 73 and mounted the solenoid in the door pillar above the latch and I used the existing interior handle.

Okay, yeah I think I know where you're talking about. I'll have to take a look next time I pop off the panel.
-
Seems kinda awkward, you no longer have an outside handle to grab on to and pull the door open. I guess you just kinda grab the lip of the door now? Looks pretty cool other than having to get used to that part.

Actually there is a popper in the door that opens it partway...
