Hi All, I have an 84 Chevy 1/2 ton shortbox 2wd with the 4sp man with the granny gear and a 3.42 rear end. Originally came with a 250 I-6 but I recently swapped in a 327. Needless to say my mpg sux. I am also one of those guys who is too lazy to shift. I am very interested in swapping in a 700r4 and need your advice on what is required to do this. I'm assuming i'll need to relocate the crossmember and get a trans cooler to start with. Other than that I have no idea what I'm getting into with this swap. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Few things that come to my mind.
(1) You need a 700R4 that is not computer controlled.
(2) You will need the yoke for the 700R4
(3) You will need an automatic radiator. Not a good idea to only run and aftermarket cooler. Should run through a stock one first
(4) Move the cross member as you already mentioned.
(5) Will need the throttle cable bracket with the TV cable bracket.
(6) Need a TV cable.

That's a good start
add to the list:
7) A brake light switch out of a 700r4 equipped truck (for the converter lockup)
8) the vacuum switch for converter lockup
9) the transmission electrical plug and about 25' of #14 wire
10) some junkyard transmission steel lines for the rad and cooler
11) A 9/16 crowsfoot to get those lines on/off
12) an angle drill to drill the upper holes in the frame if not so equipped (mine wern't)

I see on the corvettes they have an adapter for a 700r4 to extend the reach to tranny about 6" may be cheap enough to change without moveing the transmission crossmember or if ya have a welder u cold prob make one Bruce..

where can i find a electrical to mechanical speedo converter for a swap like this?

I'm going to be doing the same kind of swap. Only I'm swapping out a 700R4. Will I need to get a different length drive shaft?

Why do you need an electrical to mechanical converter? For the Speedo? It should just be a matter of swapping out the VSS for a mechanical drive.
