Title: Electronic control box for E transmissions
Post by: HAULIN IT on November 06, 2008, 09:13:49 am
Anyone have a 4L60 or 80 E in their truck? Who's controller are you using...just looking for opinions on a stand alone type.  Thanks, Lorne

I have one in my 1991 CrewCab.  The ECM controls it and the TBI.  What are you looking for.  P30? Vans had a controller in them that some people have modified...

Chris, My transmission buddy suggested we try an electronic, I've seen companies that make a  programable set-up to alter shift points, lock-up, ect. that you would plug in a laptop or some pre-determined "program 1" & "program 2" or something like that. Just wondering if anyone has first hand experience with a certain company & their thoughts. Lorne

They do have programmable E's, but the good one cost $2500.  The only stuff I have experience with it the 99-up LS motors that we turbocharge and tune...
There are a few that have stand alone PCM's but they are expensive also...

Here's one.  HGM Compushift (http://www.compushift.com/products/compushift)  Can't vouch for it, but it looks nice.

Wow, they came down to about $1200.  That is the one I am talking about.  For the money it is the best you can get.

Yes, That's exactly what I was looking at. There are several others out there too, most use your laptop though.
Chris, On a side note, Is your brother locking up his converter during a dragstrip pass?
Thanks Guys! Anyone else have any input? Lorne

No he is not locking the converter. he is making to much power and has gone through 5 4L60E's, so it would break it.  If/when he gets an 80 he is going to lock it.

Chris, What is he breaking/burning up on the 4L60's?

I have the 4L80E in my '91 GMC, but she's all stock.

well the first 1 broke with factory setup.
The second one burnt up after the turbo.
3rd one broke the input shaft
4th one burnt up the pump.
5th one just got installed.

Truck is making 535hp and 703lb/ft at the rear wheels.  He hopes the trans will last for Pink all out next weekend.

You mean a 4L60E can't stand up to a pathetic 850+ flywheel ft/lbs.  Jeez they are weak.  :P

Yeah I know.  That is what I was saying.

I convinced him to dump Finishline, the input shaft that broke was because they didn't put a hardened on it.  He raised cane, but they still charged him (in my opinion) way to much to fix it, of course this was after they recived it..  My opinion was they should have ate all the expense on that one...

We found a supplier for 80 parts locally so hopefully he will go that route.

Chris, It's good to know what is breaking,Thanks. I've seen/heard inputs & outputs (they are the ugly ones it appears). We were told back in '95 when we put the 700 in behind the stock Olds...."It'll never live", it did for several years of daily use & occasional beating. Then when I put it back together a few years ago planning to race it some..."It'll NEVER live". 77 passes & 15,000 or so miles.... I really don't think about much anymore ;) I know someday it's likely going to break something, anything beat on long enough gives up & when it was really never designed to, your odds are worse. What is funny to me is, my transmission friend is changing the drum on the input shaft (twisting the spine in the drum) in stock vehicle allot. (that's how I get the free, S-10 torque converters, the warranty companies give him a new one when he does the drum job & I get the old one) :D He has it figured which years of drums to avoid based on what year vehicles started having that problem. Did your brother's input snap or strip the drum? I'm assuming the pump went out with it that time also, what else, do you know?
Vile & Tusk, That's what I've been pondering "Who's do you want?" I really don't have good faith in TCI components, but have never used any electrical items from them. That's why I was hoping to find a few guys who have one & are using them, Thanks. Lorne

I've never used TCI's standalone computers but I've never heard anything bad about them either. I build all my own transmissions and I had planned on building a 4L80E but the 6L80 is a better choice and will fall into my hands sooner or later so I'll wait til then to investigate a good standalone that I can vouch for it's quality.

Here is a list in order of occurance after the turbo.  ( he is sitting right here.. )
#1)burnt the clutches up
#2)snapped the input shaft in two
#3)shattered the pump.

Clutch burn up = either too much clutch pack clearance or lack of holding pressure. Coulda been his pump causing all of the problems since it grenaded. Was he running a 13 vane hardened pump? They make a lot of must have upgrades for the 700r4/4L60. Input shaft & drum, reaction sunshell, pump, servo, clutches & band, reprogramming kits by transgo are pretty good. Those are a few items I would go aftermarket during a heavy duty overhaul.

I know you asked about electronic controllers, but this is just another choice.  I believe TransGo makes a full manual shift kit for the 80E trans.  Somebody suggested it to me when I was considering using one in a swap project.

#1 happened on a FLT Level2 trans, it lasted about 9 months of weekend drag racing behind 560 torque. (stock pump)

#2 happened on a FLT Level4 trans, it had 13 vane pump,  FLT doesn't put a hardened shaft in it.  He wasn't racing it during this time.(700 torque and 6.0L)

#3 happened on a FLT Level4 trans (same as above) but the cause was an unshimmmed torque converter..

BTW, all of these were dyno'd before sending them out.
