Sectioned Front Bumper
« on: February 06, 2009, 07:32:13 am »
I was wanting to narrow my front bumper, do away with the lisence plate area and the mounting bolts. Has any one on here done this or know someone who has. I know that I need two bumpers to get rid of the lisence plate but what about the mounting bolts? If you weld them in will they be strong enough to tigthen up the bolts without breaking? Also I wonder if you had it rechromed how it would look. Any info on this would be great. Thanks.

I've not done this but from what I have seen done was to put the bolts in the holes weld them to the inside and gound off the heads flush on the front as far as tightning themjust tight not tourqued or I'm sure you could twist them out. Why not try a front rollpan? The one Vile has on the pink truck looks sweet.

I like the front rollpans but I like to modify things and keep them as stock looking as possible. I know this is gonna sound crazy but I like to put extra work into stuff so most people dont notice anything has been done(unless they are into these trucks).

What i seen you could take your bumper and leave it on the truckmaybe remove like a inch on each side, take the front bumper off, cut the 1 inch and then bolt it back on, and tack weld the corners so see how it looks.Plus get another bumper from the same year, cut a section out just enough to replace the license plate section and do alot of measurements and cut it out and weld in your replacement section and smooth it all out.If your planning on having a chrome shop re chrome it is to get it as smooth as you can and they will fill the rest in and by the time there done it should look like a brand new bumper.I like these little things you can do to a vehicle it makes it look cool doing some oddball things.I`m planning on putting chrysler 300/dodge magnum door handles in place of the stock ones and using the sheetmetal around it and mold it all in, should look cool when i`m done.

thanks

Are you going to put the chrysler 300 handles in the same location as your stock handles? Will they fit ,is there enough room in that area of the door for them? Reason I ask is I was going to put the handles from my 94 s-10(they are square and flush mounted) on my truck but there was not enough room inside the door in the stock location. I could have put them below the body line where the door is thicker but I didnt want to put it that far down. If your handles fit in that area let me know or if you find some that do let me know.  I would still like to do it if I could find a handle that would fit. BTW I like the way you think when you finish those handles they will look stock and most people wont notice it.

What i plan on doing is using the door handles and the surrounding metal right where the original door handle sits and use the rods from the chrysler 300 and modify them to accept the truck door latch assembly.I`m gonna also get rid of the door locks and just use the 1 on the drivers door. I read awhile back someone had a 67 camaro and used pt cruiser door handles and the metal and molded it into the doors of the camaro. It looked sharp and since my truck is far from original i`m gonna do this modification.I got a place that is asking for how much metal do i need and the price for the handles and the sections from the doors from a junk donar car they got.

thanks

lmao
about the welding the bumper bolts and grounding them off the chrome shops suggest you leave the heads on and let them ground them off cause they usually have to go back fill in and re grind anyway.

Did this on an 80 Elcamino once. Did not re chrome though. Painted it to match the body. I replaced the factory bolts with grade 8 carriage bolts. Tack welded them from the outside. Removed the bumper, solid welded them inside, ground the head off, solid welded them outside, then ground them smooth. ground the whole bumper down, primed it with urethane primer. blocked it, primed it, wet sanded and painted.
