What do you think of this kit:

It's an unassembled 4 bolt 400 block .060 over unassembled short block kit.   Only thing I'm leary of is the .060 over bore.  Do you think this is too much?


SHORT BLOCK KIT Includes: for $1435.50   
    

*BLOCK - Small block Chevy factory 4 bolt 400 block. Bored to .060", finished honed, dry decked, line honed, hot tanked. Blocks are painted inside with Rustoleum, outside of block is painter with your choice of factory colors. Blocks are fitted with new cam bearings and brass freeze plugs.

CRANKSHAFT - 400 - 3.750" stroke cast crankshaft custom ground on rod and main journals. Micro polished with oil holes chamfered.

RODS - Factory 400 - 5.565" forged rods that have been shot-peened, resized, fitted with new chrome moly rods bolts for maximum strength.

PISTONS - NEW! Federal Mogul Hypereutectic flat-top or dished pistons. Available in the following compression ratio:
Dish Top Piston:
Apx 10.2 w/64cc head
Apx 9.8 w/68cc head
Apx 9.5 w/72cc head
Apx 9.1 w/76cc head
Flat Top Piston:
Apx 10.9 w/64cc head
Apx 10.5 w/68cc head
Apx 10.1 w/72cc head
Apx 9.7 w/76cc head
RINGS - New Moly faced top comp. ring w/premium stainless oil ring.

BEARINGS - New Clevite M77 Tri-metal bearings to match crankshaft.

CAMSHAFT - Available separately.

TIMING - New Your choice of a P.A.W. double roller timing chain set for flat tappet camshaft or a heavy duty single roller for factory style hydraulic camshaft.

BALANCED - Assembly custom balanced with pistons fitted to rods.

* Must be used with cylinder heads with steam holes.


This would beat the pants off a GM 350 short block for around the same price.

Personally, I'd pass. IMHO, that .060 overbore is too much. Next rebuild, you'll have to sleeve the cylinders. I'd look through the local Craigslist/Junkyards/etc. and find a builder 400 and build it yourself. Or, you could build a 383 out of your 350. Budget priced 383 rotating assemblies can be had for ~$700. I have both and the 383 is heads and shoulders above a 350.

I found what I think is a cool 406 build...huge torque and good low end...perfect for a truck.  Basic ingredients:

400 bored .030 over
vortec heads
edelbrock performer RPM air gap intake
comp cams 280H cam
deep dish pistons to keep compression reasonable
makes 471 ft-lb all the way down at 2300 RPM...peak of 525 ft-lb at 3500 RPM and peak hp of 428 at 5500.  I was impressed.

'84 Sierra 3/4 ton.  4 on the floor, 4 wheel drive, upgraded to FM radio and steelhorse seat.  383 stroker under the hood - 430 hp 440 ft-lb.  custom rust holes in the bed and both rockers and cab corners.

Well, what do yall think of this one?  it's a (330hp / 385ft.lbs.)  350ci  turnkey.  everything, from air cleaner to pan to starter to serpintine setup to ac compressor.  I found it for around $4700 or less at the chevy dealer.

I figure with this setup, The final total would be around $5,300 complete.  That's for taxes and all the little things a new engine requires, mounts, hoses, oil, cleaners, etc.

that'd be awesome!  it would also cost about the same overall as the 350 I put above^^ 

I looked throught their store and found this one, same price but 40hp and 5ft.lbs more.

That one would end up about the same price, all finished, even with the gm serpintine setup.

I'd be kind of an idiot not to get one of these if they are as good as they sound.  It runs on premium gas, but that's fine, my old mustang only took premium and I drove it around for years daily.

Here's one from the same place that's even better.  It would be fairly unique for a while.  408 stroker from a 350 block.  4.03x4.00 bore/stroke.  500+ft.lbs. would move the old truck around nicely.

That's almost identical to my 383 spec wise. This one has a little bigger cam, though. I believe you'd be *very* happy with that motor.
