Dropping a 454 in my 1980 K-10
« on: February 04, 2009, 09:03:57 pm »
Well, Taxes are all done and now its time to stimulate the economy.  I found a guy with a rebuilt... supposedly 454 engine that he wants to sell, actually his wife told him to sell so he has no choice in the matter.  Anyway, I will be picking it up on Saturday.  I am going to take it home, give it a bath, and pull it right back apart and make sure its all good inside, probably with another rebuild done by me so I know for sure its been done.  I do have a few questions before I get started.

1. Will the SBC alternator work on the 454?
2. Will I encounter any fitment issues bolting the 454 up to the TH350 using an O'reilly GM350 converter(stock reman one)?  I know the pattern is the same, just want to make sure that the crank doesn't hang out too far or anything.
3. About what lift is stock for an 86 1 ton 454 with an auto?  This one has like a 535 lift cam in it now and I'm worried that will eat my trans way too fast, so I have no problem getting a different cam if need be.

1) yes, the mount won't
2) there is nothing different mounting wise except a 454 uses a different flexplate
3) cam lift?  Small.  The cam won't eat your trans, you right foot will.
