You don't know if you want shorties or longtubes. I would use shorties only if ground clearance were going to be a problem. Other than that, I think long tube have a clear performance advantage if you select an appropriate primary diameter/lenth and collector length.
I want long tubes. I have good memories of when I had large tube headers and small tube headers on this truck.
(Wish I had a better picture but at this time I don't)

1971 3/4 Ton Chevy Pickup - 402 BBC - Turbo 400 Shortshaft - Divorced 2-Ton Military T-case - 4:11's with Detroit Lockers F&R - 44" Super Swampers - 16.5 Slotted Mags
(Wanted: wide 8 bolt slotted mags)I'm trying to poor-boy this 454 into my Jimmy but do a decent job at the same time so I've been searching eBay and CraigsList for a few upgrades. I pulled the exhaust manifolds off my used 454 tonight and one of the exhaust passages looks to have a problem. I'll post a picture in a few minutes and then everyone can tell me I need to have the heads rebuilt.

My truck isn't a race-truck, just a pavement pounder, weekend toy for my son and I. I've owned 4 full convertible Blazers with small blocks and a 1971 3/4 ton Chevy 4x4 with a 402 Big Block, (daily driver for 12 years) and so I have a pretty good feel for the available torque provided by having a big block as compared to a small block and I like it. (Sorry Al). Even when both engines are stock. So I'm in the process right now of getting the engine ready to go in and a part of this process is I'll need some headers and I'm looking for a balance of what will fit, what it will cost and the value it will add and this has led me to do some searching on eBay and CraigsList to meet these criteria versus purchasing brand new. I like the idea of purchasing brand new but alas that's not in my budget and again, it's not a show truck or a race truck, just a weekend pavement pounder and once in a while off-road rig. I also pull a boat so a little power for the hills never hurts.

There's a set of Hooker Super Comp BBC Headers locally for $300.00, never run, only used for mock-up.
More than I want to spend but probably some very nice headers if they'll fit.
