Tailgate window safty switch
« on: May 31, 2007, 04:22:16 pm »
Does anyone know where the rear tailgate window switch is that stops the  tailgate window from going up or down when the tailgate is open? This is on a 79 Suburban.
Also, is there any adjustment to it? I really have to slam the gate closed harder than I would like too
Thanks in advance.....

I believe it is inside the tailgate. It is a roller that is in the center of the tailgate and it rides against the glass. I had a problem with mind when I got it. I took the window out and when I put it back together everything worked fine.

All that roller is for is a safety lock out for the inside handle. When the window is in the up position the wheel, being spring loaded, flips under the bottom channel of the glass and a tongue at the left end blocks the handles mechanism from moving to open the tailgate. I found this out last November when my back glass exploded on me and I had to replace it.
As for the location of the safety lockout switch, it's bolted to the passengers side latch assembly inside the tailgate. As to wether or not there is any adjustment to it or not I don't know. Maybe this summer when it warms up outside again I'll tear back into it and find out since I too have to slam the tail gate to get it to close enough to roll the window up

i have an '88 and its mounted in the hatch, i think on the driver side,  there is no adjustment to it that i know of, but its commen for the wiring to it to break from opening and closing the hatch. i just bypassed it and now i just make sure the window is all the way down before i poen or close it.

As I stated above..."As for the location of the safety lockout switch, it's bolted to the passengers side latch assembly inside the tailgate." With the tailgate open, place a screwdriver into the passenger side latch (acting as the striker mounted on the body) and push down to close the latch. Now you will be able to operate the window to move it in\out of the tailgate. To reopen the latch simply pull on the handle and the latch, being spring loaded, will simply pop back open.  The switch thats mounted in the jamb is just a dome light switch and its on the passengers side as well.
