exhaust from jc whitney catalog

any opinions on the all in one dual exhaust setups sold by jc whitney?
or would a traditional exhaust shop be a better option price wise?

Did you check out this one?

I don't see how a shop could match that price for a custom X-pipe dual exhaust.  Even if they could you still wouldn't have mandrel-bent pipes.  My guess is that it will require a little reworking to get a perfect fit, like all things do.  But as soon as the emissions test requirement sunsets on my year model, I'm gonna rip my single exhaust and cat off and replace it with that one.

If you have headers and a long bed they practically just bolt up.  Short beds require cutting them down to fit the length, but still fairly easy.  (Two Wheel Drive only..)

I'm hoping to get that system when I do my engine.  Sounds like an excellent price, considering it's an x-pipe and made out of stainless.  Plus there's not many bolt up systems for these old trucks anymore. so this is just what I need.

Around here true duals (no X or H pipe) made from aluminized steel costs $500+ without mufflers.  kind of a no brainer since the aluminized will be rusty in a couple of months.

Hey capt, what's the shipping on that setup, just a ballpark, if it changes around on ya.

I used a muffler shop last time I put an exhaust system on my truck.  I had a summit kit years ago and it only lasted a couple years, but I live in maine and salt is hard on everything here.  The muffler shop did a custom 2 1/2 true dual exhaust system and that's been on the truck for about 8 years now and is still pretty solid - it outlasted one set of headman headers so far.  I think I got thicker pipe and a better fit by going with the shop vs the kit.  Yeah it costs a little more money up front but it last a lot longer too if you get better materials from a reputable shop.  Also, being a 2 1/2" dual exhaust I figured the non-mandrel bent pipe wouldn't restrict flow enough to make a difference on a small block that only spins 5500.  My opinion is go with the shop if you know of a good one.

hey capt:
still saving to put a good cost effective dual exhaust on my 87 2wd short fleet.

concerning the 73 - 87 X-Pipe Stainless Exhaust for $359.00 on your site
am i correct in understanding the mufflers are extra? which choice would be the quietest?

you also had mentioned that some cutting will need to be done for a short bed, what in particular and how involved/difficult is it, any welding etc.?

thanks

This is the installation instructions.  LWB is longer than a SWB by 14" so you have to remove some off the back to make it fit, it should clamp back together, but I weld all my exhaust.

There is no mufflers with the kit, but the quietest one is the street version.

thanks capt-

this is a project that i would have to bring to my mechanic as it is beyond what i can do alone in my driveway, that being said specifically what modifications will need to be done for this to fit on a short wheel base 2WD fleet. i see four (4) cut scenarios and would like to know in advance which ones i am likely to encounter.

specifics
------------
87 short fleet 2WD with stock 305 and exhaust

i will consider adding headers but have not chosen them yet.
what is the reason for the collector/reducer, only for non header use?
in either case i am assuming some welding is needed here correct?

to make things easier i would also order the quietest muffler option with the exhaust, is this already pieced together or is assembly required by me

it is important that i know what kind of cut and weld fabrication i will be likely to encounter in advance being that my mechanic will be charging for any fabricating services. i like the exhaust but i really need to keep this as simple and cost effective as possible. have any other members installed this on a 2wd short fleet?

thanks

The kit was designed to be clamped together so the only welding required would be if you chose to add headers.  If it was a Long wheel base, it would clamp together completely.  You will have to use your own down tubes or have some made.  The cutting required would be at the back where the rear tubes connect.  If you cut them they will still slip into the muffler.  If you have narrower down tubes you would have to cut them where the tubes go into the X pipe as stated on the instructions.

I have sold a number of these kit and they are only designed for 2WD trucks, the bed style has no bearing on it.

still learning and trying to familiarize myself with the terminology...

"You will have to use your own down tubes or have some made"
>when you refer to downtubes do you mean the very last exit pipe after the muffler,
if this is not included are they expensive?

"The cutting required would be at the back where the rear tubes connect.  If you cut them they will still slip into the muffler"
>i am guessing that for the short bed the cutting would occur along the section with the penciled in 21" (back pipe)

"If you have narrower down tubes you would have to cut them where the tubes go into the X pipe as stated on the instructions"
>just need further clarification on downtubes ?

is there a side or rear exit option or just one choice?
thanks

"downtubes" refers to the the pipe at the manifold. This is a system for long tube headers, if your using shorties or stock manifolds then you'll need to fab the gap from this system to the exit.

Downtubes as CCZ145A stated are the tubes that connect to your manifolds and go down at the beginning of the exhaust.  I don't know how much they would be locally though

Yes it would be cut at the rear section of the back pipe.

There is only one configuration of the kits we sell and that is a the rear side exit as pictured.
