700r4 trans from a camaro or newer truck?
« on: April 16, 2009, 05:08:37 pm »
hi,i'm trying to find a 700r4 trans for my 86 chevy with a 350 crate motor from year one. i want to know if i can use a newer 700r4 as it seems to be the most readily available, and for a decent price. the guy that is selling says its from a 88-93 chev 2wd 5.7L. i'm using it in a 2wd as well. i want to have as little issues as possible. also, is the driveshaft for a 700 is a different length than one with a 350trans? also, are 700r4's from camaro's easily usable as well. thanks

All the 700R4 (4L60) trans are interchangeable.  I have one from a 90 Camaro in my 78 Jimmy.  If you currently have a TH350, the trans crossmember will need to move back and the driveshaft is shorter.  Andything from 88-93 are good with all the upgrades.

ok, good to hear. by move back, do you mean i have to drill new holes and move the crossmember back, or are they welded in, (i haven't been underneath the truck in a while.) i also have been told i need a different column to make sure i can get my 1low gear. and the cluster that shows OD as well. i guess while i'm at it, the truck is american in MPH, and i am in canada, so is it a direct swap for the entire gauge cluster to kph, or will it need to be recalibrated? is there any special linkage or anything i will need to make it work with my holley carb? sorry for all the questions, i want to be driving this truck this summer, if at all possible, as i miss driving it!

The transmission crossmember is bolted in.  And I bet the holes are already there, as my 1985 model came factory equipped with a 700R4.

82-87's should already have the holes in the frame. 73-81's won't.

ok, thats some good news! i've been reading other posts from others that have done the same thing, and have read about the vacuum switch thing, and a brake cancel switch. how hard is it to install these, and does anyone have pics? i have basically no knowledge of transmissions, as i'm an apprentice in a shop and haven't gotten that far yet. :-[. anyway, i just want to get an idea if this is something that can be done easily, as i don't want to burn up my transmission. thanks again

ShortChevy, The answers to a couple of your questions...I have no problems with the '85 original steering column going to low (mine was a TH350). You will need a couple brackets for your Holley to work correctly. A TV cable bracket & a corrector link (for the cable end to hook to), this makes the distance of the pull correct as the throttle is opened. Lorne
