Saddle Interior Paint for 77??
« on: April 23, 2009, 09:11:33 am »
My 77 stepside has factory saddle interior. Has anyone found the true rattle can color match and used it with good results? I am considering painting/dyeing the interior black until I hear from someone who has matched this factory color. Only need to do door panels because the dash and visors are mint. Was considering getting aftermarket door panels until I talked to a guy who bought 3 sets from different companies for his 75 and he said every set was thinner plastic and junk. Most pictures of panels in catalogs and on the net do not look exactly like mine either. Not naming companies for obvious reasons.  A couple of pictures of a panel are in my Picasa web album. http://picasaweb.google.com/mtnriderlinc/77ChevyStepsideProject#
Any and all advice welcome!!

If you plan to paint anything in the interior as far as plastic goes, you should paint everything together to get them to match.  As old as these are, even if you got the correct color it would still be wrong as these things fade over time.
Your panels look good in my opinion I would just paint them.  You can get a paint shop to custom match what you "want" it to be, but trust me, you are going to have to paint all of it.

There are only 2 companies that make replacement panels: Palco (Dashtop) and Coverlay.
ALL Palco panels are black and are painted to what color they use.  They are the only place that makes a panel that will accept factory pieces, but they are crap in my opinion
Coverlay (the only one I will sell) uses a thicker ABS plastic, but you cannot use the factory trim on them, they are replacement only panels.

If you want the factory look with the trim, you ONLY option (in my opinion) is to use what you got or find some in a salvage yard.  I have access to both kinds, but only Coverlay will be listed as I would actually use them on one of my trucks.

thanks, I am moving forward with doing everything black with the same paint. You are right, the panels are in pretty good shape. What doesn't show is the upper part has been worn smooth from hanging the arm out the window. I plan to sand the entire top smooth on both panels  and I think they will look fine. Highly doubtful I could restore the texture without it looking bad. I have tried that fabric/plastic repair product on a boat seat rip and the result was not good. Not at all the "as seen on tv" results. LOL
