Setting up a rebuilt Q-Jet
« on: June 08, 2009, 10:14:24 am »
Hey guys....I need a liitle help on setting up a Q-Jet.  I'm working on my 1980 C10 w/350.  I have a professionally rebuilt quadrajet that I installed.  My question is regarding the initial setting of the mixture screws and idle adjustment.  From what I've read, I should start with the two adjustment screws turned all the way in and then backed out 2 full turns.  I did that, but the idle is way too low.  There is an adjustment screw near the throttle linkage that apparently can be used to put pressure on the linkage to raise the idle....sorta likeholding the gas pedal in a little bit.  What's the screw called?  Should I have it backed all the way out while I'm adjusting the mixture screws or should I be using it to raise the idle a little bit to keep it from dying?  If I start with the mixture screws backed out 2 fulls turns and I the idle adjustment screw backed all the way out, the idle is too low for the truck to stay running.  I realize that I have to adjust the mixture screws until I get the highest rpm at idle, but my question is what position should the idle adjustment screw on the throttle linkage be in?

Thanks,

T.J.

TJ, The screw on the linkage is used to do like you say "hold the throttle open a little bit". Depending on the engine, a different amount of "open" may be required, use that screw to keep it running. It will be several turns in (the actual amount is not important) to keep the engine running at a nice speed. Go back & turn each of the mixture screws in a bit/out a bit. You want to work the mixture screws & idle stop screw together a little at a time until the best is achieved. Hope this helps, Lorne
