Thick or thin front seal oil pan gasket?
« on: July 05, 2009, 12:42:57 pm »
I am going to have my leaky oil pan gasket fixed this week. I want the blue 1 piece Fel-pro oil pan gasket but they make a thin or a thick front seal type. The thin is driver-side dipstick only and the thick is either. I have a driver-side dipstick. How am I to know if I need a thin or a thick gasket? Thanks.

Not sure how to tell, but I can tell you it is dependent on the oil pan, not the timing cover.  This is the one I used on my Goodwrench engine: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FEL-OS34510T/ (it is a thick front seal).  I got it at AutoZone for about $5 less than Summit's price after tax.

Oh, on the oil pan, eh? Interesting. The one that is on it appears to be a cheap, stamped chrome-plated Mr Gasket type of pan. I guess I could pick up both and my mechanical can figure it out from there, then return the one I don't need. Would be nice to avoid that hassle though. I know that when I bought the truck, the stock oil pan came with it (which I've since discarded) and this one started to leak a few months after. I suspect poor installation of the crappy typical multi-piece oil pan gasket that's on there.

I wish I could determine for sure, but I'm pretty sure it's either a Trans-dapt pan or Mr Gasket. Both brands are popular up here. It looks just like this TD one:

It also looks like this one too:
http://www.mr-gasket.com/ProductDetails.aspx?MajID=725&MinID=7251&productID=275&txtSearch=oil%20pan

But of course neither site doesn't say zip about whether they take thick or thin seals. How does one know?

Anybody else have info about how to determine which gasket is needed? I'd like to buy it today. Thanks.

Heyyyyyy, that's awesome. Thanks man! Since my pan is aftermarket, I'll get the thick one.
