Does my driveline angle seem wrong?
« on: August 14, 2009, 10:33:35 am »
My transmission points about parallel with the ground and the driveshaft slopes down to the differential.  No matter what I do with the pinion angle, the driveshaft will never be straight.  I'm not sure what the driveline should look like, but mine looks like it would bind the u-joints.  Here's a picture I made(I know my paint skills suck).

I don't know if this is normal, I just wanted to check while the truck is pulled apart so I could fix it.  I checked the angles a while back with a protractor - crank pulley was at 87* same with pinion...don't know if that tells you anything.

Are you getting any weird vibrations? I guess you already had a catastrophic failure with a u-joint and your driveshaft so you are wanting to make sure this is right, eh?

This is a neat resource for driveline stuff:  http://www.ringpinion.com/HowTo.aspx

This is a good article too: http://www.carcraft.com/howto/91758/index.html   So the diagram at the bottom of the arcticle is like how you describe? The rear end and the tranny are 'flat' and the u-joints are bent at each end? I think usually you can fairly easily shim the angle of the rear end up (see my new post in this section) to make that angle more inline. As for the trans though, you can probably fiddle around with that a little with the crossmember but perhaps not quite as much. Others might know more about this though than me.

the driveshaft will never be in the same plane as your pininion/diff.  The pinion and diff will be at the same angle (or close to it) at approx 3 degrees down on the tail and up on the pinion.
