ive got gauge problems... ugh.
« on: February 24, 2010, 02:31:05 am »
so i have a 78 sb k10 and the gauges all seem kinda f'd up... lol.  first thing is half of them dont work, including the gas gauge. but the speedo works fine so im no too annoyed. secondly, they only light up sometimes, they flicker and do some weird thing where the gauge lights will go out but then the blinker lights and bright indicators come on. they usally go back to normal if i just hit it or go over a bump. im thinking the connecter is loose or bad or something, anyone have any advise on the best way to get them all working and lit up? the truck came with a extra set of gauges but they are in rough shape, not sure worth swapping...

I'd check the connector that goes into the back of guage cluster. and if thats not it take a good look at the printed circuit on the back of the guage cluster.  I've seen some that have had burnt wires and that could cause some of the problems. the good thing is you said you had another cluster. if it came out of the about the same year of truck and has all the same guages i'd just sawp them. hope that helps.

hey small world im in utah too, holladay. small world, and yeah thats what i was figuring too, ill have to do it when ive got my tools. the other gauges are in really rough shape so im tring to avoid using them till i get some time to refurb them. but the first thing i want to fix is the gas gauge, i looked at the wires going from the tank, real quick just under the truck and i have a ground that goes straight to the frame and a blue one that is cut... thats all i saw. i looked at the wiring diagram on here and im a little confused, i think i says that the blue wire is suppost to be ground, but why to i have a black ground? and is the f/e thing on there the sending unit? is the pink wire visable without dropping the tank?.
