Where is the temp sender located?

trying to locate the sender that the gauge is connected to. Where is it located? what does it look like? pics anyone?

Not sure what you are working on but they are usually in the cylinder head. Could also be in the intake.

the one for your cluster is on the drivers upper engine area, below the valve cover, between the front and center exhaust ports in the head. now the one for the ecm is on the intake its the sensor the one on the head is the switch for the cluster

Yes, i forgot to mention that its an 87 tbi 305.
I will take a look at it when i get home. Previous owner installed an after market temp guage which i am trying to get rid of. I do not know if its the guage or the sender, so this helps out alot

on my '79 383 stroker..
b/w the two spark plugs on left side....
same place in my '91 5.7...

Thanks for the pics, helped out alot.
Wire is the same color too.
Ok, so i grounded the wire the gauge shot past 260 to about the 3 o'clock position, but when i disconnected the wire it did not go back.
Is the gauge faulty? Or is there suppose to be some kinda resistance on the wire so that it could go back?

OK, I am lost with this one. How is this suppose to work?
You have the sending unit connect the wire to ground and you have 14v to the terminal on the gauge
How can you test the gauger?
I put 12 volts to 1 terminal and ground to the other and the gauger pegs.
It would seem i need some kind of variable resistor in-line so voltage would not be full(14v)
maybe i am not understanding something

Ok, figured out my gauge was somewat faulty and had no temp sender.
Got new gauge and sender seems to be working properly, but does not go all the way to down to 100
Warm up the truck and goes to 190. Is this normal?

Thanks for the response.
Just to let everyone else know the way the guage works is
12 volts to the right terminal green wire coming from the sender is on the left side.
When you have have the sending unit connected there is little resistance and the guage will move a little.
12 volts will be at the guage, but should not peg the gauge.
The sending unit adds more resistance untill it becomes totaly shorted(overheated engine).
Only took me about a week to figure it out, but had tooo many faulty items..LOL
