sprag

So I'm just about to overhaul my post 1972 th400 and I want to upgrade to a 32 element sprag, I know I will need to change the direct drum to the pre 1972 style:

But will I also have to change the direct clutch housing?

my direct clutch house cam with a 8 element roller identical to a th350 DC.. the basic conversion wouldnt fit.. so i had to picked up a new one form PATC. their stock replacement  holds the same clutch pack as the stocker. you will need to swap the apply piston and return springs into the new clutch housing. along with new lip seals.

you will need externaly snap ring pliers, two 6" c-clamps. either the lip seal tools or some.025-.030" mig welding wire... haveing hte seals warm (hot shower warm) makes them pliyable and less liekly to get nicked on assembly... luybe eaverthing with a light coat of tranny fluid too.
i put the DC a 2x6 pieave of would nac clamped it to that.... only have to shove the reatining ring down boaut ~1/8"

becarefule of the return springs there ~10 of them, if the c-clamps slip off they will shoot every were  ;)

all in all its not a bad job. its pretty easy just take your time.
