GM's towing specifications?

Does anyone know the general towing capacity specified by GM for the mid-to-late 80s pickups? It seems common that 4x4s will tow less than the 4x2s.
My truck came with the factory hitch (I believe a Class IV) optional transmission cooler, optional 5.7 liter TBFI 350 and 4-speed auto. It also has the higher 3.08 rear axle ratio. Not sure if that info will help.
The sticker on the hitch that gives towing limits is extremely corroded and partially missing, so I can’t read the towing capacity for my truck.

It is not going to be much with that gear. You will need someone with a 1987 owners manual to consult. You should not use your OD when towing for sure. I had a 92 with that exact combo and I think it was rated for around 3000 lbs with my gearing but don't quote me on that.

Thanks, so 6,500 lbs? With a higher rear gear, maybe it would be safe to cut-back to just 6,000 lbs or less. I once hauled a pallet of sod grass (wet) in the bed, and noticed the truck was starting to act a little labored.

that 3:08, as mentioned, is tall for towing. You're gonna need some extra giddyup in that engine. My 91 suburban 4x4 3:73 w/ 4l80e trans will tow my nearly 7k lb 30' camper trailer with little problem keeping 70mph, except on the long hills. Going accross the blue ridge mountains, i drop it in low 2 to keep the rpms high. I never pull while in OD.
I don't know what else to tell ya. try it.
