headliner repair
« on: May 07, 2010, 03:58:27 am »
Done by someone who knows nothing of interior stuff but thought it might help some others get going on theirs too.  Only started the repair work won't get to recover until middle of next week

Little history here, the truck is from Vegas very clean outside, interior had seen better days.  When I took the headliner out the fabric and foam did not seperate nicely at all.  In fact it took big chunks of the fiberboard with it.  Which left me with areas that were uneven.  I talked to some folks they said get a new one, HA ya right lemme just order up a new headliner for a crew cab!  It was suggested to me to use duct tape.  It was also suggested to use drywall tape, and glue.

I went with the drywall tape and glue, I used the mesh kind it seemed lightest.  Had to fix one area above the visors.  In addition to the uneven spots I also had several cracks in the sides.  I sprayed the tape with glue and wrapped it all the way around the headliner, this really helped.  I then filled in and smoothed out the low spots, I won't know how well this worked till I cover it but it seems to have smoothed everything out pretty good.

Here are some pics

What I started with, its hard to see the low spots but they are lighter in color for the most part

This shows what I did around the visor area most of the tape is wrapped around to the backside and then I just took a razor and cut out the opening

Here it is mostly finished, the seemingly random bits are where the headliner was starting to, delaminate? for lack of a better term.  This seems like it is going to hold everything together nicely and hopefully it will be smooth enough to get a good looking headliner out of it!

I will post up next week to let everyone know how it turned out

I replaced the 1/4" thick foam on my headliner, with new. Glued it up with that 3M fabric glue, and then glued the new headliner to that. Still looking like new after 3 years.
