Dually rear end issues
« on: June 14, 2010, 10:13:23 pm »
I have a 1989 R3500. I just recently bought the truck. A couple weeks ago right after I bought it i noticed a rear wheel seal was leaking. Pulled axles and drums, and found the axle shafts had rust on them, and the bearings were all toast inside the drums. Gear lube looked OLD.Today i had the rear end jacked up, and trans in park. When I rotated the wheel left to right there was a clunking type noise in the rear end. Seemed like alot of slop from turning the wheel till the driveshaft moved. Also, I have a clunk when i put it in gear. Not sure if these were limited slip units, but only my right rear spins under slipping conditions.

Are these DANA 70? Is this noise normal? Should I be worried? I have a buddy who rebuilds rear ends on drag cars, so im sure he can take care of it. If i need to have it rebuilt, i'd like to get the parts for the job so my buddy can do it on a weekend when he's free.

The clunk is probably due to worn u-joints.  If you pull the cover we can determine whether it is a posi or open carrier, but i would guess its open.  A couple pictures would really help out, some of differential before and after pulling cover so we can identify what rear and what carrier etc.

my 14 bolt was a posi till it started doing the same thing you could turn the drive shaft about 1/2 then it would lock up same deal with turning the wheels sometimes only one would spin then the yoke would spin i think its screwed up when you can turn both wheels in different directions lol
