Replacing rear bed channel?
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:33:44 am »
I'm still considering doing the unthinkable and rebuilding my fleetside shortbox. The rear channel and rear 1/4's are cooked but I can get replacement panels. (I dont have the cake to buy a used rust free box) I'm just wondering how much work it is to replace the rear channel as it appears to be tied into the rear posts. Should I remove the bad 1/4's 1st to allow easier access to the channel? I kind of wanted to do one 1/4 at a time so I had one to compare

The boxes can run $800-$1200 for southern. I heard someone scored one for $600 nearby....the panels I was referring to are from Cross Canada auto parts. They are different then the ones   offers. The 1/4" repair panel covers the entire rear light, and from the bottom to above the beltline - approx. 24" in length. I havent ordered them yet, so I cant speak for the fit or quality. I've used other panels and they needed a bit of work...but this isnt going to be a show truck...I'll just be happy to have it on the road

I have to ask:  Did you check this site for your bed panels?  I just put in an upper wheel arch from this site and the fit was good ('83 fleetside bed).  Check this out, the price looks right:  http://store.73-87chevytrucks.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=7&Product_Code=0850-135-136&Category_Code=7387Beds

that looks like the identical piece. I'm concerned now, it doesnt look like it rolls right underneath like the original does. Presumably so they fit either the LWB or SWB boxes...?

I'm not at home to compare, but it looks right at a glance.  Would you be willing to post a pic pointing to the area in question?  Maybe you could pm chris and see if he can give you a reference of someone that has installed that piece.

If you are talking about the rear sill under the bed, you can see part of it behind the tailgate, they have slip on covers and full replacements for it. if the ends aint bad maybe cut and use the slip over and weld in place. As for corners, they have whole corners as posted above, lower sections only, and upper arches or complete arches.
