76 Delco AM Radio No Audio
« on: July 19, 2010, 04:18:10 pm »
Greetings all. I'm trying to hunt down a problem with my original 76 Delco AM radio in my C20. It will power on, and I can hear an audible "pop" when I turn the volume knob up, but there is no audio present. I took it out, board & capacitors looked good. I cleaned it up, lubed the tuner slides and tried another antenna and still have nothing. Any ideas on what else it could be? Thanks

Honestly you can pick up them for $5 at a swap meet.

I've been looking and I only see the AM/FM ones for a ton of money. I think most people chucked their AM radios long ago to put in tape decks in the 80's.

If anyone has a good souce for a working AM just drop me a line. Thanks!

Sunday I just sold my AM-FM mono radio for $25.  I have seen them cheaper...  Check with your local pick and pull, I have to believe their are still some out there.

Will do. I'll keep my eyes peeled. Its funny. I had a box of old Delcos I pulled over the years and sold them at a swap meet 4 years ago. Then I get this thing and don't have them. :(

I put my AM back in my 1985.  I will wait till it gets cooler before I tear into it and install the factory 4 speakers, wiring and the new AM-FM Stereo with the MP3 jack for my ipod.

I've got an AM radio out of my citation, will that work?

I dont know the site...  but there a place you can send your old knob radio off to and they'll totally upgrade everything in it to new specs...  it can even have a usb or cd changer control in it.   It upgrades everything except the looks, so itll still look period correct but be like a current new radio on the inside.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think the AM out of the Citation is the vertical one right? Stands up and its an odd size if I recall.

I found two good used ones online and I will keep mine for parts in case the glass lens, etc is broken on the others. I appreciate the help. The newer USB / iPod upgrades are slick, but I think for now I'm just going to stick with my geeky single speaker in the dash and go OEM. Maybe down the road I'll add a full stereo, but I'm trying to stay as original as possible.
