Think I've jumped on the Suburban bandwagon!
« on: August 18, 2010, 09:59:38 pm »
I think i'm officially hooked on suburbans..lol Well after alot of research trying to find good parts vehicle for my crew cab dually i came upon a nice looking 88 suburban and bought it..for parts. But after getting it home...got it driveable....i cant tear it up!! I love this thing! Ive had many 73-87 trucks but there is something about the burb i really like...but dunno what it is. I just wish it was 4wd. Allllthough....i did find a sweet 4wd suburban that i think is in pretty good shape for dirt cheap that just needs a trans like mine did...i just wish i had the money...lol I'm gonna try and get some better pics later of my burb..its a little cleaner now. These are pics from where i got it.

But now im not sure what i wanna do with my burb...do a little custom work to it or leave it stock. I usually dont leave ANYTHING stock...but i kinda like it this way....its all original

I forgot to ask my question i was gonna ask..lol anything i can do to stiffen the ride a little? It seems to have alot of body roll going around corners. I know its really heavy but i wasnt sure if there was a stiffer sway bar i could use or stiffer springs?

got bit by the 'burban bug did ya?
welcome to the club.  There are different sizes to sway bars.   you didn't mention if your's is a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton.  If it is a 1/2 ton, find some 3/4 ton thick sway bars.  Put new shocks in place.  If you want to do a lot of work, get some 3/4 ton leafs or coils, perhaps.

I don't notice much body roll in my 91 V2500 4x4 --of course it is a 3/4 ton.  And, I have air shocks in the rear for extra stiffness and adjustability.

I'd get a nice big front sway bar from a 3/4 ton and adding rear sway bar makes a world of difference, without making the ride harsh, like changing springs would.

Welcome to the club. I had a burb years ago and have regretted selling it almost daily, until i bought another one a couple of months ago. This one is gonna require a good bit of work to get back on the road, but it's all good.

Yours looks nice, not much I'd need to do to that one.

The big sway bar in front and installing one out back should tame the body roll a good bit.

Looks like a Tx tag on the front of yours, correct? If so, and you are seriously looking for a 4x4, I know where there is a 1 owner '85 4x4 w/4spd, running, tagged and inspected for sale right now for a good deal. I'd buy it myself if I hadn't already committed to mine.
There are two tools needed, duct tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD 40.

no its not lowered..although i have thought about lowering it. It is a 1/2 ton and does have air shocks on the back but i havent messed with them so i dont know what theyre set at. Thanks guys ill look into getting a 3/4 ton sway bar and new shocks and see where that gets me.

No psycho71..thats a missouri tag. Drove about 2 1/2 hours to get it and pulled it home on a car dolly with my ol' 1/2 ton ford..lol Thats was definately an interesting experience after almost losing the suburban off the dolly once and almost rear ending someone!

It still had r-12 so i converted it to 134 and now blows ice cold air which is perfect for our weather right now! Has a few minor cosmetic issues to deal with but nothing major.

I actually ran across another 88 3/4 ton 4wd thats in almost as good as shape as mine. Runs and drives but needs a new trans cause 2nd gear is out. I can get it dirt cheap but i dont have the cash right now otherwise i would! But im still keeping tabs on it in for when i get the cash. So hopefully that will be my next new addition to my growing family ;)

I have air shocks on one of my trucks. I set the airlines up to where I inflate each of them individually, that way the pressure doesn't transfer from one shock to the other when the load shifts. Just seemed to me that with a single port for both shocks, it would shift air pressure from the loaded side to the unloaded side. Don't know how much it helps, just food for thought. I have been known to overthink things.

that's a good idea Psycho...didn't think of that. Makes sense--the individual shock will keep pressure where it needs while turning and such.
