we don't get too many of those on the right coast.   I recall 7 or 8 years ago I was sitting on a dentist chair here in Richmond.  The dentist was at work with what they do best...drill holes in teeth.  All of the sudden the chair shook.  The dentist scolded the assistant for kicking the chair while he had a very, let's say, dangerous tool in his hand (and in my mouth!).   The assistant said, she didn't kick the chair.  He promptly turned the drill off, walked out into the hall and there was talk among other staff about a trimmer.  Over the radio they had over the speaker system, you know the soothing elevator music station to keep people from too much anxiety while getting their teeth yanked, they announced an earthquake was just experienced.  Come to find out the epicenter was about 20 west of us and if i recall it was around 3.xx on richter's scale.

that is my eq story (and a close call I might add).

take a vacation to L.A.
a buddy of mine out there says not a week goes by that they don't experience at least a small quake.  Only the bigger ones make the news out there.  I guess it is like wind blowing here....happens all the time.

3rd one I have experienced here in my life. It wasn't a big deal sounded like a really really loud furnace firing up, or an explosion off in the distance. I went outside expecting to see an orange glow in the sky. When I didn't see it, and the fact that it was sketchy quiet out I figured it must have been a small quake.

to actually hear it, you must've been pretty close to the epicenter i would think.

About 30 miles from it. I heard it before I felt it. Started out a low rumble, then kinda rolled on, and got louder. Shaking started about 4 or 5 seconds after the noise. We had one a couple months back but I was in the truck, and didn't feel that one. It was small too. like 2.8 or something.

i guess i would've heard the one around me if i wasn't in such a urban area...there are always trucks, buses, Amtrak (the north/south route within 1/2 mile of my house) whatever, making noises around here.  And, i was inside the dentist office.  That'd be awesome to hear it.
