dana44 vs corp 10
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:54:55 pm »
OK so here is my dilemma, last year i had my Dana44 diff pin break during plowing so i welded, and welded to lock it up, worked awesome in mud, horrible in snow, i have another 44 out back i thought had the same 3:73 gears, but they are 3:07s , no prob I'll just switch the carrier and use my ring and pinion, took mine apart, i have a bad pinion. i have no gears, 3:73 for a Dana44, now the 3/4 ton frame i bought has 3:73 . Ive been reading all week about the corp 10, what are your opinions? i measure the axles they are the same diameter, the small part(shear part) are the same, the only difference i can see is the spline count. 28vs30, the outers are the same. i even put my 44 spindles on this housing.  i do have a spare set of axles for both housings. should i worry about using the 10bolt? or should i be looking for new gears for my Dana44? i know in the rear the 10bolt with 35's will destroy the spider gears, i have a 12 bolt rear that seems to hold up fine.

I have plowed a good many storms with both 10 bolts, and 44's They both hold up just fine. My 86 has 228,000 miles on the original 10 bolt. It has had a plow on it since 1990ish.

In most respects the 44, and 10-bolt are dang near the same. The only real difference is that the 10-bolt has a larger bearing. I like the 10-bolt simply because I can get parts cheaper.

If you drive smart you can keep it together. Keep the axle open, don't jump on it to hard, and don't bind it up bad you'll be fine. This assuming you aren't trying to run super wide 36"+ tires.

I'd run the 10-bolt without a second thought. But I'd also be putting thought into upgrading my axles. If I broke one, odds are I'll do it again. A Full Floating 14-Bolt out back, and a Dana 60 in the front would be my goal. I'd rather upgrade and never have to worry then spend money on something I'm pushing the limits of.

Fun Fact- The 12-bolt isn't greatly stronger then the 10. Don't forget, the 10-bolt replaced the 12-bolt.

I am about to switch back to 10 bolt front & rear, to get a lower ratio from a parts truck, but when I switched my 44 in for the original 10 bolt front in my 82, I wanted to re-use my new brake rotors from the 10 bolt. I tried to swap the hubs with the rotors and realized that the 10 bolt had much bigger inner side wheel bearings than the d44. Otherwise they are pretty much six of 1, half a dozen of the other.

while i guess i can confirm that the 10 bolt does have a larger inner bearing. my Dana44 that i have been running , i guess has 10 bolts spindles. even funnier, my spare Dana44 i guess has 1 44spindle and 1 10 bolt spindle,  i took apart and was like what the heck is going on...... i now have the 10 bolt bolted into my truck with 10 bolt spindles(that i thought where 44) just need some bearings swapped out and can put the front brakes back on..
