to trade or not to trade?
« on: November 02, 2010, 02:35:29 pm »
i know a guy that has a 83 or 84 chevy 1/2 ton 4x4..has a 350 4 speed..lifted with 38s..body wise kinda rough but a good old truck and i have a good bed sitting at the house anyway..he said it even gets around 12 maybe 13 mpg if your easy on it..and my truck is a 94 s10 excab 4.3 auto 4x4..175000 miles but im the 2nd owner and it runs and drives just fine even the 4x4 works great..solid good looking truck but one cab corner is starting to rust..so id really like the other truck but not sure if it would be a good trade or how much boot i should ask for..i think he was asking 2500 for his

If it was me i'd trade.  But I don't really like S10's so....yeah. lol  Yours might be worth a little more though.  And also think if you will miss having things with the newer truck.  Working AC?  Maybe a smoother ride?  Might make a difference to you or maybe not.  Again to me I don't use AC or care much if one is a little smoother riding or not.  I'd take the trade.

How far do you drive to work???  You really need to factor in the fuel mileage.  If you don't drive far, take the trade...

Things about this
a I don’t think his 83 is getting 12mps with 38s im getting 8 if im easy on it unless his gearing is way low maybe but then it wont have no take off not good with 38s for anything
b 38s are pushing the 1/2tons limits even with 3/4 setup like I have im always braking something.
c my 94 c1500 gets about 16 granted your is 4x4 but still I think you can get better
d hot summer days the ac helps out when you have somewhere important to be all dressed up
if he’s asking 25 for his I would assume your 94 would be worth 4 if you want a lifted truck I would say put a lift kit on yours and run 35s

If the drivetrain is solid, I'd go for it. You can make it exactly how you want it later. With the extra money you get from the trade you can find lower geared diffs or sell the 38's and downsize if you want.

With 308s it is making the trans work hard just to take off but once she gets up to speed she will only be pushing 1800 going 70 lol. But if you replace the rears then add that into the money maybe a transmission let alone since it has of that it probably won use. I would wait till a 3/4 ton comes up and then lift it buy new tires. Granted 2k seams a good deal but you will be putting some of that money right back into it

thanks for all the advice guys..i havent really got to talk to the guy about it yet but im hoping to get about 200 maybe 1500 with the tarde..i have a solid bed at the house and just because im cheap and want the truck for driving and playing id fill the cab corners and rockers up with foam and bondo over make it look good and give it a nice rattle can paint job..i say it wouldnt look to bad..then with the left over money buy me some cheap gas saver lol
