Want to hook up a Tach.... need help

Ok I just bought myself a tach for my 85 , 305 4x4. I am not 100% sure on how to do this. My buddy told me just to hook it up to the neg. side of my coil. I think this is under my cap....correct? Also which side is the neg side, or is it clearly marked. i know where the rest of the wires go just a little unsure about this one.

you should have HEI distributor.  If so, I think it is labelled on the distributor cap itself where the green (usually ) wire goes.

If your looking at the distributor it will be on the right front side where the wires go should be a empty spot the cap should also say "tach" on the top side, its labeled. Also a tach should have three different setups for 4,6 or 8 cylinders sometimes you have to cut one to get it to fit a 6 or something else read the directions. If it came with some
