power steering pump swap?
« on: December 28, 2010, 10:46:03 am »
iam swapping over a new zz4 crate motor into my 1984 k20 and the original power steering pump is the hyrdo assit style to operate the power brakes too but the new motor came with standard pump made for vacum power brakes but the new motor is a serpintine belt while the original is a v belt, would i be able to swap pullys between the two or can i get a pump off of a newer style 3/4 or 1 ton truck to work? any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated thanks

77, I don't condone hijacking a thread, but, this may help get your pump pulley off...pump pulley pullers (say that 10x fast) are cheap at Northern Tools or Harbor Freight.

thanks bob, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so, I usally take pics whenever I am doing something to the ole trucks.  I let the pics do the talking--I hope it helps out others.

Now, to answer Sphynx or Sphnyx, I'd try to put a serpentine belt on it and use what you can from that newer set up.  I am not sure 'bout your brakes, but, I'd try to set it up where you use as much as possible that works for the serpentine.  Now remember, some things on a serp setup may require a reverse rotation (like water pump) for the serp to wrap around everything and still work.  I'd dump the v-belt stuff and replace with serpentine stuff if at all possible.

Agree with sarge. Just find a vacuum assist booster and you'll be ok

no problem about the hi jack

sarge, i have to run a serp system because all of my other accesorys are made for a serp system so i just need to know if i can swap pullys between the new and old pump or will a pump off of a newer 1 ton truck with a serp system work with my older brake system?

You could pull the pulleys off and see if they will fit.
