another starter bad!?
« on: January 22, 2011, 09:57:04 am »
Alright I seems that thins I've had this truck together its been a ongoing battle with starter motors because of the busted outer mounting hole on the block. Well my most recent starter that's on the truck is a delco 96+ vortec starter that a shop put on and it worked great for a couple of weeks then started acting up. Well I then put a new flexplate on over xmas since it needed it anyway and ever since it would sound lke the starter would spin but not engage but after a few tires it would finaly grab and crank it over. Well today I went to start it to go to the dump and it wouldn't engage at all so I made my wife come out and crank the truck while I watched and the bendix comes out and meshes perfectly but will not spin the motor over! I was pissed and that shop is closed today. What do you guys suggest? I'm getting a parts car for my trans am this weekend and will need to move the truck since its sitting where I'm going to tear down the parts car.

I would take the starter out and bench test the motor. I would ground the motor body and hook a jumper wire (I use jumper cables) to the starter motor itself (the small copper bar coming out of the non-drive end of the motort housing). If it spins good I would install a new starter solenoid. If it doesn't spin or sounds slow and weak, replace it. If you have any old starters laying around I'd steal a solinoid off of them to get by until you fix the block. You also may be able to take it to most major parts stores to have it tested as well.

I would also make sure your both your positive and negative wires have clean connections at both ends and that the wire and connectors are all in good condition.
