Brake light problem on 85 silverado
« on: February 06, 2011, 03:36:01 pm »
Alright, I figured the problem was the same as my 75 where it was something in the wire going to the right brake light from the column, but blinker works, just no signal for brake.  But what has me puzzled is there are 2 brake switches on the petal, it's a Canadian model truck so I don't know if there is something different.  I've tested gray switch but haven't checked white one yet so I have no idea if it works yet.  But just wondering if it is normal to have two brake switches on the my 85?

Alright I figured out that the second brake light switch is for a trailer brake being as the truck was set up for one, now just realized that the brake lights don't work when truck is in drive from time to time so i believe it's in the column and mostlikely the turnsignal switch it's self or something else so I plan to get the turn signal switch tomorrow and install to see if that fixes the brake light problem.

That other switch could also be to disengage cruise control when you press the brake. They look similar.
How are the wires at the flat connector at the base of the column? They like to break there. It was a poor design IMO. Another 4" of slack in the harness could have saved lots of headaches on these trucks.

Alright, have power when brake petal is down on both sides of the plug from the column going into and coming out of the turnsignal switch.  Nothing at the block, not sure if it's a bad wire at the block or bad connection some where but the turnsignal will show all the way to the taillight, the bulbs are brand new as well.

Fix someone had change the bulb part out and had it hidden behind the light, placed a bulb and everything worked, now I'm just curious to why it was replaced.
