possible carb rebuild time!
« on: March 03, 2011, 04:22:07 pm »
Well I've been meaning to rebuild the edelbrock 1406 carb on my truck for some time but haven't had a chance yest with us moving back In october and me working hardcore on my lsx swap in to my fbody but I believ I will now have to bite the bullet and sit down and do it. I finaly wired up my new fan relay last weekend amd drove the truck around about 100 +/- miles last weeked and ran pretty good and it sat all week till today when I took it to haul the trash to the dump. It started and I let it high idle for 5mins or so while I put up my tools from working on striping my parts car and when I kicked it off idt idled down and I walked to the back yard to get the dog to ride along with me and on the way back to the truck I noticed it loping harder than normal and when I got in with the truck at operating temp 200deg it was only idling at 550 or 500rpm in park and had a fair amount of grey black smoke puffing from the exhaust. I have my idle set at 700-750 in park/neutral and idles around 650 maybe 600 in gear with my cam and stall. I drove on and it ran fine but when I stoped across town to get my mothers trash also it starting loping hard and smoking like a train and idled down bellow 500. I opened it up one time on the way home and wound out 2nd gear and it pulled fine but puffed a huge cloud when I laid into it to where the car behind me merged into the other lane lol. I've had the carb apart once before to change the jets when I had it on my old fbody that had a 305 with the same cam I'm running in this 350 I'm running in this truck. I pulled about 14 on the vacume gauge with that car and I had springs in it for that and I pull around 16 or so in this truck. I've got a ajustable fpr on it and have it set to 4.5lbs but I didn't think to check it to see what it was doing. Ill do some more checking and possibly try to get a video of it tomorrow for you guys but until then if yall have any tips for rebuilding this carb or things I could try that would be great! I need to do some more tuning anyway my dizzy has lightweight springs in it and I have my inital timing set at around 18deg inital right now.
