Body side molding
« on: March 31, 2011, 01:35:07 am »
Hi, all, new to the site, and new to this era of Chevy trucks...I recently purchased a '76 Cheyenne Custom Camper, two-tone...My question is, were the body side moldings screwed into place?...I remember my old '72 had clips holding the moulding in place, but my '76 has screws...Truck is awfully clean, just wondering if the old-timer I got it from screwed the moulding in himself for reinforcement or if the factory did that...Thanks...

Also, where did the Cheyenne fit in the pecking order in 1976?...I think by then, Chevy introduced the Scottsdale and the Silverado...Mine has tilt, a/c, carpet, full headliner, wood trim on the dash and doors, auto, 454...Was the Cheyenne still considered top of the line in 1976?...

Some of the trim have screws on them to retain it.

Trim has visible screws at the back edge of the fender, front edge of the door, and on the bedsides right by the tailgate gap.

Thanks...Ok, I have six perfectly spaced screws on the upper bedside trim, three on each door and a few more on the bottom trim...The trim is in almost perfect shape, other than where it looks like the black inside got waxed off right around each screw, telling me it's been on there awhile...The old owner kept note of everything, even when he had the gold part of the hood and front fenders "refinished"...With a wide camper sitting on it for most of it's days, and none of the doors or bedsides ever being repainted, I could see how the trim stayed free of the "door ding gnomes"...But you never quite know what previous owners did and why they did it...

Thanks for the welcome...I'm new to this era of Chevy trucks, so bear with my over anal-ysis...I did a little digging and there was an old thread where a member bought a '77 Chev truck off a guy, who told him to "be careful with the trim, it was a one year only deal"...Turns out, according to another parts site, '77 had yellow or goldish coloring on the inside of the trim, then '78 and a couple years after, they went back to black...I think on that thread Chevyrado had just gotten new trim for his '78...

On mine, the trim, body and paint are almost perfect...The screws almost look like they were factory "torqued"---leaving no distorting or bending of the aluminum...So, I wondered if that may have been how the factory put the trim on from '73, on up w/ the new body style and the thinner trim molding, until they figured out a better system of clipping them in place...

I took some Scotch-Brite pads to the painted portion of my trim a long time ago. Has anyone else here done that?
